- Bobombom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Even so, they did an exceptional job in fitting all those components into such a small device.
Many companies will follow in thier footsteps. - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I can't honestly think of any practical use for this...
Playing Media? Sure, but there's crap like Video iPods for that...
Typing Stuff? Just pull out a laptop and keep yourself from looking like an ass... - wolvyne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6wonder how well it games :P The solitaire fps but be crazy!
- spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And this while their $200 phones have 3 megapixels already.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Another worthless device with no real keyboard. PDAs are dying (despite the gross design ineptitude that has stopped cell phones from replacing their simple functions), so here comes (essentially) a giant one? And it's no smaller than the XNote. This is where things should be going; why bother with anything else:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/17/lg-goes-crazy-small-with-new-a1-and-c1-xnotes - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5called the Q2? i'm sure motorola is going to have something to say about that..
- spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They finally decided it's impractical without a keyboard, to they added a tiny one. Useless.
Just make one like OQO did - ninjathis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3reminds me of a game gear
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It looks a lot like a Pepper Pad 3.
- PugFish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ctrl Alt Delete isn't just for task manager anymore, it takes you to a screen for locking windows, logging off, switching users, etc
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most Laptops I have seen with built in webcams are 1.3mp.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a good video of the Q1P running vista:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXi_GiSG_jc&NR - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4UMPCs are really a lousy form factor/market targetting. For something that's too large to fit in a pocket, but too small to use for productivity, the only market I can see is a $200-300 device meant to replace the home landline telephone, making VoIP and videoconferencing calls, and serving up cooking recipes in the kitchen. It would be optionally wall-mounted or countertop dockable, and be meant for mostly stationary use in the household. Trying to market this for portable computing use is going to be a failure, as it's just an impractical form factor. You can't put it in a pocket, you feel silly carrying a purse-sized carrying case for one, and there isn't enough screen real estate for any serious productivity. Until we see these things get significantly cheaper, and focus on communication and casual home uses, UMPCs are nothing but hype.
- mijunkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who wants Vista? Ugh. Maybe I'll consider one if there's a good development community for putting linux on it...
- gotkarma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5all that fuss and a 1.3M camera?
Lame! - firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2sure, until apple releases a iTablet, then the iFanboys will circle-jerk about how nice it is to have something between a iPhone and a laptop in size.
- Solarux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My doctor's office uses UMPCs. The mechanics at my local Porsche dealership use rugged UMPCs. I have one I use for travel that allows me to slip the device into my carry-on instead of carrying a second case and/or laptop bag. Pit bosses at a few casinos in Vegas use them for player ratings/comps/etc. I bought my IT managers some for in office use so they can be connected while anywhere on property without having to carry a laptop.
UMPCs are certainly not hype...unless of course you are going by how many your friends have as a novel gadget for surfing the web at home, then yea I can agree. - bbqplate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well if you make money on the web and need to be connected online 24/7 i think the q1 is the best option out there. i plan on purchasing one this summer so i can check email/ update my databases/ and surf the web while being mobile(sitting at work or following my wife and family around) and at work and not look so suspicious.
- hockeysmurf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good summary, you just talked me out of it.
- cklol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You have to be kidding me.. splitting a little push button QWERTY keyboard on to both sides of it, and you use your thumbs to type? WTF?! Someone needs to perfect holographic keyboards.. miniscule buttons are really getting old.
- amdinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dedicated Control-Alt-Delete button? Thank god I use Linux.
- zohaib786, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Nah Not From mobiles.co.uk, If you want to buy the latest & cheapest mobile phones, you want to check out www.phones-express.com, they have the cheapest deals available in the UK, - http://www.phones-express.com
- kahrayzee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That, or wait for Apple to do it better. Vista took a dump all over my desktop system, I'm not sure how 'productive' it would feel on a single core 1-1.5Ghz system :P
- EzarKun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Manufacturer should make a custom theme with Vista, whats the big dealio?!
It will sure as hell make it more unique, jsut use the Windows kernel and take advantae of the GUI system. A cusotm theme pack from each manufacturer, Hp,Dell, Acer, would be great:D - Johny900, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wow, cant wait to buy it!
Johnny - Mobile Phones
http://www.mobiles.co.uk - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Solarux: I meant the only MASS market use for this form factor. You'll see phones taking more and more of the tasks you would need one of these things for, and people won't mind them because they can just stick it in their pocket. Your managers would probably prefer a nice smart phone that can be carried around easily, rather than lugging that awkwardly-sized device. An ultra-compact laptop would be just as good for you and your carry-on-stuffing ways, and at least the screen would be protected by the clamshell design, not to mention the benefit of a full-sized keyboard. I'm not saying that tablets in general won't find mass markets, but I think the sweet spot for those is more around the size of a notepad of 8.5x11" paper, so you can at least use them for serious productivity. As a portable general-use computing platform, however, UMPCs are just not going to make it. They'll be stuck in their niches, and their only redeeming quality is that they're driving down the costs of components that will allow more focused devices to succeed.
- emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3does the oqo totally suck or is it not an umpc?
- FLHealth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Apple will always try and do it better!

- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Looks *****, if you ask me (and running Vista? *gags*)... the quest is still out for a truly portable device, that is somewhere between a phone and a laptop... If you ask me, tho, Nokia N770 and N800 are the closest yet.
the girl is pretty hot tho - bstock, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3I think I'll stick to my N800. Not quite as powerful as this thing, but as least it fits in my pocket. Plus it runs linux.. why would Samsung put Vista on this?
- Absinthminded64, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5Agreed! They lost me at "Vista."
- musbou, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3At last, a UMPC that looks like it's going to suck more.
I really believe that Samsung is going about it the wrong way.
