- Wolfsblood2012, on 08/28/2008, -1/+40I've seen a lot of these lists and never can understand why they never include the P-38 Lightning. The P-38 was credited with the most kills in the Pacific Theatre with more than 1,800 confirmed, was responsible for more ground attack missions than any other fighter in both the Pacific and the European Theatres and generated the highest rated ace of all time with 42 confirmed kills. Granted, it loses in the beauty contest, but that figher far surpassed many on this list and on others.
Just my two cents. - satanikus, on 08/28/2008, -0/+29Great plane, but not a fighter.
- SushiCW, on 08/27/2008, -2/+30Not all of these are jets... but otherwise a pretty respectable roundup.
- ksgant, on 08/28/2008, -12/+32I would have put the A-10 Warthog on the list somewhere.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 08/28/2008, -5/+23No Mig-29? that jet is badass.
- Aeroboy, on 08/28/2008, -0/+16The A-10 is by no means a Fighter
- Aeroboy, on 08/28/2008, -0/+14Once again, the A-10 is not a fighter.
- Abomonog, on 08/28/2008, -1/+14The big problem with the list is that 10 just doesn't cut it when it comes to great fighters.
The Spad-6, P-38, Japanese Zero, Mig-29, Typhoon, and Corsair are all missing. There are probably a few others that I missed also. - jayjun, on 08/28/2008, -4/+16Definaltely not rubbish. Voted on by individuals that know a lot more about fighter aircraft than anyone here. A tad too influenced by Brits and Yanks, but as it was their program, it is quite understandable. Not to mention, any ranking that can only include 10 will undoubtedly exclude some.
I agree for the most part. No plane influenced the outcome of a war, or saved more lives, than the Mustang. Although it was horrendous at taking damage. The F-15 does so well because of its dominant service record. Even though it is showing its age. I still argue that the Yanks didn't really need the F-22 Raptor. The Spitfire is a beautiful aircraft, but like someone said, the Hurricane is arguably a better plane for various reasons. My biggest problem is with the selection of the F-4 Phantom. A very limited plane. Very fast, but not versitaile in the least. It also came with unreliable missle technology. It's being given too much credit for ushering out the age of the dogfight. - Jikul, on 08/28/2008, -1/+11No F-16, no MIG-29... and so many others. This is a stupid list.
- KragTheDigger, on 08/28/2008, -6/+14Finally, a list that puts the F-15 where it rightfully belongs, without over-hyping the F-14 !
- balaknair, on 08/28/2008, -0/+8I agree.
The Lightning was rather more durable than the Mustang, and able to take a lot more punishment but still get it's pilot home safely. P-38s also shot down the aircraft carrying Adm. Yamamoto, the IJN's greatest strategist. - Eezyville, on 08/28/2008, -0/+8The digg title is misleading.
- Lazn0r, on 08/28/2008, -4/+11needs moar Luftwaffe
- macca77, on 08/28/2008, -7/+14And what about the Eurofighter Typhoon?
- stupidStan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Hasn't even seen combat yet...
- widgetmaker, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7Not sure why the F15 is so high up the list, as a solid all-rounder the F16 is surely at least and equal. It also misses off the F14 which have a fairly distinguished combat record.
- ksgant, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Yep, you're right. Now I know why it was left off.
- crazydiode, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7and no Su-30MKI .. incomplete list IMO.
- oli35, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5I think the Harrier has a rightful place in this list. It's still the only VTOL jet fighter in military service and it has been extremely successful as a navy aircraft thanks to its VTOL/STOL capability.
Having said that I understand the F-35 prototypes have been successful in VTOL testing. I don't know much about the F-35 so I have no idea when it will be in service, so if anyone who knows more could post what they do know that would be cool, not just for me but for anyone else who's interested. - stupidStan, on 08/28/2008, -4/+9Su-34 deserves a spot don't you think?
- stupidStan, on 08/28/2008, -4/+9I would expect to see the F-18 Super Hornet and the F-16 Falcon on there before the 14.
- punkcat, on 08/28/2008, -4/+9love the Mustang design, bit surprised the F14 didn't make the list though.
- widgetmaker, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5The Hurriane arguably had more of an impact as that's the plane that shot down the bombers whilst the spitfires went for the fighter escorts. People always point at the Spitfire yet the combination of the two is what prooved to be so deadly.
- virtblue, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5The Me-109 has to of been the best fighter of all time, it it was a class above the p-51 and could even out maneuver the spitfire.
It probably has the highest kill count of all fighters ever. I mean just these 4 dudes[Erich Hartmann(352 kills), Gerhard Barkhorn(301 kills), Gunther Rall(275 kills), Otto Kittel(267 kills)] have a kill count of just under 1200 planes. Thats most probaly higher than the cumulative kill count of all jet fighters, i mean the f-15 only has a 104 kills.
