- steger, on 11/13/2008, -1/+26I wouldn't know where to begin with this thing. It's like Voltron but in camera fashion.
- louse101, on 11/13/2008, -1/+25281 megapixels? That'll be the ultra-porn Farnsworth was talking about in Futurama then.
- Shootfast, on 11/14/2008, -0/+22Red files come with QT wrapper scripts that regenerate lower resolutions either on the fly, or to new files. The compression is very impressive
- brokentone, on 11/14/2008, -0/+21If asking honest questions is allowed here. . . I find myself asking how a random guy from a sunglasses company blew so many established multinational companies out of the water with this.
- joshpar, on 11/14/2008, -2/+20This is shot on a RED:

I'll be curious to find out the cost of the fixed-lens Scarlet, especially considering that the LCD appears to be available as an extra accessory only. But how the hell do you edit 28k footage? Not that I'll have to deal with that little problem... I cannot wait.
- richid, on 11/13/2008, -1/+14Looks like a weapon more than a camera.
- BossKey, on 11/14/2008, -0/+12>But how the hell do you edit 28k footage?
Well, when you're not playing Crysis... - mydriasis, on 11/14/2008, -0/+11I hate you ;)
- srg13, on 11/13/2008, -2/+11After closely following this company since everyone was saying they were a scam, it's that they're finally brought out a camera system I'll can afford to buy! The DSMC system is really a quite amazing evolution of the original RED ONE camera.
- srg13, on 11/14/2008, -1/+8Yeah right... So what do you call Steven Soderberg then - what's he on, his third all RED feature film now? And then there's Peter Jackson, who shot a short very early on, and now there are some RED shots in his latest feature...
Then there's all these: http://www.imdb.com/SearchTechnical?for=red+one - DiggUmFrog, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7That is sick looking. Why cant all cameras look like that!?
- slickfire, on 11/14/2008, -1/+8optics company son... optics company
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6WTF?
- YoGramMamma, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6Now that I'm finished drooling.... i've gotta start saving my pennies.
For anyone above asking what was so special about this... to put it short... RED is now starting to harness the power of large scale film cameras in much smaller and way more affordable offerings. The RED ONE has been out for a while and its turned many heads already, but when you merge that power with an even more capable image sensor and the ability to shoot stills... you've got a game changer.
FYI... here is an example of footage shot on red from a friend of mine.
http://www.vimeo.com/1908690
while a great deal better than YouTube, Vimeo still doesn't begin to really show off all that a RED camera can do. And even though the above video is just a simple clip it shows of the insanely good image quality that those cameras can do. - ChayD, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5This camera is jaw-droppingly incredible (261 megapixels...I'll say that again: two-hundred-and-sixty-f**kin'-one!! on a 6x12cm sensor!!) and even in its most expensive configuration, it's pretty much still cheaper than a top-end 35mm movie camera.
- 2Pharcyded, on 11/14/2008, -1/+6the price is still PRETTY good?
i dont want to come off as a douche but do you realize that the quality and richness this company is offering is less than 10% of how much it costs to simply rent a panavision camera. not too mention you get to shoot as much footage as you need witout worrying about wasting film. and on top of all that, the current hd digital cameras cost are still around $70 grand (new of course) and their processing chip doesnt even allow for depth shots...
however, it is becoming easier and easier to jerry rig up some pretty decent sets with a better processing chip for a regular digital camera using a higher quality camera lens.
im just saying haha - ajmanx, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5So, how many times can I digg this?
- arapro, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4Well Great ! Now all we need to wait is for intel to come up with a processor than can actually handle all this data. I work in post with the Red One, and its a hungry beast ! And because its digital, people think they can shoot millions of hours and see everything instantly. Really this camera (s) is way ahead of the actual processing power this days.
But that does not mean I dont love it ! - bushisthedevil, on 11/14/2008, -1/+5My RED ONE will be getting a couple new friends soon.
- pell, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4Redcode
- AdibT, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4nothing is cooler than digital 617 in the photography field.
This seems to be a revolutionary product not just for digital cine. Up till now digital could not touch "large format" film . even 4''x5'' kills digital 645 at a fraction of the cost. 617 will revolutionize the large format field. i didn't think large format film would be obsoleted this soon. - akoostik, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4If you saw "Jumper", I believe most of that was shot on Red.
