- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Man a global recall? The money they are going to lose with that on top of the money they are going to lose when the PS3 fails on top of the money they are going to lose when Blu-Ray fails... Is Sony going to even be around in 3 years?
- Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25haha ***** again sony
- hobbla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Actually, this just goes to show you how many big companies rely on Sony for important parts. Sure they'll lose a lot of money on this most epic of recalls, but I'm sure they already made more money off all the batteries and such they sold before hand. They don't sell these things for a loss you know. You don't see any big car companies tanking after huge recalls either.
Save your electro-apocalyptical fantasies for another time. - neolimitex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think VAIO is safe. I suspect Sony has kept the best for themselves. -_-
- jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10link from the sony vaio support guy

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
Thankfully I have a Sanyo (and a non-burnt crotch).
Anyone have a tip for Windows users? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7at least psps aren't exploding
- jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And what about the sony laptops, anybody knows? i have 2 vaios "ready to explode"... *****!
- AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7From the article, Sony is "working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to formulate a plan for the recall."
In other words, stay tuned. - McShaken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Hrm.... Sony is part of the RIAA, which has taken 12 year old kids and dead people to court....

They also distributed that wonderful illegal root kit to our PCs.... Now they have a worldwide battery recall, costing them tons of $$$.... Maybe there's something to this thing called Karma....

"but I'm sure they already made more money off all the batteries and such they sold before hand".
1. Tell that to the shareholders
2. That money's already spent. It actually makes it worse, if anything because the money already reported as earnings for a previous earnings period will not be on the current books to cancel out the negative that's going to hit them this period.
"You don't see any big car companies tanking after huge recalls either."
A car manufacturer sells a car for $25k and then has to 'recall' it (tell the customer to bring it in for service) and they have to replace a fuse or door latch- probably - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5... yet.
Does this recall include PSP Batteries?
*pulls battery out of PSP* - jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3damn.... A recal on ALL Li-Ion Batteries made by sony. Thats alot of batteries!
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm, my Compal notebook has a Sony battery... but Compal doesn't sell their laptops directly, but lets other companies rebrand them. Unless the store that built the laptop will take part in the recall, looks like I'm stuck with an exploding battery. Unless Sony wants to make this a REAL recall and take actual batteries from consumers.
Because let's face it, "recall only if the OEM agrees to issue a recall" isn't really a recall at all. If you're happy to let most people with the product keep using it because their OEM isn't on board, then it's a PR stunt. - majinboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't know about all manufacturer's, but for my Dell, by double clicking on battery icon in taskbar brings up a little info app which shows the present charge. Clicking on the battery picture on that little popup gives the manufacturer and SN of the battery. If all else fails, theres probably an entry somewhere in Control Panel.
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The way this reads all batteries have been recalled.
- FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Here is what the above posters command looks like.