There were 35,000 or so of them made and they had to battle 30k+ spitfires, 15k+ p-51's, 12k+ hurricanes and a shed load or other fighters. They did lose the war and they were evil but still it was a damn good plane, fighters seam to be about the only thing the Nazi's did right.
But naywho the sexyest plane is line up def has to be the spitfire.
http://aceswarriorsandwingmen.com/db2/00132/aceswa ... - elementop, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5@themoors: you are exactly right, sir (or madame). Pacifism is *always* the answer. After all, pacifism is what finally stopped Adolf back in the '40s, right?
Oh, wait... - Shogi, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't say this list is bad, but I think ten spots are too few to list the best fighters.
- NTolerance, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4You can't over-hype the Tomcat. Just look at the the thing.
- anyone4apint, on 08/28/2008, -6/+10I agree. The Typhoon is the single most advanced multi-role fighter on the planet. Whilst the US take the approch of making an aircraft suited to a specific job, the multi-task nature of the Eurofighter makes it the best all rounder out there by a long shot. Plus it looks amazingly bad ass.
- Aeroboy, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5I wonder though... Spitfire, but no Hurricane? Yes the Spitfire is more iconic but the Hurricane was the one with the kills, and the numbers.
- Protuhj, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5F-117 Stealth 'Fighter'
- sharkd, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Except that show featured the Vought F4U Corsair, which was in Navy and Marine Corps service, mostly in the Pacific, whereas the Mustang was limited to USAAF service, mostly in Europe.
- Eezyville, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5They're not all supposed to be jets, the digg title is misleading, the actual article says Top Ten Fighters. The A-10 is not a fighter is was a close air support vehicle. The SR-71 was a spy plane, not a fighter.
- dsmx, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5At the rate it's development is going it never will.
- Mohonri, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4They are "Fighter Planes," and therefore their purpose is to shoot down enemy military jets. The "kill people who are almost certainly innocent" comment is way off-base. Killing innocent people in a military situation is the last thing anyone wants to do. It generates sympathy for the enemy and diverts your materiel and attention from your real objective--destroying the enemy's military power.
- stubear, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Surprise, the submitter has reading comprehension problems and wrote a misleading title (what's really ironic is that many social news sites complain about the accuracy of the established media). The ACTUAL article is titled "Top Ten Fighters".
- iamdan1, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4The F-4 was the best plane of it's time. It was limited by its armament, and really should have had some guns on it, but it took out plenty of MiGs to earn its spot on the list.
- Mithivh, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Hence the "not all"
- baltar2008, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4In the 'best looking' list I'd put the JAS 39 Gripen at the top.
- ksgant, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Yes, now I see that it's a list about fighters and the A-10 isn't a fighter. Also see that the list isn't all "jet" fighters either, despite what the title says here on Digg
- Eezyville, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4Who said anything about wanking? Something you want to tell us?
- bentman78, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3You're right...it's not.
- widgetmaker, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3A designation means it's not a fighter. However a top 10 of attack air craft it would likely win.
- oli35, on 08/28/2008, -2/+5Totally disagree
- ukblacknight, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3The Hurricane should be there (#6), not the spitfire. It achieved higher kills during WWII than the Spitfire!
- heystoopid, on 08/28/2008, -2/+5Some really crappy choices as the Hurricane served in all theaters of the war from the Arctic Circle to the jungles in the far east from literally day one to the last day unlike the spitfire listed . Also the notable and superior Russian designed Sukhoi SU27 the real star of the Asian War Games(using AWAC's like it's opponents for three years in a row wiped the floor of the best of the best flying the entire current arsenal of available US Air Force Fighter Jets in current service trained at the Tom Cruise school of acting like a Top Gun in Nevada ) is missing and the venerable old ultra fast interceptor the Mig25 which could both out fly and out climb the F15C with a far superior fully armed service ceiling as well as was shown back in the early nineties ! Fancy the old flying Brick Truck , the Phantom 2 getting a mention replete with the flying characteristics of a sick brick on one engine !
Not a good choice at all , I would say a tad biased big time ! - Saabzilla, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3No love for the F-14. If for no other reason it should be on the list in honor of Goose!
- Boing, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4The F-15 is high on the list because it has an unbeaten record in air to air combat. It has never been shot down by any enemy aircraft... ever. You can't beat that.
And again, the A-10 is not a fighter. - spillingvoid, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Where's the P-47 Thunderbolt. The most heavily produced fighter of WWII. Had 8 fifty's and the same engine as the B-29.
- elementop, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3The P-38 loses the beauty contest?!?! You need to get your eyes checked :) I've always thought the P-38 was a beautiful airplane.
