- bigdoug2005, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Nice, you must be a super hax0r or something...
- 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I misread and thought it was a 8000 series
I apologize...
THEY ARE NOT DX10 CARDS - jeebus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is *****. Screw you and your ***** article, spread out over 13 pages. Just another sad attempt to get digg users to look at your ***** ad filled website.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Go with NVIDIA if you plan to use the video card under Linux.
- stevenstclair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Im pretty sure the first ever DX10 cards are nvidia's new 8000 series.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Performance gain is really noticeable. Its also really easy to flash your card, download the Dolf Autoflashing CD, if you have the X850Pro AGP heres the link:
http://savefile.com/projects/738578
Also this forum thread has all info (X850 PCI-X , X800GTO , etc etc):
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=8060
Note: Let me make it clear, it can be done on AGP and PCI-X as long as the card has the correct fuses. See thread on how to detect it.
You have a 0% chance of killing the card, unless you put one of the XT PE bios on which has a lot higher clock speed. But I bought an aftermarket cooler and it fixed that. - Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"so ATI won"
Won what? They arn't even in the same price range.
X1950pro $230
7900GS $180 - MrPig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6...or want a well made GPU...
- siodine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@mtnxfreeride
Unless you're buying your video card for 3DMark it's a completely useless test. Most people want to know how well a video card will perform in their favorite game, or an extremely stressful next-generation game like Oblivion. - vp0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was lucky and managed to get a Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO2 a year back. it's a mid range card that had 12 active pipelines and 4 turned off via the bios. It had the R480 core and the bios easily flashed with a simple utility some people made to open up the 4 extra pipes, from 12 to 16. With some overclocking of the core and the memory, i ended up with an X850 XT PE as well. Windows sees it as that now. This card was all over overclocking forums a year back.
I see no need to go beyond the X850 for the time being. All games run fine, including things like Morrowind: Oblivion on my modest system. Maybe in 3 more years i'll consider an upgrade.
I think a video card should have the same lifespan as a game console. 4 to 5 years. - goat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2then tell that to 0siris
- gaanagaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am still staying with nvidia :)
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3These are not DX10 cards.....And the 7900gs the lowest card on the 7 series,And the 1950 pro is alot higher model than the 7900gs,I would say a 7900gt/gtx would be a better comparison.
- Kahlzarg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Under the hood 3D Mark doesn't behave like a game at all, its a prepackaged rolling demo, unlike a game that access dynamically loaded 2D & 3D packages as they are needed. I have also recently tripled my system ram which gave no increase in 3D Mark but game me 20% better fps in actual games. If you want to test how a game performs, use a game. Though you are correct that games are optomised for certain cards that why you use a range of games over a range of game engines.
- SpaceCow!, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You mean lowest in the 7900 series.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Games always seemed like bias tests to me.. some are made specially for Nvidia cards.. some for ATI...
3D mark and similar programs are for the win I think.. so ATI won - fivestarsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can't figure out how to unlock the 16 pipes on mine. Too scared. Is the performance gain very noticeable?
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, in summary, the Gigabyte 7900GT is a little slower at stock in shader heavy games (e.g., Company of Heroes) when compared to the X1950Pro, but can beat the slightly more expensive X1950Pro when overclocked, and can overclock to a higher speed than the X1950Pro.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well how do you like it?
- Assassinator23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1K the way i see it, IF you can MAX OUT (meaning turn on all features) a game, for instance F.E.A.R, Oblivion, BF 2, or any game thats a hog on a video card in a good system, THEN its a good card. Yeah any game can play good on low settings, but crank it up on a card, you can see a change in framerate.
- shakyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They couldn't pony up the $5 for the all copper zalman?
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ilyag
Is it always worth $400 more, just for that extra pass of anti-aliasing? or running 1600x1200 instead of 1280x1024? Yes, newer cards do offer some more features, but its not always worth the money. Trailers and screenshots are also somewhat of a grey area, trailers are often rendered not at the 30fps that they are shown at, as for screenshots, you have no idea what sort of framerate it is running at to obtain that. - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Let's get this straight DX10 is a hardware change. Thus far the only card on the market that is purely DX10 capable on the hardware level is the Nvidia 8800 series. Ati (or AMD now, i dunno) has yet to release one.
- Equate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+07900gtx > x1950pro > 7900gt > 7900gs.
All at stock. - clippydiper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well written article.
- Assassinator23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AND if you can still get silky smooth rates, THEN ITS A GOOD CARD!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Tell that to my friend. He got really annoyed at me when I tried to cdisprove to him the Xbox 360's GPU cannot support DX10, since he thought it did. Some people can get so aggressive! I bet he is reading this right now.

I am getting this biootch on friday - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"All games run fine..."
At what resolution, framerate, and with which graphical settings turned on? That's the key, you know. It's not about whether the thing is capable of running the software without choking on it. It's about whether or not you can get all the graphics you paid for to appear on your screen at home, as compared to what you saw in the screenshots and in-game trailers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+12to bad they are'nt DX10 compliant
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2yeah I just bought one of the 8800 GTX's because I was sure that it was one of the only DX10 cards
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2really??? they are DX10??? (seriously)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7what the *****? I never bragged about my skills, its super easy to flash something...
- goat2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4oh the 7900 is dx10 compliant eh

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+3Meh. my X850 Pro with an after market cooler modded to an X850 XT PE with 16 pipelines is good enough for me.