I have a Latitude X1 and my batteries aren't on the list, so you may be safe. - lesskiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3At first, Sony claimed that the reason the other manufacturers had problems was because of the power input levels. Sony had claimed they weren't having a problem. I don't know if that story has changed, but no matter how you cut it, it's another huge problem for Sony.
biffsputnik brings up a very good point about the earnings already reported. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Web Weasel
Why not an Ass-in-the-box ( http://www.assinthebox.com/ ) with thermite? - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't Sony also sell recharchable Li-Ion AA,AAA, etc batteries??? I wonder what's going on with all the other batteries?
Oh and as far as Sony loosing money on batteries, ya they do make killer profits off their batteries, but when you think about all the trouble they are going to have to go thru to replace these batteries that as well is going to cost some $$$. It adds a lot of other costs in besides the cost of just manufacturing all these batteries a second time.
I still am unhappy with Sony for the Rootkits and am still hoping to see Blu-ray fail, which I think it will fail as far as a movie format goes, but I do see a good chance of it surviving as a data backup/storage format for the PC. Unless holographic DVD becomes available to the consumer in the near future. - rawis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently it's ALL laptop batteries, no exceptions.
Lithium is on it's way out, thankfully. It's not a new problem. There has been several cases every year for quite some time now.
The question is what the difference is between the batteries that you hand in, and the ones they give you in return. And if those are safe then why didn't they sell those in the first place. Considering the safety risks, money just isn't an answer that customers should accept.
Who of the laptop brands doesn't use Sony? Any useful ones?!
By the way, anybody remember the PowerBook 5300, or the "HindenBook" as Apple called it. That's Sony Lithium batteries.
Hi-FD, SACD, MiniDisc, PlayStation and they have, like with PS3, been lagging there feet long enough to loose with Blue-Ray.
Wow, that's a track-record. But I have to say that one of the reasons I'm so disappointed is that I like Sony from old, and they do have products now that I really want to like today. - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice comment, I like when people use references =D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Why are all batteries from laptops exploding all of a sudden? Is it just new laptops or all laptops period? I mean within the last 2-4 months more batteries have exploded that bombs in any war, real talk.
- huongdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any info for us in the UK? This site has no mention of the recall:
http://www.sony.co.uk/support - mobius20, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You can bet QA is going to the ***** while [whoever] is cranking out replacement batteries.
With luck - these quickly-produced replacement batteries will be just as likely to fail! Hah! - biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3cont'd from above(comment error idk)
probably.... less than $100, sometimes as little as a $5 or $10 fix.
Sony sold a battery. And has to replace A BATTERY.
If Ford recalled Mustangs and had to give you a new one, you'd better believe they'd be tanking. Thankfully for Sony they sell more than batteries, but don't think this doesn't REALLY hurt them. - au071, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another reason for them to pray for a huge PS3 success; but then again, each one they sell, they lose money; so I guess their profit will be pretty bad for the next few years.
- frozendice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Is this going to include ALL of the Apple laptops also?
- Reese268, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just keeps getting worse and worse for Sony....
Sorry guys, I think you're screwed. - jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why was rodon dugg down? Sometimes I just dont understand alot of you
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The last Sony thing I bought was the PS2, and after this recent debarcle, I think it'll be a VERY long time before I buy anything with the Sony name on it again. The PS3 excluded-- I wouldn't buy that thing no matter who was manufacturing it.
Yes, I know the laptops aren't Sony, but they're getting a bit of a reputation now. - valenciastudent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because, you know, Sony would never just pull a PR stunt......
*Patiently waits for the announcement that the batteries include rootkits - netbee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1非常好
- rodon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7I just got my replacement battery for my powerbook G4 this week. I did notice that the surface of the label side of the battery was way more lumpy than that of the bad sony battery. Oh well not a big deal, at least my new battery isn't at risk of exploding... I hope.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2VERY VERY old story.
The best part - as soon as Dell found out and posted their special batt recall site, SONY publicly stated at that time, that they would not be fully reimbursing Dell, but they would help.
Of course now, with SONY actualy announcing today on AP news, they would have to fully pay back ALL 4 OEMs any damages and costs due to recalls and new batteries.
If they don't, no one will ever buy a battery assembly from them.
It won;t matter much in the latter case, as Sony will just off-sell its battery assembly division to one thier parent company's other subsidiaries (Reverse Karetsu). - dreslimmul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope the PS3 has as much fanfare in Japan as Sony and all the analysts say they do, because if it doesn't... Sony better stick with the TVs, for shareholders sake. This is definetly making me rethink buying anything Sony and I can't be the only one. Global Recall = Huge Costly Mistake, which hurts stock and reputation. November 17th, please save this company.
Wii, take it easy on Sony because it isn't feeling too good right now. - Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I was thinking the same thing. I'd skip the PSP for christmas this year unless you want to give an expensive present to somebody you don't like.
- myitchydog, on 02/25/2009, -0/+0Don't buy your batteries from eBay... that is where the recalled batteries find there way back in to the market cheap. Instead try here:

Manufacturer: Hewlett Packard.
(Hope it's not pretexting :-) ) - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2or you could do what i do and unplug the battery and look at it?

No love for the Canadians. :( - neladua, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"give up the ghost"? Perhaps you meant "throw in the towel"?
Give up the ghost is from the Bible, says phrases.org.uk:
'And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.''
Kinda funny, but doesn't really describe Sony's battery recalling position (unless Sony is God). - puppycoloda, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2damn
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4The phrase "Karma's a bitch" comes to mind XD
If this were slashdot, I'd give you +1 Interesting... but instead, I dugg your comment. - webgod61, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Maybe what happened was that Sony was putting so much effort into the PS3 launch that they took away resources from all their other divisions and now that the PS3 is close to launch, they can tend to other matters????
- waverider1899, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Hey Jacobo
I don't know about you and your VAIOs, but I ain't putting any Sony battery operated device what-so-ever near my lap!
I value my genetic code, and wish to have the capacity to pass it on to a future generation. - bryguy000, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Bout time.
