- Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lame, makes it sound like they are going to show you how to do something to reduce the noise, all they do is tell you to replace your parts with quiter ones. Oh yeah and to reduce your cd rom noise, dont use it, Great help!

NOW THAT'S HOW YOU SOUND PROOF A PC!!!
THE YOSHI WAY - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buy long video/audo/USB/etc. cables - really, it ain't that much.
Put PC in other room.
Enjoy quiet.
Low tech, but it works. - SilentJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And the power supply is the most powerful graphics card available...
- glucoseboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg,
agree, the article is too simplistic, (what? slow down your optical drive to make it quieter??, Hell, why stop there. Why not go back to using your 486? No one ever complained of PC noise back then)
Agree with shiftt, go to www.silentpcreview.com for some real advice. - matsiescruff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0way too expensive and not very useful.
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oh yeah and to reduce your cd rom noise, dont use it, Great help!"
lol...that was the one I was interested in...went to it first...once I read it I knew the rest of the "how-to" had to be lame. - LiquidRain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Silent PC Review is the best.
That said, it doesn't take much to make a PC relatively quiet. To make it *silent* is something else. - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and the article is a mere 11 months old!!!
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0save yourself time and dont click the link
if you DO want to make your box quieter, go to www.silentpcreview.com - bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So basically, just replace your fans with quieter ones. If you're going to buy case fans, I'd recommend under 20dB, and you can probably find that for around $10. A new power supply can cost in upwards in $30, but you can locate a nice one on newegg.com.
- PureMassacre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ bad grammar??? maybe you just dont know anything about correct grammar....
that would actually be the most correct grammar, using commas between each of the adjectives describing a noun without the conjunction 'and' - RiddickRom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure that sound proofing material is that simple. If density were all it was about, then there are far more dense materials around.
From what I could gather (and im no expert) you need two layers, a soft later and a harder layer. The sound penetrates the first soft layer very easily then hits the more dense layer and is reflected back but still being in the softer layer, the sound is diffused and loses energy getting back out.
Still, I'm sure combining your dense cleaning foam with softer foam would be superior. - themachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"without spinning, and often noisy, fans"
Nice grammar, who the hell is the editor over there? - gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It should be titled "Buy a Soundproof PC" because all they did was replace the loud parts with quieter ones.
- shack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is worthless, I would expect anyone using Digg to understand already the basic concepts he spelled out. If you really want a silent pc try this: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/09/strip_out_the_fans/
- enjayenel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or put your PC in an isobox http://www.custom-consoles.com/isobox.php (for some $)
- LiquidRain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I could edit comments, I would.

Let's show Digg the REAL place to get silencing info! - jnayar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lame.. to solve my noise problems I just bought a pc-60 lian li case. The fans are nice and quiet, variable speed in front, cools more then enough. Most people concerned about pc noise already know there are quiter functioning parts out there. I mean ***** I just turn on the tv or listen to some music and I cant even tell my pc is making any noise. -J
- RiddickRom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But those solutions cost substantial amounts of money. If you have that kind of money to throw around, you could just buy fanless everything.
Maybe I'm just a cheapskate - dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"without spinning, and often noisy, fans"
Nice grammar, who the hell is the editor over there?

Hahahahaha. What a God damned idiot. You're attempting to be a grammar Nazi about proper grammar! - RiddickRom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've sound proofed *bit of a stretch calling it that* a PC. I read about this noise cancelling foam, which is quite expensive and wondered if I could make my own foam that did the same job for almost no cash.
I cant say how effective it really is against the pro foam but using a thick layer of medium density foam and sticking a thin layer of dense foam onto that creates something that in theory is the same, with the same noise canceling properties. You need to get creative with some tools if you want to increase surface area with v cuts but i didnt go that far.
It really is as simple as it sounds, glue the foam, cut it to the size of your side panels, and any areas that you think sound will escape (the real hotspots for sound are in front of the cpu though so foam just on one panel there will help) This will cause a rise in temperature so you really needed decent cooling to begin with.
Without any measurements all I can tell you is that it changed the sound that eminated from the PC from something that was bothersome, especially at night, to something easier on the ears. I'd say none of this is worthwhile unless you have something better than a cheap thin case. You really need some rigidity in your case frame to help reduce that vibration noise that is so common in cheap pc's. Nothing will help that except a new case. - jtms1200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this is a BS article designed to sell product. No digg, I gave it a "ok this is lame"
- dstart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OR buy one of these http://www.quietpc.com/uk/tnn.php#tnn500af
- olego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Much better was the article at Tom's Hardware about submerging the PC into oil, and removing the fans altogether.
- bondg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've not tried this (because my machine is pretty quiet), but it oughta work wonders....
Ever seen those Magic Eraser cleaning sponges?? They clean with no chemicals, only water. Well, first, they really do a bang-up job of cleaning stains that otherwise won't come out (try it on your tub!), but the real coolness is that they're made from soundproofing material.
Turns out soundproofing material has very tiny fibers that work their way into the tiniest nooks and crannies and that's why these things clean so good. Anyway, I'm guessing if you line your case with these things, you oughta be able to knock off quite a few decibels.
Yah, if you have easy access to real-life soundproofing materials, this would be an expensive alternative, but hey! these freaking things are sittin there waiting on you at the grocery store!
What are you waitin for!? Go test this for me and report back! - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol on the page mentioning the Power supply, they say that the Zalman PSU is one of the most advanced graphics cards in the world. Big typo!!!
- Opelious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, the end result is to buy all new parts, replace them, and defrag.
Lame. - nebbyfoshebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sucks.. I can't believe I actually read and watched that.
- scarabic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Commas can be used to surround parenthetical phrases, but in this case I actually think that parentheses would be the more approriate (and more attractive) choice of punctuation.
- diggdeeznutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg....old and ancient news.
I like my rig cold for gaming so it's a bit on the noisy side. Running a fan controller can drop the noise easily when working. - VinCenT13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Horrible article. no digg
- Phyrefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cnet? Give me a break.
If you want to build a silent pc, start here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/index.php - oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There are only two ways to keep your PC quiet, since the PROBLEM itself, is the heat created by the CPU, and N-S bridge chips, as well as Video Cards.
You can do two things...
1. You can buy a new AMD Chip, and get a LOW RPM CPU fan. This alone will make the whole thing quieter, AND make your pc last a lot longer too.
2. You can keep your Intel Chip, go to liquid cooling, larger, quieter fans, case insulation, expensive but quiet power supplies, ad infinitem. THere is no end to what all can be done, including moving the whole thing to a closet near you. Tough, if you do much in the way of cd or dvd's.
NewEgg, or Tiger Software have some of the biggest and least expensive of the cooling components available. (no stock owned by me). You can get the stuff anywhere tho'. It will require a whole new feature set of mindset... Learn a whole lot about the damage heat causes and how to prevent it.
I personally believe that AMD has the right idea, and I then further it, with Low rpm fans, with bearings, Gorgeous and quiet 500 watt power supplies, and little coolers for the North/South bridges. Not to mention adequate (not stock) cooling for the video card... and a better dvd player, is worth the money, when the spinup doesn't spin you UP.....
Thank You for your time.
