- jecrawf, on 06/22/2009, -1/+58If FIOS was available in my area...
- reddikilowatt, on 06/22/2009, -1/+54Squirrels do eat through cables, even fiber optic lines. If you ever see a cable with a big ball of white yarn sticking out, it is a fiber that a squirrel chewed down through the armor and into the Kevlar. I don't think they like the taste of the gel used to keep water from getting in, so they usually don't cause outages right away, but if that break isn't fixed it will cause problems down the road.
- MetalHead73, on 06/22/2009, -2/+40I haven't had a single issue with Verizon FiOS for the year and a half I've had it.
It's absolutely wonderful as a matter of fact.
Squirrels or not, upgrade to FiOS if you are able to, you won't regret it. - ifruit, on 06/22/2009, -0/+30yes sir, I get on my friends FIOS and it makes my 10mb Comcast look like dial-up.
It will never be available here in the boonies. - bstew22, on 06/22/2009, -0/+24and knowing is half the battle
- SPNKrPunk, on 06/22/2009, -0/+21Oh the squirrels are taking the copper all right. But they aren't eating it.
They're trading it on the market for cash, so they can buy BILLIONS of nuts. - LiquidIse, on 06/22/2009, -1/+21And the telecom industries continue to set new standards in customer service.
- ASfinkterSezWut, on 06/22/2009, -0/+19...Comcast would be out of business.
- bubbameister33, on 06/22/2009, -0/+18Now we know!!!
- marytormey, on 06/21/2009, -5/+22If you don't want to get scammed into overpaying for phone service that doesn't work then don't buy phone service from Verizon.
- antdude, on 06/22/2009, -0/+14If I let squirrels chew up my copper lines, will VZ bring FIOS here? :)
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -2/+13"Never mind that FiOS doesn't work during a blackout for more than a few hours, or that the problem had nothing to do with squirrels."
Several HOURS of blackout phone service is not enough? - Brak710101, on 06/22/2009, -0/+11Whether people like it or not, they are eventually going to move everyone over to FiOS or at least a FiOS backbone. It's really getting to the point that it is no longer worth maintaining the copper lines, and Verizon is deciding to move on.
As for the Verizon FiOS phones not lasting long in power outages, if it's anything like Comcast's newer Arris boxes, it should last a while. Ours lasted 3 days after a storm that Comcast was quicker at cleaning up after than the power company. - newl, on 06/22/2009, -0/+9I used to work for Michigan Bell/Ameritech/SBC and we had a poster up in the garage that showed a picture of a squirrel equal dollar sign. Quite true too. Many a faults were caused by the lovely furry critters. Much overtime was to be had. :)
- doctechnical, on 06/22/2009, -0/+9True that. And rats and mice chew on cables as well (I speak from experience here). I think the primary reason is that all these critters have teeth that keep growing their entire life, and they have to gnaw on things to keep them from growing to large. Talk to anyone who owns a pet guinea pig, you have to buy them chew-toys on a regular basis.
- manstein01, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7...I'd still sign up squirrels or not...I am so sick of Comcast's BS, but they have zero competition in my area.
- Chakz, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7I've talked to several "Debbies" before and it may just be a hunch but I bet she was one of those people that would just not shut up and the rep wanted her off the phone. People can't just accept the fact that sometimes you don't know every answer in the world and will push you until you lie just on the off chance that they might ***** off.
/Needs new job - darkNiGHTS, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Why don't you look on their website?
http://www22.verizon.com/Residential/FiOSInternet/ ...
For $120 a month, you get home phone, fios TV and 25mbps/15mbps internet. Cox' plans look like a joke compared to FIOS.
https://ww2.cox.com/residential/cleveland/pricing- ... - Azriel7, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Package deal crap, I do NOT need a phone service nor TV. Just give me internet and that's IT!
- Chakz, on 06/22/2009, -1/+7Or it could just be that the sales rep really doesn't know what she's talking about. Last week Rogers tried to tell me to go with their 500MB plan instead of the 6GB one because that way I would get a lot more data...
- chrisinsocalif, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6I am jealous, really jealous of your internet speeds.
- jcc6655, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6not compared to regular phones being mostly power grid independent.
- TiMMY8765, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6I've had power outages last for days. and I'm not even in a hurricane zone or something like that. just snow or heavy rain can bring down the power for a good while.
