Teen's captor used a C64 computer
edition.cnn.com — Police combing through the house where Natascha Kampusch was held captive for 8 1/2 years said Tuesday they made an unusual discovery: her captor, a communications technician, used an obsolete computer -- and his odd choice now threatens to complicate their investigation.

- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+68How is this a problem? There are ***** of people still working with C64's that haven't turned theirs into doorstops. There's a local club right here in my city that still utilizes the machines for things such as model train controllers, DJs, and other junk. I'm sure there's a similar group in Austria. Has to be if this guy was still using his. Hit the group up for solutions on extracting the data or hire one of them... with a background check of course. :)
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66Yeah, I'm sure by tomorrow there will be dozens of people lined up at the police HQ, willing to explain to them how the whole thing works.

- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's not like he has a hard drive in the thing. If he has any data worth looking at, it's on floppies and it can be extracted by various means, e.g. CBM4Linux: http://www.lb.shuttle.de/puffin/cbm4linux/

Don't cops know about Google? Or technology for that matter? They can't "transmit the data to a modern computer without loss" my ass!
- nj10ii, on 10/12/2007, -195/+22I wonder if anyone asked Natascha if she had ever heard of Steve Irwin, and what she thinks about all the fuss about him getting killed by a fish?
I mean after all, in her experience of being kidnapped, raped, beaten down, held prisoner in a dank basement cell for 8 1/2 years, and heres this guy thats been asking for it for the last 5 yrs finally gets his, and everybody is surprised!!

So idiot number one, QuimZ; is it only people in Australia than know of Irwin that you immediately conclude the original poster mixed up the countries?
Idiot number four, Celeron; Do you think Austria is some middle age country with no TV or other news media?
You guys are plain stupid and by blocking him you are actually doing the rest of us a favour. You won't see his comments and you won't post your ***** in return.

Just today we (aussies) had another legend, morot racer Peter Brock, kill himself while indulging his risky career and no doubt the news on every channel will be filled with brock this, brock that, brock everything else.
Sheesh, people have some truely screwy priorities if they think that there is any kind of parity between these jumped up celebs doing stuff they KNOW is dangerous but keep doing it regardless of the consequences, and some girl whos' life is totally ruined through no fault of her own! - spooq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2bloody hell, Brock DID just die! its a bad week to be an Aussie... Elizabeth Smart is a household name, but you're going to have to google Alexis Patterson to know who that is. Even worse, how many people still think Iraq was linked to 9/11 but can recite all the details of this case? - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23You're right, that was the first time that I had heard of Alexis Patterson.
The media really needs to take a hard look at themselves for the way they practically ignore the cases where it's not a little white girl. This is *****. We all know about Megan's Law, everyone knows about Jon Benet, the world even holds its breath for a runaway bride, but if it's a little black girl, you have to look for sites like this http://www.freewebs.com/missingblackkids/faq.htm
to even hear about them.

- sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Forensic process doesn’t allow you to just jump on any ol’computer and start clackin’ away at it to get data. It has to be done so none of the data will be compromised and so that the defendant can’t claim data was placed on the computer or on a disk.
They normally use special equipment and computers that are set up so they can not be accused of compromising the data or the system and planting evidence etc, and since most investigations don’t involve an C64’s it does complicate things but certainly doesn’t stop them. Honestly it’s just a small speed bump that the media is turning into a huge obstacle.

Not even the idiots in the system would of allowed that..He would of been free. Eating his meals paid by the people of that area of the world. As well as a place to sleep, etc. Pathetic it is.
As far as the story..It covered that he had a C64 It didn't cover what he would hold on there that would have any evidence of any kind..Didn't really go into details as to what they was looking for.

- Neorio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The C64 is the bestselling home computer to date in number of units sold. While I doubt the fact that they will find any porn on his disks (desipte the fact that the C64 has the ability to view JPEGs in a VERY fuzzy format), there are software tools out there to convert PETSCII to ASCII.
There could be some technical hiccups if he managed to save his text data in GEOS on CMD hardware (such as a hard drive), but even these can be extracted with the right software and A LOT of free time. No decent encryption program really exists for obfuscating data on the C64, so my guess is that as long as they find the right person and the right hardware, they'll manage to pry all the information from the system.
As for data loss.... well, those 5.25" floppies were never really reliable.- KUKBAHLAM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12No Sir! The old school 5.25 disks were awesome. My Elephants and Verbatims are still readable after 20+ years.

It is also important to point out that the tards at the police don't know what they are doing.... 'data loss?' um.. I have a bunch of 5, 1/4 disks lying around that I used to use (I think Maniac Mansion, Paperboy, Paperclip & Aliens) that are probably bad now... but that is because I haven't used them since 1987!!! anything used in the past decade should still be good, and any sort of digital transfer shouldn't involve data loss. 1:1 digital copies anyone? Plus they could just USE THE F!ing computer and write down (print out) what he wrote. Perhaps they need an expert.... Google is available for hire right? Most of those people (94 at the moment) could lend a hand.. jeez. I wish they would just do a bit of work and seek out those who can help; WE need to stop these pervs.
- brindon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is easy to connect a C64 to a modern computer. It is easy to transfer the data. All that may need to be written is a file importer, which could be assigned to the local university for a "Intro to Computer Science" type class. I AM KORAK! - grat2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I 1st learn to hack and phreak on my C64, later I stepped up to a C128! Ahhh, the good old days with BBS's!
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually had a Vic-20 long before I got my 64. Seeing that commercial brought back good memories, especially the Omega Race game which I played for countless hours on it.
Now back on subject, I have to admit that creep has great taste in computers. The C=64 in my opinion was the greatest computer ever made! - grat2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember having to load Pole Position off the tape drive when I first got it, that took 15 minutes!
The C=64 and Apple IIc were two of the greatest computer in history.

- kayjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, the article makes it seem like they need an archaelogist. roflmao.
last time i checked the police ITSELF used obsolete computers.
hmmm, maybe they should talk to some teachers...
most pcs in schools still have 5.25' floppies.... - Wasyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You got to be kidding they can't translate that these guys are a real CSI aren't they?
All you need is vice an emulator,an old commodore drive you can get that off ebay and an X1542 cable.
Heck I have a working C128 and move data betrween it and a modern computer all the time. - clevergeezer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was always suspicious of Commodore users. I had a ZX Spectrum 48K, which never did me any harm. Honest, Guv!
- Trogdor420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I happen to be the proud owner of an original vanilla C-64 and the slightly sexier 64C. In addition to that I have two 1541 drives, a Commodore 64 monitor and TONS of floppies that still work to this day. I call shenanigans on this story!! I used to play Frisbee with these very same floppies 20+ years ago and I can still get my Impossible Mission fix any time I please.
