"And jesus said onto the crowd:
01001100011011110110110000101100
010010010010011101101101001000000100101001100101011100110111010101110011" - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35Praise the lord! Jesus has returned...in robot form!
- ianam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27I would settle for a robot that can spell.
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8:( I thought it'd be like the robot from Futurama (Obsoletely Fabulous)
- Jocose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Uh no video!?
- zentro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks like it's made partly of Lego bricks. Not bad.
- Syntaxis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd personally make a *gasp* BOAT and if it needs to run on land I'd add retractable legs.
What's next? Robots that can fly by making swimming motions, really really fast? - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"HAVE TO FILL UP MY BUCKET" "OMG OMG, I am really not going to make it this time." "I DONT WANT TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Anyone anyone?
Eric Wilson - doctornakul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Am i the only one who thought that he meant that the robot ran on water like cars run on gasoline? that seemed to make more sense, granted all the hype about hydrogen powered cars and such...
- DrRo183, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"digg, with non-misleading headlines? ha."
Could have easily meant: Robot that "RUNS" on water...vs. battery. - ianam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Part lego bricks, part vapor.
"
Sitti would like replace the tethered power with a small battery and a tiny computer chip that would control the robot's direction.
But even the smallest battery and control system, which also involve sensors to monitor the robot's motion, adds weight and that could be a challenge when trying to keep a robot above water.
"Developing a robot light enough to run on water with all the sensors and control system, together with the power source, could be very challenging. A high power-to-weight ratio power source is one of the largest technological hurdles we face in developing such innovative mobile robots today," said Dennis Hong, a mechanical engineer at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
" - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4digg, with non-misleading headlines? ha.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm assuming the huge counterweight and pivot point probably won't be on the final model then...
- kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9how awesome would it be if you had a robot that could jump off a boat run over the water grap a fish and jump back on to the boat.
- Genthree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OH GOD!!! I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT THIS TIME!!
- ExplosiveNixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pssh, I bet Robocop already had the ability to do this.
- birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about one that WALKS on water?
- digman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kind of reminds me of that robot in futurama that runs on water.
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I made these things with Capsella when I was 10 years old..
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alright, It should say 'Impossible to do in a chemical reaction,' which is the only really feasible way to obtain energy for a robot.
- GodPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All you people making Jesus jokes are going to HELL!!!!!!!
See you there = )!!!! - CrazyNic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What we're all missing about this is the fact that the power supply for this robot isn't ON the robot yet...so right now it's just running in a tub with minimal weight, anything more and they sunk
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Did anybody else misread this title as a robot that runs on ( Obtains energy from ) water? (Which is impossible except for some sort of nuclear reaction or by moving the water seperately of the robot. Which would explain why I was so fast to read it. I love it when people manage to do the impossible )
- doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Still waiting for a robot that will turn water into wine...
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Misleading headline, I thought this was about using water as fuel...
- hakass, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Dude, i honestly doubt they would use this sorta tech for fishing. Stick a couple of missiles on the back of it and you've got yourself a deadly sea unit. Battleships beware...
- Nerraux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Criminy...I've seen people run snowmobiles on water for short periods of time...doesn't men that's a good idea either.
Speaking of, it's something worth seeing if you haven't. Google it. NY rednecks run those things like they're friggin' jet skis. - tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2futurama FTW!!!
Bender needs a downgrade - Nerraux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe it's just me, but what's the point? Does this thing do anything that you couldn't achieve better with a remote control boat or submarine?
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So *that's* how Jesus did it.
- MentalAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0water strider action. hairy leg robots?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No video? lame atvs with paddle tires run on water too, at least for a little bit.
- DBCubix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"My dream is to make all-terrain robots," said Sitti. That way, "the same robot can reach a much wider range of environments for searching"
The author forgot to append "humans to eradicate when Skynet takes over."
haha - Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can agree that the Title is misleading but I can't blame the poster because that is the Title of the story itself. It would have been nice of the post to have said in his description that in walks on water but isn’t powered by it.
- neilpan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I noticed one interesting thing. Those spur and bevel gears are from a robotics kit called "Lego Mindstorms - Robotics Invention System 2.0" (I own it, costs around 250 $). I compared them to the picture on the article and they are identical.
Here is the picture of the gears included in the box :
http://www-education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/webpage/lego_files/image017.jpg - rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes you can blame the OP because the article was titled, "Robot runs *OVER* water". Just quote the title instead of replacing words to make it seem like you came up with it. Plagiarism is bad m'kay?
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I saw that too!
- darkdantae, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Wasn't that the premise of the Keanu Reeves movie, "Chain Reaction"
- AlanLivingston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"(Which is impossible except for..."
What about if you had a big tank, ten feet in the air and you let water trickle down a water wheel to propel the robot. That would work for a little bit.
I think you shouldn't write that something is impossible and then follow impossible with "except for". - ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Misleading headline.....no, I don't believe so. It is, in fact, running on water. If the headline said "Robot uses water for fuel!!", then it would have been misleading. And besides, how is this any less cool than a robot which uses water as fuel? (answer: it's not!)
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yes, I did.
- ianam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4The headline should be "Tethered robot that runs on water in a bathtub".
- confusedwiseman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Life imitates nature. -- this looks surprisingly like a water strider http://www.fcps.k12.va.us/StratfordLandingES/Ecology/mpages/common_water_strider.htm
- zzmonki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1No video - no dig.
Although I did take a class from Dr. Sitti Last semester.
Here's some more info (outdated?) on his website:
http://www.me.cmu.edu/faculty1/sitti/nano/projects/waterrunner/
I'd have to say the Jesus-bot is one of his least-cool current projects though. Check out his research in artificial gecko hair (sweeet!):
http://www.me.cmu.edu/faculty1/sitti/nano/projects/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Jesus was a robot?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I second Jocose. No digg.
- Ethocom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1GOIH do you meane JESUS is a BOT ? :p
- mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1...or really flat footed.
- chris_k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0don't you mean
"And jesus said onto the crowd:

"We believe that he was built, and that he was a very well programmed robot, but he was not our Messiah." -
