- QuimZ, on 10/12/2007, -10/+112You do know Austria and Australia are very far apart?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+93This is the perfect digg story: Current events + technology + mildly pointless.
! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+93He may have been a ***** up bastard, but at least he had good taste in computers
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -29/+104I think we all can agree anyone who uses a C64 is a child molester.
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+74you sorry sack of *****, a little girl was kidnapped and raped for almost 9 years. There was no drinking, she was 10 years old.
You insensitive *****. RTFA next time and STFU... - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67Yeah, I'm sure by tomorrow there will be dozens of people lined up at the police HQ, willing to explain to them how the whole thing works.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+69How is this a problem? There are ***** of people still working with C64's that haven't turned theirs into doorstops. There's a local club right here in my city that still utilizes the machines for things such as model train controllers, DJs, and other junk. I'm sure there's a similar group in Austria. Has to be if this guy was still using his. Hit the group up for solutions on extracting the data or hire one of them... with a background check of course. :)
- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56"t would be difficult "to transmit the data to a modern computer without loss."
WTF are these idiots talking about? These people are running the country? Oh god we are doomed.
ZModem you idiots!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Wow....
You are the biggest ***** alive. - FMJ87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47do you have any idea what you're saying?
- blobdole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48By definition, someone always beats Digg to the punch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Dont say the "s" word around here. It upsets the trolls
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38What do they figure he has on it? Incriminating evidence? The ***** turned himself into roadkill (railkill?) by throwing himself in front of a train. He did it. He saved the government the trouble of a trial and keeping him in jail for the rest of his life. Case closed, as far as I'm concerned.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Obsolete? It's a f*cking commodore 64, a computer with a following still that's probably as big as apples. :P Now, if he were using the enigma machine...

- schwegler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Did he think that this was a Natalie Holloway thing? Wow....
- dagooh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Probably he just had it to play games, I doubt that the police will get anything important from that computer...
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26So how long till some dumbass reporter tries to link C64 use to slavery?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27exactly my sentiments. good riddance to that piece of *****, and if there's a hell i'm sure he's got satan stuffing pineapples up his arse.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26What, do they think they'll find an ASCII map or something?

Case cracked. - Arancaytar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21They have witness statements indicating that he may have had an accomplice.

Priceless - realyst, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Do us a favor and castrate yourself.
Add some icing to that cake and try to stop a semi with your body. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"difficult to transmit the data to a modern computer without loss"
wha?
Right real difficult. A null modem cable + ~20 keystrokes = a perfect digital copy.
Somebody please get these guys a pop-tart or something. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24You're right, that was the first time that I had heard of Alexis Patterson.
The media really needs to take a hard look at themselves for the way they practically ignore the cases where it's not a little white girl. This is *****. We all know about Megan's Law, everyone knows about Jon Benet, the world even holds its breath for a runaway bride, but if it's a little black girl, you have to look for sites like this http://www.freewebs.com/missingblackkids/faq.htm
to even hear about them.
I'm not diminishing the plight of the white children who have been victimized, but where's the media attention for the other children? - alexonix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19my situation is quite the opposite...
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I still have 6 working Commodores. 3 C=64's, 2 128's and a 128D.
No sex slaves though. They never released those for the C= in the states . - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17How about Kermit? One transfer manager to rule them all...
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@timmarhy
Hopefully, they ran out of pineapples and have moved on to the emergency cactus supply. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Agreed. But add "outdated" before the technology part :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24"He may have been a ***** up bastard, but at least he had good taste in computers"
To be fair though, doesn't everyone who have good taste in computers, by definition, a ***** up bastard (myself included)? ;p - Arancaytar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Well, OBVIOUSLY people who use old technology are still living in the past, ie are anachronistic and unwilling to accept modern concepts like the abolishment of slavery. Doesn't make sense?
Didn't think so. - vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Next we'll be privy to his 8 track collection
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15It's not like he has a hard drive in the thing. If he has any data worth looking at, it's on floppies and it can be extracted by various means, e.g. CBM4Linux: http://www.lb.shuttle.de/puffin/cbm4linux/
Then you're only a LOAD"$",8 away from whatever you want to know.
Don't cops know about Google? Or technology for that matter? They can't "transmit the data to a modern computer without loss" my ass! - cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15poke commands make me laugh...
- KUKBAHLAM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13No Sir! The old school 5.25 disks were awesome. My Elephants and Verbatims are still readable after 20+ years.
- Killroy1971, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Someone will show up with a null modem cable and software to translate the C64 code to something a modern PC can read.
Or the could just find an old dot matrix printer and make hard copies of everything!
Where there's a will, there's a way! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It might contain his super secret pedo diary...
- wolever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12 Ah of CORSE! The X1541 cable. Even my GRANDMOTHER would know that!
- NoSuchAgency, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Sadly she will never have a life of good memories."
Except what she makes from now on. You would be amazed at what people can survive. - timta2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yes, it would work. I used to transfer files from my C64 to my Mac all of the time. I think I used to transfer via X-Modem using terminal programs on the two (CCGMS on the C64 and Z-Term on the Mac).
- Sefirosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's not.
A five minute search on google for "X1541 cable" will solve that problem to transfer the data. Then, depending on what software he did use, it may be possible to convert the data to a usable PC format or else, any recent emulator should do.
The other problem is finding someone with the "know how", that shouldn't be too hard either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i guess it would be worth investigating to see if he had help or was part of a kiddy porn ring.
those sick freaks are very well organised by the sound of it. i can see it now, 100's of pedo's all standardising on c64's because they know police are too dumb to use it if it's not windows based. - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9as someone said - accomplice, or maybe evidence of other crimes (If he had other girls locked away somewhere, it would be nice to know where)
- zhulien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The investigation is probably run by morons who think every PC is a Windows PC.
- futaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Commodore 64's have been around forever Prehistoric africans have even carved wooden idols. http://forum.419eater.com/john_boko.htm
