- TGMD, on 10/10/2007, -5/+141I'm getting sick of this...
First Motorola rewrote the rules
Then apple rewrote the rules
Now Google is rewriting the rules
How about this: No more god damn rules - SlappyJ, on 10/10/2007, -3/+80What was Apple's design first? Apple made the first cell phone? No. Apple made the first large screen cell phone? No. Apple made the first touch screen cell phone? No. Also: No one actually knows what the GPhone looks like ... or if it actually exists.
I understand your points about Google -- they're definitely not the "Do No Evil" company anymore -- but trusting Apple any more than Google is just naive. They both answer to one master: Wallstreet. - Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+74Obvious things that would contribute toward success:
1) Dont tie it to a specific cell network (They're all total rubbish, but people should be able to pick their flavor of rubbish)
2) Open development platform (should be easy to whip up various console emulators)
3) A published parody by Maddox (nuff said)
I'd need AT LEAST 2 out of 3 of those to contemplate trading from my Nokia e70 - HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -11/+57Just what I always NEVER wanted, a cell phone with built in advertising.
- rajulkabir, on 10/10/2007, -5/+46Could this article be any lamer?
"Google should X"
"Google should Y"
"Google should Z"
where X, Y, and Z are boring, obvious, incremental things that everyone in the market has done or is going to do anyway. Oooh, GPS! Ooh, a camera with more than 2 megapixels. Who would have ever thought of it? Oh wait, all the manufacturers who are already making phones with GPS or high-res cameras.
Oh, and then toss in some sketches of the iPhone with the Apple logo removed and call it "concept art".
Buried for being a waste of my time. - ph3rny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28And with this google wireless you will be able to connect to special Google Gspots.
- revjustin2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27an excellent piece of speculative fiction
- Tenlow, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29Remember if you trust apple, you are also trusting AT&T. That seems like a good idea /sarcasm
- rauz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Wow, this round up had more speculation than I can take right now.
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+201) It will be tied to google wireless.
2) Linux. - bstew22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21we don't need no education...
- Koldkompress, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I wish I could connect to any gspot.. it's never within range. =(
- Lochie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Yeah but we can always just download AdBlock.
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Honestly, I could live with ads on a phone as long as they are not obtrusive and it was relatively inexpensive.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15*****, I didnt know Zach Morris was on digg. Tell me though - does that thing actually make calls, or does it just dispense candy and play Mr T quotes when you push the buttons?
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15This phone hasn't even been announced yet (and may not even exist) and you're trying to figure out if you can get it in your country...
- Walgreenz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15And let the wild speculation and blog spam commence!
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -10/+22***** the GPhone and the iPhone.
Motorola DynaTAC 8000X FOR LIFE: http://www.motorola.com/mot/image/7/7475_MotImage.jpg - lieutenantmudd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Really? I thought it was a poor piece of speculative fiction. He dwells at length about the camera the cell phone might carry, which is probably the one feature where Google's expertise and ambitions are totally irrelevant.
- Lenny, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12No dark sarcasm in the classroom
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13We dont need no thought control ...
- SierraAlpha, on 10/10/2007, -9/+19... a "moran"? I believe you mean moron, sir.
- NasKa, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12If Google makes it and it is around $100. I will give it a try.
- sdaf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8If only the "Pwr" button would have said "Pwn" instead...
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Instead of scrolling through your address book, you simply write the first few letters and click I'm feeling lucky
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10EasyEve do you realize how many people will see your comment, and you will forever be remembered as the guy who said something so ridiculously stupid. I only memorize a few digg users names (one being pizzler because he has a cannibis plant icon and always submits useful stories) but yours will be remembered as a complete and utter moron. I suggest you make a new account and start from scratch.
- JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11$20 bucks is on Google not coming out with a cell phone but a glorified plugin for VoIP on Google Talk. :-P
- misterhat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7yes, look at some of the comments above
- thebenchase, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Whatever dumbass drew those concept pictures is retarded... they just copy & pasted and changed the black to white.
Now I think a google phone would be great, and I'd want one if it spanned all carriers, but no one wants another overpriced iPhone on the market. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Ads are obtrusive by nature.
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Some people really have no imagination.. before the iPhone came out, every mockup had it looking like every other phone, but in shiny white. Now that the iPhone is out, every other phone mockup looks like another version of the iPhone.
- alexdemers, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Teachers leave them kids alone
- darny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7"Google is also expected to bid on the spectrum, pledging upwards of $5 billion in an auction that may net the government between $10 billion and $12 billion."
Which it will spend on 15 minutes of warring with Iran. - rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How much of the cool-aid did it take to make you believe the iPhone design was original. I know I'll get digged down, but Apple rarely does *anything* original. They combine other good ideas, and popularize it.
- dafragsta, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11All in all you're just a- 'nother brick in the wall.
- holygram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7But... but... but....digg said...
- chingy1788, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7In comes Microsoft with the xPhone
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Easily upgradeable hardware in a phone? We've had laptops for nearly 20 years (well lug-ables) and the good ones STILL are barely upgradeable, and rarely is it easy. At the cost of a phone, and at the rate they artificially depreciate them (come on, you just know the current iPhone will be 200$ next year, and free the year after), its really not worth while.
- chembro84, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6That's funny but true. We all use Google, and if you use something else you are nuts. Thats the difference between the dot coms of the 90's and Google. Google is THE search engine. Many of Google's services are the most popular on the web (ad sense, youtube, google earth, etc) so I wouldn't worry about Google tanking any time soon.
- sydseale, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Give Google this: they've always found ways to make ads less obnoxious. If it were made by anyone else, I would worry I would have to sit through occasional full screen ads. With Google, I don't have to worry.
- JoeHeavyFlow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5This article should be named "How amazing the Gphone would be if I made it"
- noots, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4too true, google knows how to make adds unobtrusive, and somewhat usefull. Other companies will jump on the bandwagon and whore it all to total shame.
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually, I think it should have read, "Here's what it might looks like if Google were dolts and did nothing but copy the iPhone."
- TexanPsycho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you really trust Apple, you'd call the iPhone an iPhone and not an I-Phone.
- moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What I would like to see from a Google device, in the order of want.
1) Voip over WIFI/ 700mhz service. (This will be the money maker if they partner with Skype or Vonage.)
2) Open source Firmware and Apps. (Must Have, I wanna make it better on my demands, or have other people do it for me.)
3) The library of Google Apps on and offline that we have come to know and love. (Google Earth+GPS that can fit in your hand= WIN.)
4) Easily upgradeable hardware w/ a couple of USB Ports on the side. (At that point, it could BE your computer.) - misterhat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5he misspelled "you're" because he was quoting from the comment he replied to. that is why he put it in "quotation marks".
its pretty funny, you get these people who think they're so smart cause they know grammar/spelling that they teach in elementary school, yet can't pick up an obvious joke unless there is this huge /SARCASM/ tag at the end - cesclaveria, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4there is more than just one concept.
- spammishking, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4And this has to do with the speculative Gphone how?
- bstew22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Begin hundreds of entries for gphone "prototypes" and "possibilities" on digg.
ugh. /wrists. - Lathen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I understand the sentiment but I kind of disagree. As a regular user of the internet (read:I don't have a life) I've gotten pretty good at mentally filtering out ads so as long as they did not make obnoxious noises, take up the entire screen, or halt functionality for the span of the ad then I would hardly notice them.
