- josepablos, on 12/19/2008, -1/+81Dear Santa...
- carlonchox911, on 12/19/2008, -1/+73I can't imagine the cost..
- BellaDigger, on 12/18/2008, -1/+52I am sure it will be outdated in like three months. Still cool.
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -0/+50Want now
- designradical, on 12/19/2008, -2/+48And it will only cost a kidney. Luckily I have 2.
- m3mn0n, on 12/19/2008, -0/+36Left leg.
Mail-in rebate of 3 toes. - inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+36Read speed of 240MB/sec and Write speed of 200MB/sec.
It's not only the capacity that's improving, If I'm not mistaken the first SSDs had low write speeds (40 or 60MB/sec I think), even the promising Intel SSDs only have 70MB/sec write speed (250 read).
Compare it to the 10.000rpm WD Velociraptor (also in 2.5 form factor, although targeted at desktops) which has 120MB/s read and 100MB/s write. Toshiba has doubled it.
But it's still way too early until SSDs are affordable. - audiogeek5, on 12/19/2008, -0/+27Okay....for Christmas this year, you can either have A) A Lamborghini, or B) A 512gb SSD.
WHAT DO YOU DO? - dzw120, on 12/19/2008, -0/+23Surpassed, yes; Outdated, no.
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+20Great to see it doesn't end. My biggest hard drive at home is still only 500GB
- groo68, on 12/19/2008, -0/+19They're advancing faster than rotisserie style hard drives.
- Zippo, on 12/19/2008, -1/+19I remember buying my first flash drive back in 2004. I bought a 128MB stick for $70.
Now I see 1GB flash drives in the Wart-Mart check-out aisle for $10. Heck, last spring I picked up a tiny 4GB drive in Japan for about $30.
In a couple years, these things will be dirt-cheap. - Phasmorphage, on 12/19/2008, -0/+17Also rumored to cost around $9001...
- sadisticmind, on 12/19/2008, -1/+17A) the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 is pushing $322,000, you can sell that and buy 200 SSD
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+16Because in a month or two it still won't be available.
FTA: "(..) which could make their way to laptops and other devices by mid-2009."
So I must resort to ninja-ing my way into the Toshiba factory. - jer21, on 12/19/2008, -0/+15mmm...rotisserie
- EricL89, on 12/19/2008, -0/+14Just wondering, since now that there are SSDs with such high capacity does that mean that the 3.5in form factor will be phased out?
- robohoe, on 12/19/2008, -0/+13Either way, I still can't afford one :(
- Invid, on 12/19/2008, -0/+11A Gallardo IS porn.
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+10well why cant they?
- duewydo, on 12/19/2008, -1/+10It is staggering how quick this technology has matured and taken a foot hold. At this development rate I can see this being a very affordable and popular alternative to hard drives in a relatively short time. I cannot wait!
- MikeWanDo, on 12/19/2008, -0/+8I see what you did there.
- kent1146, on 12/19/2008, -1/+9There is still a market for mechanical hard drives... namely, massive storage at inexpensive prices. A 1.5TB hard drive costs ... around $130? Can't get anywhere close to that capacity, or price (at any size) on a SSD.
If anything, this new drive targets the WD Raptors... the products that try to strike a balance in speed, capacity, and price once you get above 7200rpm drive performance. - dandonia, on 12/19/2008, -0/+7Fantastic, hopefully the price will start to crash on them soon.
- Ziggy7273, on 12/19/2008, -0/+7brb, rotisserie
- Commodus, on 12/19/2008, -1/+8B, because A doesn't include free lifetime maintenance; I'd bleed cash just trying to keep the Lambo on the road!
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+7How much $ per SSD GB?
- tgc1, on 12/19/2008, -1/+7Well seeing as since 128GB SSD's are going for about 300 right now, i'd expect the 256GB version to go for about 700 or so and 512GB versions about 1200-1400 or so.
- Evilblobs, on 12/19/2008, -0/+6500GB HD - 50$
500GB SSD - 5,000$ - livefromheaven, on 12/20/2008, -0/+6Oh lord, here it comes...
- raydeen, on 12/19/2008, -0/+6First born.
- cuoops, on 12/19/2008, -0/+6Toshiba press release - http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_12/pr180 ...
- FAHQ2, on 12/19/2008, -2/+8I recently purchased a 32GB SSD for around $100.
So i would guess that on release day this 512GB SSD drive will cost around ~ $1,600.
Really expensive considering a 500GB HD costs ~$70.
Still it is nice to see the progress in SSD tech, and i look forward to eventual price drops, as i would love to have two 512GB SSD's in RAID 0. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 12/20/2008, -0/+5That's the joke...
- allancorbett, on 12/20/2008, -0/+5You wouldn't need porn... You'd have women draped over you.
- SteeleJK, on 12/19/2008, -0/+5I think it’s because SSD drives are comprised of many chips whereas flash drives only have one.
- Nick5309, on 12/20/2008, -0/+5i tried to resist....really, i did...but the /b/tardation has spread at an alarming rate throughout my body, and has reached my cerebral cortex...
IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - pHr34kY, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4250MB/sec? How much faster is that compared to what came with my Aspire one?
$ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 82 MB in 3.01 seconds = 27.20 MB/sec
Well, I guess that answers it. - FreddieD, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4An arm and a leg. But such is the cost for early adoption. What's awesome is that the bar keeps getting raised, so everything else gets lowered. I was considering upgrading some hard drives in my RAID in the basement but given how SSD's are progressing, I think prices are going to drop faster than expected on mechanical drives.
- KooperG, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4here is some lsd instead; much cheaper!
- ButterLoyalist, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4A
- EvoIII8, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3I have been a good boy this year....so please....SSD?
- vsujohn2, on 12/19/2008, -1/+4How about you wait at least a month or two for the price to be cut by half?
- plixer, on 12/19/2008, -2/+5Considering they're going to release in "mid-2009" I wouldn't count on it.
- ButterLoyalist, on 12/19/2008, -2/+5I can
- JohnsonGotOwned, on 12/20/2008, -0/+3Most diggers can't have the sex to acquire a first born. Even if they do, they won't want it.
- musntSurfatWork, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3there is no disturbance whatsoever, these are Solid State mechanical-less flash drives. You have something else that disturbes you, as a pebble disrupts a pond.
- MacEnvy, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3NewEgg has them for $79, even for a fast one (150 MB/sec):
