- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -8/+137I can buy me a wife with that money.
- blaineg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42I customized the XPS 600 with all the most expensive options and it came out to $46,774 or as low as $1,359/month! This included four LCD TVs, about 2TB hard drive space, 4GB ram and anything else Dell happens to offer with the XPS 600.
Hows that for an expensive PC? - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23The story is dated March 22, 2006- last time I checked that was today =P
- slatkin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Yes but he's an Apple fanatic so he's willing to pay $10,000
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22But will it run DirectX 10?
- Savetechtv, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21I dugg this story but I would like to say that Dell trying to do this isn't going to work. Mostly due to the fact of the price. They are trying to attract the wrong people. If your a computer enthusiast than you will know how to make an even better PC for half the price. Nowadays, with the correct searching, you can find a motherboard that supports like 2 or 3 different graphics cards. If your really lucky you can find motherboards that support everything they are offering for under 400$, I know, I have seen them. And now you can find that type of processing power at a fairly decent price, again with the propper searching, and then you can overclock it. And then you can go to an extreme of getting 4GB Memory for the price they are probably going to charge for that 2GB! So whats the better deal?
- JDOG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I reckon I'd want at least 8 gigs of RAM for 10k....that's just me though.
- GaleForce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Considering its only in limited production they probably won't have a problem selling all the machines they produce.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I'd take VooDoo, Alienware or Falcon Northwest High-ends PCs anyday over a Dell one.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15If you take Alienware, that's the same as taking Dell now...
- jknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Reminds me of GM. They made the Geo Metro (with a straight face) and the Corvette.
Mind you, if you buy this, you will never ever afford to move out of your parent's "cellar downloadin' pictures of Sarah Michelle Gellar" (thanks Weird Al)
I dunno. 10K for a non-server. I could NEVER explain that to the wife. Although I could open Excel really quickly and with that 30" screen, lots of cells visible at once. Now if I were an accountant......... - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12That so many here have said Dell won't sell any of these is a good example of why computer geeks don't work in marketing.
Yes, they'll sell them all. Can we computer geeks make a better rig for the money?
Yes.
Can I soup up a Corvette and easily outperform the best Porsche or Lambo for a fraction of the price?
Sure.
But...
People still buy Porsches and Lambos.
Dudes, when you got the kind of scratch to drop $10k for a gaming rig just for the fun of it, you don't give a crap that some geek thinks that it costs too much.
I'm joe richey-rich and I like to game. I can drop $10k on a night of partying, I see the Dell. COOL! I'm flippin' out the black Amex Card and away we go! - Kazanoe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14If you can get a wife for ten grand, what the hell would you get for that?
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"Hows that for an expensive PC?"
Great. Now I need a cold shower and a stiff drink. Thanks. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I actually have a PC that was originally purchased for 10k.
Dual P3 600s
SCSI U160 controller with two attached 14 gig drives, and two plextor optical drives
512 meg of ram
Purchased in late 1999. It was a rediculous price, even for '99. I got it for next to nothing a couple of years later, after the dotcom that bought it went out of business.
It's still a pretty decent machine. The SCSI controller in it *still* sells for $300 new (adaptec 19160?) and the drives are still faster than IDE. It plays WoW decently, after I stuck a geforce4 in it. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9the quad powermac with 8 gigs is more like $4000...
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/StoreReentry.wo?family=PowerMac - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It should have more ram for 10k. And I'd rather have two AMD processors in there. Other than that, man I would kill for that computer.
- robche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7$10,000 to buy, then a further $1000 a month on your electricity bill
- flashpointbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6it actually has dual 160Gb(10000 RPM) HDDs along with the 400Gb (7200 RPM)... but this machine is long past sold out unfortunately
- Cykaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How long before there is actually a game that can take advantage of all this? No gaming company is going to make a game for this type of system when only a very small percentage of people will have these kinds of specs. Is the difference between dual SLI and quad SLI visable in any current games? You can already get 60+ FPS in the highest mode in any game with a much cheaper system...
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7 THE PC for the Rich and Lazy kids!! Just build it yourself and save a little cash!
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If you're spending that much and not building it yourself, or at least selecting the parts yourself, you're going to be very rich or just plain dumb. This is Dell's replacement for AlienWare computers, they were never cheeper than building it yourself and they were never cheep either.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Most versions of windows don't support that much ram. Most 32 bit processor-based motherboards don't either.