- dougbot, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4"the diaper," as if you've only got one and just reuse it over and over for these situations
- MtheoryX, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4I think its a camera.
- MyTakes, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3So it's like the most amazing camera equipment ever built then..?
- obimk1, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Does it come with smile recognition?
- akoostik, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4He realized that people look like douchebags while wearing Oakleys... so he hired a bunch of computer engineers to come up with a video codec that will compress the ***** out of video in a respectible fashion.
- zambuka, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Sweeet. Want!
However, if your primary use is for still photography then you are better off spending your money on a good DSLR, for the same price as just the 6k "brain" you can get a nice 6 Megapixel DSLR with 2 or 3 good lenses.
For a multi purpose tool and for high def video it is certainly a nice kit. - dharasick, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4drools...
- temsi, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Please compare apples with apples.
The 6K Scarlet is NOT 6MP, it's 24MP, it's 6000x4000 pixels.
The closest competitor would be the 21.1MP Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, which retails for about $8,000 plus accessories and lenses, and cannot do RAW video.
Above those specs, you're into Hasselblad territory, which is up to 50MP and over $40,000, and cannot do RAW video either.
Also, none of the competition is upgradable, and none of the competition has interchangeable lens-mounts.
Your lens arsenal can include Nikon, Canon, PL-Mount and more.
Tell me what other still camera can offer anything like that. - SpongeBad, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Wow. Honestly. Just wow.
- Zippo, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3And I bet someone will buy one of these things... to shoot videos they're just going to put up on YouTube.
- grexeo, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4Once this baby hits, motion film is dead once and for all.
- florin, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4It's not ridiculous, it's just slightly larger than IMAX. Somebody had to do it eventually.
It's not nonsensical, "film" framerate is 24 fps.
You're used to consumer-level stuff. This is professional gear. - kinerry, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3I have no idea what any of this means
- benbutterworth, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Sweeeeeet!
- boardtrick, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2RED cameras are a rare breed of modular cameras...meaning you buy the image sensors, body, handles, lens, etc, separately...they make high-end equipment with incredible resolution (think about 1080p HD, but much more)...this big announcement reveals their step into the prosumer market with "affordable" products AND the ability for their sensors to shoot full motion hi-res video as well as digital still images on-par with DSLR cameras, hope that helps
- badgrenola, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2There's a really nice interview with Ted Schilowitz now up at FXGuide. The full version is in the Red Centre podcast.
Interview : http://www.fxguide.com/article507.html
Red Centre : http://www.fxguide.com/redcentre - florin, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2"consumer" market? not really. Prosumer and up.
- ChayD, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2I think you'd probably need a monitor the size of a football field to get a good idea of the resolution :)
- srg13, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Jumper had some RED stuff, mostly for VFX, IIRC. Guerilla, The Argentine, Game, The Informatnt, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt and Knowing are all shot all-red though.
- badgrenola, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2The original Scarlet was basically the same as the price-TBD fixed-lens Scarlet that was unveiled this morning. That was enough for alot of people, and hopefully will still come in not too far from the $3k mark with the LCD attachment. I think if you're still looking for a base-system, and don't get lured towards the Epic end of the spectrum, for what you get the price is still pretty good.
That being said, hooray for innovation! - griz, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2a 28K system hitting 25fps is expected in 2010
At that size, each frame is over a gigabyte. How do you transfer 25Gigabytes/second?
And how do you store it? You would fill a terabyte in 40 seconds.
Surely there isn't processing power to compress this on the fly. - DChapgier, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2i think i'm gonna be like steven spielberg and stick with film.
- Kleep, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2what is this? can someone explain to a non-video fiend?
- RoroCo, on 11/13/2008, -4/+6Can I afford this? No. Can most people afford this? No. That being said, I love the fact that Red is bringing the modular concept to the consumer imaging market. It makes too much sense for other companies to pass this off as a gimmick. Hopefully the stoic SLR market will take note and get its butt off the ground and start innovating.
Kudos Red. - florin, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Right. The focus of the current line of cameras is video, with still images as a secondary thing.
I believe RED was talking about an announcement that they will do later on, regarding a camera that's focused primarily on still images, with video secondary. - usefultheory, on 11/13/2008, -6/+8...Now turning to prostitution to afford this awesomeness.
