- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20There's no way in hell a Newton can handle all the possible diggers -- and there it goes.

- pcheaven2k, on 10/12/2007, -16/+34I wonder if I had a microcomputer (web server) surgically implanted in my penis and submitted it to digg what would happen faster:
1.) It making the front page, or
2.) Me getting the biggest boner of my life from all you pervs hitting it. - sixlocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Amazing ____ photos.

Back in 1998-199 I, and then eventually a few other developers, wrote NPDS, which is the web service running on these ancient gems of hardware engineering. It's not entirely obvious, but much of the 'site' you're seeing is dynamically generated. In fact, the content can be edited (by hand, literally) in real time right in the Newton's Notepad.

We need to get Apple to bring back the Newton. It's the one pioneering IT field they launched that they haven't stuck to. I know Steve Jobs killed the newton as it was John Sculley's idea - but it was a good one and we're all using PDA's and smartphones now.
Newton 2.0 - yeah baby, bring back the beastie. - ortel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3leethal:

You spent a week or so (probably more) making your unbelievably downscaled item to work the way nobody thought was possible. This is the case with this little cute portable computer. The cute little portable computer, tough, wasn't meant for handling a lot of requests - I guess the hoster esimated 50 visitors per day max.
So, someone digg it. It becomes popular. It's starting to get more and more hits, and more and more load. The poor thing can't stand it. Hell, even large corprorate servers can get to much if they are posted on digg and suddenly becoming more trafficed than whan it was presumed to be. Everyone have heard this story by now, and everyone's clicking the link. A server is usually a rack unit with 2ghz CPU and 4 GB RAM - not an aged (but very cute) portable machine. It's buried! This is what's called the digg effect, or slashdoting if you're one of those.
Some times I wish I could post my girlfriend on digg to shut her up. -
