- Demq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17This laptop has more features than my $700 laptop :/
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I actually want one. I hope they eventually sell these to everyone and maybe cut the prices that the third world countries have to pay using profits from us.
- alamko1999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13One million order means one million more linux zealots. Our empire is getting bigger!!!
- RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Put me down for 5.They look cool can't wait till they start selling.
- tchiseen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I got a chance to see and play with one of these at linux.conf.au this year, and it was pretty cool. The ones I saw didn't have the human charger, but they did have their little ad-hoc networking going, that was cool. talk about bare bones though, there's really nothing to these systems. I suppose you'd have to install another OS and use a USB mouse and keyboard, but I can see that. I would buy one as well. They're pretty decent machines, and what a great geek culture item.

I heard somewhere that they'd sell them in developed countries for 2 or 3 times more, then supply one or two to the 3rd world market at no cost for every "overpriced" one sold. I'm sure people here would be willing to pay $200-$300 for one of these, while making a donation to needy kids in another country.
That might have changed though, or it's possible that I'm completely making that up. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I didn't realize it had swivel for the monitor. That's pretty awesome. Dugg.

You can't buy one and if you try it will get "killed" - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Probably the same reason that New Orleans still looks like a bomb hit it.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm pretty sure you aren't going to find any other OS's currently available for this thing...
It's not like your going to be able to fire up xp/vsta/osx.
Maybe a different version of linux...but im sure it would be easier to just rewrite the current OS to give it more functionality - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They've (the OLPC organizers) said they'd be happy to sell these to US school districts. You'd have to get it through the state board of education level, though, to get high enough quantities (million minimum order). The trouble is that the XO isn't what a computer "looks like" to someone who's seen one (in the US). You give some kid (ages 14 and up, btw, not talking elementary aged kids here) here one of those and I promise the first thing they'll think is "WTF is this? Where's my Dell?". WE (geeks) know it's a cool deal, but if your not in the know it's a Fischer Price computer.
I'd like to see several states get together (let's start with say Cali, NY, and Texas who have gobs and gobs of students) order a few million of these, but in iPod white and without the "ears" (that is, the antennas). Spend a few bucks getting the software customized a bit for US students needs (for example, not sure what the 'net access on these is like, but my understanding is they were built for places where there's limited connectivity so it's based around ad-hoc peer to peer networks... here, there's internet gateway everywhere, so it should be built around that idea, etc).
Make them look a little like a MacBook on the outside, make the software look a little like Windows 98 or XP (just a little, since very few people in the US haven't at least SEEN a computer, probably with Windows on it) and you could "trick" kids into using these things here.
All that said, I want one, and I want the human charger attachment. :) - schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From wikipedia:
The Children's Machine, also known as XO-1 and previously as the $100 Laptop, is a proposed inexpensive laptop computer intended to be distributed to children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to knowledge and modern forms of education.
And geeks/hackers would want it because it is cheap (disposable) but functional. - arjie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OLPC = One Laptop Per Child. It's quite well known by that name.
- schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I heard on Diggnation that anyone can buy one but you have to buy a second one for donation to a third world child to qualify. But those boys aren't well known for factual input on digg stories... but it's a good idea if it's true.
- dosterm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't normally complain about this type of thing, but that was a really obscure headline. I've read multiple times about this project and didn't really recognize Quanta or the OLPC XO as the $100 laptop.
Interesting post though, despite the weirdly obtuse lead-in. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the last time these are not going to third world countries.
I wouldn't pay more than $100 for one of these anyways. Bought my Compaq for $300 after rebates on the Georgia Tax Free day. Payed for a 12-cell battery upgrade (6+ hours), wireless, and upgraded to 1.25GB of ram myself. Total cost was $450. The back-lit screen is worth most of the extra money IMO, not to mention the extra 39GB of harddrive space I have. - dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great for the countries involved. It makes me wonder why there is not such a program for American kids that still live on the other side of the digital divide.
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1maybe they wont do it so that third worlders wont be tempted to sell them
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Somehow I find the argument that you can't give a poor person something because he might sell it to be almost offensive, however I did give a computer to someone who lives on disability (not exactly poor) and I suspect he sold it to buy cigarettes.
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2oh great, as if you were not loud and annoying enough on the internet already.
- troye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I sense the force is strong within you - dugg.