- lexaken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+832 bit has a maxium of 4gb of ram, which is what most mobos support nowadays
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8yeah but will it play Nada 3?
- marix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6they are only making 30 and each has a custom tru-flame paintjob. I'd imagine they are already sold out.
- Fly1m1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7God that case looks bad. Would not put that anywhere near my home.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For that much, you could just go get the penis enlargement surgery outright.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5
LOL....In two years the owners will be selling them for $800 - matthiasgoodman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't think you know what you are talking about. Saying that "Right away, using a Pentium over an AMD means less performance" shows a leaning towards generalizations, which are never good arguments. Besides, I don't think Dell is claiming it is the best.
Also, for those of you asking for more RAM, wasn't there a report a few months ago that more than 2GB didn't help in gaming. - Scottyx38, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Amen to that
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The high price is in the 30" LCD monitor. :P
- BigG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I threw this together on NewEgg after reading this article:
https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=1970005&WishListTitle=Uber Gamer System
Link is too long to be read properly. Just copy the link. - ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It is easy to make a PC that costs stupid amounts of money. Just put in the most expensive components you can think of, multiply by four, add in water and stir.
Think we're impressed? No digg. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"At the core of the PC is a Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition processor that has been overclocked from 3.73 to 4.26 GHz."
..that is some extreme overclocking and it makes me a bit skeptical as to the stability of the machine.. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Buy this PC to prove you're either:
1. Rich and don't have anything to do with your $$$.
2. An insecure shmuck with abnormally small genitalia. - BenWhitey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WASTE OF MONEY!!!
BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER!!! IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER AND YOU WONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH DELL!!!!
You can get techsupport form Experts Exchange; join by saying you are an expert. THen you get 5 free points a day and dont need to pay $$$$. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9No, it will not run DirectX 10. The 7900GTX is a DX9 card. The 8xxx series, however, will be DX10 cards, so unless you're some rich mofo with a ***** of money to burn, this computer, well, won't be "the best" for all that long. You'll have the fastest machine for just a few months before the next-gen cards get released (late 2006? early 2007?).
- tomkroening, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5$10,000 on a PC and no RAID-5? I would at very least expect some sort of redundancy for that price.. hell even an tape drive.
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm laughing that people would think Dell is doing this for the money. That's why they are only making 30 of them - of which athletes, rappers, lotto-winners, actors etc. will buy one. I'd buy one if I was one of the aforementioned and so would you.
But Dell only did this to get the pub of having the baddest ass rig there is. Although it's pretty freakin' funny in light of their Alienware acquisition. In hindsight I'm sure they would have steered the inside (exclusive, mind you - RTFA) Nvidia track to Alienware. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is what we call "A Ripoff".
- AuLKenny, on 10/12/2007, -15/+18@ strictnein, 100 huh? so did you just pull that number out of your ass cause...
"Dell sources tell us that less than 30 will be manufactured, and they expect to sell out TODAY by noon."
http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MTc3NTQsLCxobmV3cywsLDE= - chicksdigme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And Moore law says something else twice as fast/better will be available in 18 months? How much would this be worth in 18 months? $9930 * 1/2? If I had $9930 to piss away, I will buy stocks, bonds, etc. If I am not dumb or crazy, my return wont be -50%. I wonder who will be stupid enough to buy this?
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5At LEAST 4GB... I have 2GB of ram in my aging rig.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, nice rig. but who or what games support hardware physics?
About the only game right now with that level of sophistacation is half life 2.
but I would not say no if I found one under the tree. - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If you spend $10k on a system and built it yourself it better give you a blowjob at startup.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Because they're trying to stop being associated with " cheap crap computers that lasts for a couple years," they just don't realize that overkill is not the way to go about it.
- mrmorden76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4OK go and spend your 10k on this box and the 1st time you need to call tech support and get placed on hold only to end up talking to someone in India who can just barley speak English. So PLEASE waste 10k on this box.
Who needs 4 video cards? yes we all want 4 video cards, but at what point do we say enough. - andreparis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35 years from now, it will be selling in the bargain bin for $200
- matthiasgoodman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"3 cylinders sucked trying to go up into the canyons and over mountain" True, hence the Geo "Metro" name (emphasis on metro.)