- Super6, on 06/22/2009, -2/+8Phone lines have power through them so if the CO loses power so do you. Plus, there's always cell phones.
- arashamedani, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6I get an average of about 300kbps.
Be thankful. - reddikilowatt, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Most (over 90%) of power failures are less than 2 hours. The conservative rating on the UPS's used in telelcom are at least 2 hours, and many last much longer. If you're worried about not having enough backup power, get a small generator.
- OnAsideNote, on 06/22/2009, -2/+8The black squirrels around here are mean.
They chase the brown squirrels around
and leave them pregnant with no child support - doctechnical, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Plain old wired phones do NOT need power from the grid to operate (which is why everyone ought to keep a cheap one around just in case), they're powered at the CO, which has battery backup enough to last until the generators kick in.
Now if all you have are coordless phones, you're pretty well screwed during an outage. - teamgwho, on 06/22/2009, -1/+61) FIOS isnt VOIP. Or internet based in any way. So the complaintant is wrong
2) FIOS signals can be rerouted so if squirrels chew a cable or a drunk guy takes out a pole, unless its the pole that leads directly to your house they can reroute the signal till the cable in question is fixed. Can't do that with copper. So yes, FIOS is going to be more reliable. - pcnerd37, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5This happened to me a couple of years back. For better or worse, I have Comcast. A couple of years ago, for a couple of weeks, we had a very intermittent connection. It would never drop off completely, but after not using it for long, download speeds would slow to that of dial-up while upload speeds were fine. We were baffled by it as were many Comcast phone support idiots for a couple of weeks. They kept saying that there were likely local issues with the service and it would pass in time. Finally, after nearly 2 weeks, we finally convinced them to come out and check. There was nothing wrong on our end but when the tech went out and checked the connection at the poll, he found that a squirrel had chewed threw the line. I really hope that never happens again.
- MooseOfReason, on 06/22/2009, -5/+10Since you can't spell "Limbaugh" correctly, I don't think you could get past Secret Service.
- chikmag777, on 06/22/2009, -1/+6limburger = stinky cheese
i think it was on purpose - inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5***** Verizon!
- quirkopatra, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5Even a blind squirrel finds an old Verizon phone line every now and then.
- renatoc8, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5I dont get why people are so excited about FIOS... From what I've seen, their speeds are about 15Mbps... I get 25Mbps from a regular cable connection (Cox Communications)...
- jordanlgta, on 06/22/2009, -2/+6Verizon isn't allowing the real story to get out.
- richiewrt, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4Embarq (at least in my area) doesn't block any ports.
- barfooz, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5Don't most ISPs block port 80?
- rhynost, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5Not sure why you are getting dugg down. Verizon blocks certain outgoing ports.
- teamgwho, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4in a blackout your cable modem won't work, which means no internet which means no VOIP thru Comcast.
//duh
//at least FIOS has a backup battery for 8+ hours of service. - palehorse864, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3That does it! I'ma ship a cart full of squirrels to my area!
- linagee, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3Why does FiOS not work during a black out? Why don't they transmit AC power alongside the fiber wires? (24VAC or something) They can power that from their substations with backup generators.
- reddikilowatt, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3Another tale of tree rats causing an outage:
http://www.nyquistcapital.com/2006/11/27/squirrels ... - inactive, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4I have a cell phone. Several, actually, between the various people I live with. I think I'd be cool.
- Mike17102, on 06/22/2009, -4/+7Unless you want to have a website on your computer, because they block port 80.
- GamerXR72, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3I'll vouch for this.
FiOS is the best internet Ive had. It'll be a damn shame if it's not available in whatever area I end up moving too eventually. - Wareznuke, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3I have Comcast cable and the benefit of living in the city on a main road is that my service has been flawless in one year. 30/8M data with awesome signal quality and NO downtime. Having cable and living in a rural area is a different story, not fun.
- Dauntless1, on 06/22/2009, -0/+31/12th? So, Comcast is offering 400+ mbps on a symmetrical line now? When did that happen?
- Mike17102, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3Most ISPs block outgoing port 25, as an anti-spam measure.
But blocking port 80 is rare, and something anyone tech minded should care about. Maybe digg isnt for tech literate people anymore, but I sure as ***** want to be able to throw up a small website on my connection if I want to.
My guess is that most of the buries came from people who dont even understand what blocking incoming port 80 would do. - Zinator, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3The squirrels weren't going after her... they were trying to find that "Can you hear me now?" guy.
