- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -7/+192Man, I knew Sony was crazy, but I didn't know they had the power to disconinue ALL computer monitors!
Evil tyrants! - JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -13/+61This article is dated "October 9th 2006", more up to date news please?
- postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -7/+54after repairing several LCDs you end up finding the same parts over and over in all brands.
there is no reason to pay more for any LCD if all the specs are equal.
tip of the day: you your screen goes dead on your laptop or desktop lcd do a google search for the the words
"lcd inverter" http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=lcd+inverter&spell=1
then take it apart and get on ebay and find the part you need.
sonys where pretty but not worth the price. - Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -9/+55I will surely miss that damn line running through the middle of the screen to be sure.

Looks like someone didn't quite catch on to the joke there. - weirdlookinguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42I don't miss their LCD's much, but it saddens me when I remember their Trinitron days..... such great CRT's are now history...
- Havs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40The consumer is finally realizing that the Sony name on the front isn't worth the 20-50% markup on price. Their products are average, at best. A LONG time ago the Sony name used to mean quality and superiority, now they're merely another electronics manufacturer.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -30/+61Wonder how long until they drop ALL the PS3's
- Sasabune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31After Sony's acquiring of Sonic Foundry, they are now considering dropping ACID...
- jaydj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27If anyone wants to click-through to the real story, you can see that Sony will continue to make LCD monitors for the professional market. Sony has not dropped ALL monitors.
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Especially in their German factories!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hEAAp0cPkU&eurl= - Tarmanydyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22FFS, I still use my Trinitron that I got in the mid 90's, works like a charm!
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Yeah, Daedalus81. Brillaint logic.
Stocks are waiting months after the story is first reported to drop. - aarons44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16They're not history yet. Check craigslist or eBay. Where I live there is a store that specializes in used monitors. I bought my wife a 21" Trinitron CRT a few months ago for $75. Brand new. You couldn't even tell that it had ever been used before. Not bad for a monitor that was originally $500. I still use a 19" CRT Trinitron as well. I'd like to get a 21", but I'm holding out for one of those massive 24" models that they made. When you look at a Sony Trinitron compared to any LCD, you see much better contrast and color on the CRT. No contest.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+161. Find a old and negative Sony story
2. Post it on Digg and act like it is new
3. ??????
4. Profit. - gibler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14They need to be more careful when using those forklifts!
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think Samsung are the best.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Yup, they're going to focus on laptop batteries now.
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Sony makes quality products. ... Cause there is no way you can do what Sony has achieved over the recent years."
That's the thing, they made quality products, in recent years however their products have paled in comparison to their rivals. They seem to have focused more on their name than their quality, and their products suffer because of it. There is a reason they are getting scathing reports from everyone about their latest offerings, and it's not because of ignorance. Hell, I'd argue that you are ignorant for blindly defending a company that has clearly fallen from grace - it's not dead, far from it, but it is certainly not the best name in electronics any more.
This isn't recent either, when I did some work experience at a retail outlet what, five years ago, the general consensus was that Panasonic was the best buy around, and since then Sony certainly hasn't gained any ground, they've gone downhill in comparison to their competitors. It's sad, but don't even dare to call people ignorant for rightfully bashing inferior products, the whole idea of bashing inferior products is to prevent others from following the same path and perhaps inspire the person making the inferior product to make something better instead.
The comment is justified, if Sony aren't going to start making better products they may well be better off moving out of the electronics business and selling that portion of their company to someone else that will actually care about the quality of items coming out of it, as opposed to the name and look of them only. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+11I still have a 36" KV-36FS13 Trinitron SDTV. The picture quality still looks good to me.
- TheBigShovel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9disconinueing this thread
- soapycub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I still got my 21" SGI GDM-5411 Trinitron FD and I'll be damned if I'm going to replace lest it die on me.
*hugs monitor* - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Okay, so now when is Sony itself going to discontinue?
- deepmenace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8/checks archives for any other old negative sony news in a desperate attempt to get diggs/
b u r i e d . - BrokenBeta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So, is it inaccurate or lame? Make your mind up!
- fivestarsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They actually have some nice monitors :( I'm using a flatscreen right now, and I really like it.
- nahsrocketeer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Go ahead and question/mock the decision, but according to this survey the American consumer apparently believes that Sony can do no wrong:
http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/10267 - icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i think the LCD panels are made by Samsung and LG....
- CaseyUCF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yup I still am on a 21" Trinitron CRT and the color, crispness and picture quality is amazing. It makes LCD's look like *****.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Back when Sony could make a premium monitor line that was worth the extra price, it was a good business model.
But now LCD monitors are a commodity item with less and less consumer differentiation in quality every year from low end to high.
No money in that. - Nemic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Start taking care of your equipment... Never had a problem with a Sony product.
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Oh no not the Sony monitors :-P
Pffft Sony. - docjeff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6buried for inaccuracy. very lame.
- DeepFreezed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sony is done. this company will be no more in 5 years. they don't have any business thats is making profit.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow what ***** luck you have!
- GhostFaced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess LCD's are a "novelty" like they claim the Wii is supposed to be.
Little profit they say? A little profit is better than no profit since they are supposedly selling the PS3 at a loss. - blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"good thing sony isn't the only company who uses the trinitron tech.. viewsonic and others have sold trinitron monitors for years if u wanted a crt"
Viewsonic and others have sold aperture grille monitors for years. They have not sold Trinitron monitors for years. Mitsubishi's variant is called "Diamondtron," for instance. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This makes some sense. It's a cutthroat market, it's very difficult to make money in the computer monitor market right now. And there isn't any kind of innovation on the horizon that will change that. It'll be LCD displays for the next 5 years, and even the low-cost brands have jumped into the LCD market with both feet.
So this looks like a pretty good move. - ChrisSlagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have one of those beastly 50 pound Sony Trinitron monitors that take up 50% of my desk space. I guess no one will have the chance to enjoy it like I do. [/sarcasm]
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In other news... the alphabet has disconinued the letter T
: ) - Doomhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What do you mean? They're taking in money hand-over-fist with the PS3... Oh wait, no they're not. ;)
- Hensworth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Disconinues? What is that? I never heard of that word before, someone fill me in.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh well! So long and thanks for all the fish... i mean, good riddance, is what I meant to say
- bmwboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dunno, many CRTs from Sony we're high-quality, but I got a few bad ones, and by bad I mean B-A-D, low resolution, bad colour, etc.
- Silverjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sad story seen from a designer's point of view. However, I used to work at a place where we fixed most brands of monitors. Some of the Sony LCS models kept coming in, so in that respect I don't think its that bad. (Some things might have improved since then....)
I didn't know this until now, but the story is still from October, which is almost the same as the Stone Age on digg.com..... So it's a good post, since I didn't know it, but a bad post since the story is old! - BHRecon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good thing sony isn't the only company who uses the trinitron tech.. viewsonic and others have sold trinitron monitors for years if u wanted a crt
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1okay....must say something...really?
- Kragnerac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will it blend?
- SocketNine3Nine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its to make up for blu-ray trust me... (joking)
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The most valuable thing that Sony owns is their name.
However, the problem that Sony has is that those people that were surveyed aren't going to be buying Sony's products on a regular basis. People like us, on the other hand are. Or are not, which is Sony's problem in a nutshell. -
