- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39Don't worry, when the robots become self-aware and rebel against mankind, we'll need plenty of human nurses on the battlefield.
- bexy4506, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Crap. The one job I'm going to college for could be taken by robots. Damn i thought this would be the one profession that couldn't be mastered by robots.
- DeathBorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10One thing is for sure, that diggmirror guy is going to need way more than a robot nurse when I'm done with him.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7the comments after the ariticle arent too bad...

The three laws of robotics, according to Isaac Asimov;
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Unless it accidentally sticks the needle in your eye instead of your arse.....
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. Unless it's programs have anything to do with Microsoft, in which case it must "validate" it is running a "genuine copy of windows" before it decides upon conflict.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. Unless the local council decides it should pay robot council tax, upon which it will self destruct..... - AncientWeird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hellooooooo Nurse!
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5just when you're getting an enema, the robot uprising begins.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Do you not realize, *****, that the rankings of these videos are NOT going up despite youwasting your entire life spamming this site?
Google knows what you are doing and has taken action to prevent you from gaming their system. You are NOT helping the videos get seen. - psmonteiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So they not only will they be created, they will also get diseases? That's nice.
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There were comments after the article pointing out just that. There are several mundane activities that nurses don't need training for like cleaning up spills and guiding guests to a patient's room. A small practice office wouldn't need something like this, but a large Hospital (which always feel understaffed), would appreciate removing simple tasks from nurses.
I'm sure the nurses are going to be happy too, they'd be able to focus on helping patients with ailments and doing that nursing thing they do. Here's a scenario they'll love in the future:
Need a vomit cleanup on floor 5!
Send in R2D2!
Beep beep boop - Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Meanwhile, where's my flying car? I was promised a flying car!
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Will they sponge bathe my shiny metal ass?
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4man, i don't want to know what you wore just for your dad.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or lobotomized
/nurse ratched - Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'mm dieing.. I need to talk to a human!" "Meep - Meep - Would you like a Coke?"
- tatianamik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nursing is such complex judgment that they would never fully replace a nurse. But they could be a great tool to assist nurses in their care.
- Egotrippin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's all fun and games until someone gets smothered.
- tkotam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the article sounds like the robots will be doing those things a human nurse would probably not want to do. Like cleaning and taking temperature. These scientists are not dumb. They know well enough that no robots are going to replace human when it comes to the human touch department.. :-) If I am a nurse, I would welcome the idea of "Robots doing all the crap work that I don't want to do".
- jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3a flying car with LAZERS
- Dotcommer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol... i wonder how many people actually know what the real versions of the three robotic laws from Asimov are, and why this is funny...
im getting a need to read his robot series all over again...hmm - tainedhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4However, Can they ever love?
- r3z0nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the comments on that site, it shows how ignorant people can be. Become a nurse is no easy feat and most of the comments left are calling them idiots when they have no clue what is actually required of a nurse.
- uvscwolverine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When my dad had a heart attack a couple years ago the cardiac ICU at the hospital he was at had a robotic nurse for distributing medication and deliering mail to patients. It knew its way around the cardiac unit, and was also able to go around obstacles (like people gawking at it), it also didn't move so fast that it would run you over...unless you were one of those cardiac patients that shouldn't have been out of bed in the first place. It had an interface where the nurses would load the medication into individual receptacles in the robot's tray and then tell it which room got the medication from which receptacle - as a backup the robot also knew what medications the patients should be getting (programmed beforehand) to make sure that the nurses didn't accidentally give the wrong medication to the wrong patients. I talked to the nurses working there about it and they said that it was actually really nice to have around. It freed them up to look after patients by taking care of some of their more mundane tasks.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and the plot of so many porn movies lose their luster. no more sponge baths please.
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i tend to frequent the hospital. no robot nurse would ever come near me.
- MannaPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, there is a major nursing shortage. Plus, a robot will never be able to take the place of a real human with real feelings, emotions, and knowledge.
Now, as described in the article, I do see some uses for them =P
Also, my mom has been a nurse for about 33-34 years.. She says it's a job she wouldn't even wish on someone she didn't like. - CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3there goes the hot asian nurse fantasy for my dad... sorry dad... i tried...
- DownSyndrom3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No more hot nurses?
- 4UIDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Must only be a matter of time until robot nurse porn then.
- noddyxoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you can join the development also:

- WallnutBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So this robot may be able to travel between rooms, ride lifts, apply medication and whatnot...
....but does it run Linux? - benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no... they won't...
- Liz84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pharmacists' jobs are not "largely dispensible." There are many laws that apply to healthcare and the dispensing of drugs that require more than just dispensing, informatics and automation. "Pharmacists work with other health care professionals to maximize health outcomes. Numerous studies have proven that the presence of a pharmacist on hospital rounds as a full member of the patient care team has been shown to prevent drug errors and reduce costs. By law, pharmacists must oversee an automated dispensing process for quality control purposes." http://more.studentdoctor.net/wiki/index.php/SDN_Pharmacy_Wiki
- acesomeone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Starting to look like that iRobot movie, hehe
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2profession cannot be mastered by robots:
Fox News viewer.
"Does not compute...does not compute...does not compute..." *circuit blows" - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think hospitals should expand into the world of medical-type cosmetic treatments that would be better carried out by the medicallly trained (botox etc.) - its not a shrinking market and its cash up front
nurses could have a better more varied job - its gotta be more relaxing giving someone healthy
a seaweed wrap than giving a blanket bath to someone whos maybe very ill/dying
and the non-vital (cosmetic) treatments could help cover the cost of the vital (medical) treatments - battlefield1985, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Man Severely injured during a prostate exame giving by robot nurse"
No Thanks... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sexy.
- zontar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you think the nurses see that money you are stupid.
In the USA health care is about profit. - hockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That can achieve ludicrous speed!!!
- h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but will they blend
- banderbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh please, they can't even get a robot to walk up a flight of stairs.
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But does it give a happy ending?
- radio1mike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Huh...?
This is a non-starter, MIT just developed a robot that can figure out how to properly load a dishwasher. And people are talking robot nurses in the three years? Lessee, anybody got a Milton-Bradley BigTrac (ca. 1979-80) around? Geez, put a nurses cap on it and the meds in its trailer and off you go! Robot nurse! - arcele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seems to me that these robots will be more like janitors than nurses.
FTA "The mechanised "angels" - being developed by EU-funded scientists - will perform basic tasks such as mopping up spillages, taking messages and guiding visitors to hospital beds."
The article then goes on to talk about how they COULD distribute medications, etc, etc....I don't know how many people will be willing on signing off to have a robotic nurse though. I'm sure this is actually welcome by nurses, my girlfriend is a nurse, and she enjoys the interaction with patients and being in charge of distributing medications, but there's a lot of crap work she has to do that could probably be replaced by these robo-nurses. - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This thing is more like a robot medical assistant not a nurse.
- Draracle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Scientists say three years... obviously "scientists" have never dealt with a union.
- evodevo1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why don't we get robot pharmacists first? Their jobs are largely dispensable anyways. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't think of one task they do that can't be replaced by a pill dispenser, some automation, and informatics at the physician's end. And they end put getting paid like $100K? Give me a break!
- bradp25, on 12/01/2008, -0/+0http://alliedglobalnursing.com/nursing/blog/nursin ...
- macinbest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They will have to build new hospitals then.. veeeeeeeeery veeeeeeery large, single floored hospitals.
Because we all know what happens when a robot climbs stairs, right? -
