- bepo, on 10/11/2007, -17/+135Just my opinion but I believe these inexpensive systems are one reason Windows Vista demands such enormous system resources. If the hardware costs under $100 people will really start to question the value of a $300 operating system.
- crackah, on 10/11/2007, -5/+92I suppose, but you can have my 486 which is under the house for a dollar.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+66snes is pretty sweet though
- *jooloop*, on 10/11/2007, -2/+64Wow that was an aweful webpage. Imagine Digg with 5 sec. entire page auto refresh. Ikes
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46You probably could find a computer sitting on a curb with these specs.
- lcmatt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40Norhtec's MicroClient JrSX:
"and it has no sound capabilities"
So whats the headphone slot for then? - lava, on 10/11/2007, -3/+38Yeah, I hate these forbes slideshows. Why won't they let me decide when to move to the next page by default. There isn't even a warning. They should at least slow it down so I can finish the damn thing.
- Seifey, on 10/11/2007, -5/+38http://images.forbes.com/media/slideshows/images/stpB.gif
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32Yeah, they are so woefully underpowered you couldn't do much with them except thin client and personal file servers.
However, I'm tempted to get:
http://norhtec.com/products/mcjr/index.html
The $85 one... Its so underpowered, but would make a nice file silent server since it runs off flash memory cards instead of a hard drive. - Cmain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28But then I'd have to leave my house. NOES!!!
- foolfromhell, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23The DecTOP sucks
My friend's got one for free from his workplace.
You cant install any other programs to the OS. Only use the ones that come with it... - TheWorm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I say boycott Forbes.com. They have the lousiest interface, and on a list of 10 things, instead of listing out the ten items, they make you click 10 times through a slideshow so they can get 10x the ads.
- dunezone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17The 85$ is only useful if you browse web pages and look up email and THATS IT literally. And its a no brainer that they can sell the damn thing for 85$ when it has components comparable to ten years ago. Thats like selling a SNES as a cheap gaming system today.
- orbit1979, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14you can have a real laptop with better specs for that kind of money."
For $85? Point the way please so I can buy like 5 of those "real" laptops.....for $85! - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15bepo: "Just my opinion but I believe these inexpensive systems are one reason Windows Vista demands such enormous system resources. Except there's no reason to pay $300 for Windows. If you buy a computer with Vista pre-loaded you're probably paying about $50 for the OS. If you're building your own you can buy the system builders editions of Vista Home Basic (the only edition you should consider installing on such a cheap computer) for $90 or Vista Premium for $112 from NewEgg. - Archarios, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13You can get a much better computer on Freecycle for a lot cheaper... free even. You could also get a better computer from a local freegeek. The Chicago freegeek will give you a "feekbox" for 50 bucks.
- browwiw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13If only they could get laptops into a similar price range.
- proghead, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17???
- CodeCobalt, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17bepo,
SAY WHAT!? Alright maybe thats slightly true, but try running ANY modern OS on any of those (except the last 2 for $300 which you could build better for less) and then do word processing and open up an e-mail. Your going to be SLUGGISH, if not FROZEN.
But yeah I'm sure MS does want us to spend more on our PC's than the software that runs it.. But then again I'm sure there not that worried about it as most people don't even know theres anything other than windows out there. Hell most people think Microsoft and windows IS personal computing. So I don't think your average consumer would really think twice about the price of the OS and the price of a PC. - Jo9100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9just buy a P3 off craigslist and youre done for about $50
- hakr89, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8something like this could be a hell of a lot more capable if it were running linux
- chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Cant run much on them though
the 2.2Ghz with 256MB ram for $219 sounds like a good deal, imo
maybe another 256MB of ram would be good
put XP on it, plays movies, music, does most of the things a family computer needs to do, office computer even
Gaming, graphics/video editing, some sort of very resource hungry programming, it probably wont do
It is possible to find similarly spec'ed systems off the streets
i picked up a P4 2GHz and an AMD Athlon 2000+ in working cond, but with no RAM, HDD, CD etc just with case, mobo, psu and CPU of course
keyboards and mice can also be found in such a manner - TRENT310, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I bought a few refurbished Dell Optiplex GX150 SFFs from Office Depot for $82.99 CAD. It's a bit nicer than the MicroClient, and comes with 256 MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 1.2GHz processor. I don't really need the CF reader hard drive replacement, or the extreme SFFness.
I guess would make a nice firewall/router machine, but I need more than 2 interfaces on mine, because I split everything into seperate networks. (servers from wired workstations from internal wifi and from public wifi)
But okay, I guess not everyone got that deal, so these could be attractive for some people.
I think I'm just being an idiot. - ninja0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I got an old comp from school. teacher was gonna throw it out otherwise. i jsut booted her up today, yup shes got 40MB of ram, this thing puts my new old computer to shame :(
- BOFH2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7you just know some VP from a company is looking at this thinking; " just think how much we could save on costs and then what my bonus for figuring this out will be!!!" Then when half their workforce quits because the can't get their jobs done because these things suck he/she will probably get a bonus for cutting costs again and become CEO.
- inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Really? Can you show me some "real laptops with better specs" on Ebay that have sold for that price? I'm not finding them.
Oh, and make sure you add in the shipping and insurance costs, although I guess we'll slide on the additional cost of your time spent watching and bidding. I think to nail such a deal, you're going to spend a lot of time on Ebay trying to get very lucky. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Set the speed to the lowest and then just click the next arrow when you want to go to the next page.
- psykiv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If I can get it with 2 ethernet ports and wifi, that would make one hell of a wireless router.
- TheExtendedName, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6skip the ads
http://www.norhtec.com - HalFTW, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"the Zonbox, is about the size of a Bible"
Only in America. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6For god sakes, at least give them 256 RAM, 128 is just saying "You aren't THAT worthy, LoL."
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14@bepo voted down as nonsense FUD.
Windows is expensive because old-technology isnt expensive? What are you talking about? - ninja0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5that would be nice, except if they did that, then the specs would have to be something along these lines:
64MB ram
512MB flash memory for a HD
6 inch LCD screen
1 usb port
no sound
black and white video
lol. oh and lets not forget the 20watt PSU - Rhatz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I did find a computer like these on a curb and it is as tough as nails. You could drop it to the bottom of the ocean and it would still work.
- TheSleeplessOne, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Have you guys ever tried to USE Windows CE on the Internet? We have thin clients at work, basically the same bare-bones connection as the computers they are discussing in this article - (except our IT people spent about $350 apiece for ours... duh).
Win CE has Internet Explorer, but it's horrible. (Yes, horrible even by IE standards!) Simple images take forever to load, and large chunks of the web page display as large white blocks. Flash doesn't even run on it.
A cheap, bare-bones Internet connection is a great idea, but hopefully they will make sure it runs all the web-page basics. I bet Mozilla could do a good job as a minimum web browser... - orbit1979, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4A system such as this would be very ideal for those who only need/want a computer for the internet and simple word-processing. I bought my mother a 8 year old computer off ebay for $25 and put Win98 on it 6 years ago and it still serves her internet surfing needs. For those type of people, they don't $600 system. This could make a great alternative.
- linuxrebel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Just a minor point but it's only the cheapest computer available because they are sold out and don't plan on making more. The replacement model appears to be $120
- Tourney3p0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How are you allowed to exist?
- darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3OLPC?
- HHP2K, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Notice how they say the Norhtec MicroClient JrSX has no sound capabilities, but yet has a mic and sound jack right there in the picture?
- jsleno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So...you would buy them if they cost 10 times MORE than they do? Price has nothing to do with quality.
Keep in mind, $85 to you may not be much. But $85 to someone making $2000 per year is a fortune. Besides, some PCs used to cost $8500. Would you still pay that price for a desktop PC today? - dr-steve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm very curious about this box. Kinda small, kinda modular.
Thin client is right... So much of Linux-land has focused on Linux as a desktop (X client + X server) or as a server (headless services). Run X server on one of these and configure the "big home box" as the generalized host of X client apps?
-Steve - t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Its all lies I have a 400mhz box with 20gb of hdd and more then 128mb of ram I would sell for $25.
- leoedin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"We believe we'll see a real explosion when computers get down to below $80," he says.
hehe - a whole $5 less! - OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The MicroClient is interesting. but WiFi + 2 serial ports costs $200 plus $44 shiping to the US. If you want no wifi and no serial ports but a harddrive it's only $120 plus $44 shipping. the $85 price is if you order 1000 of them.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2
You cant install any other programs to the OS.
I don't think that's what they were designed for. Seems more like something to be used as a terminal/"thin client" over gigabit ethernet. This is what you'd be running your Google Office on (or so Google hopes!), or virtualized apps, etc. Perfect for schools and offices because they'd have full control over what you can do. No more sneaking porn, or installing crap on your company's hardware. - Hydrophoenix420, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3These computers are the start of a new trend I believe. You can already build a decent computer for about 500$ so I guess it won't be long for us to see what used to be "decent" computers at these prices.
My mother wants a computer but she can't really afford one and these computers are good enough to surf, chat and maybe a little extra. Believe it or not, some people have never or rarely touched a computer and those would make them very happy. I'd have to install Ubuntu for her tho, man would it feel weird if my mother was to try linux before I do.. - Tawni, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3you get what you pay for... These cheap PCs scare me. Especially when I see Emachines selling a vista machine for $450.00 or less at costco. Try to actually run Vista on the hardware you get with that price.
- Rosstafari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Don't expect to play 'Grand Theft Auto III'"...
Uh, how out of touch is this guy? Hint: You don't sound culturally savvy when you're pulling up five year old game titles. - darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ach your basen are belonking to oos!
