- dmorel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Let me know when the 360 XBMC install guide is out.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14save your guess and RTFA
- draggy73, on 11/03/2007, -4/+15It's still not playing DivX or XVID content. The console still end up playing WMV format, and all the author's initialy gripes about the quality of the wmv codec are still present.
In the end, it's simply transcoding from Divx to WMV... nothing original here.
The author is confused.
On one hand states: "able to on-the-fly transcode many video and audio formats into WMV format"
And then: "TVersity is able to trick the console into thinking the source format is WMV"
uhhh. cuz it "IS" WMV.. there's no trick there... - Juano11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Perhaps you should read your own reference. The guys at runtime360 are now recommending TVersity over their own program.
- dan4prez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The article is wrong anyways. It says that you need Windows Media Center or Vista Ultimate to stream video, but all you need is Windows Media Player 11 now. I have XP and it works fine. I just use VLC to transcode the video real quick to WMV and then I stream it. It comes out good.
Here's an article that was on digg a few weeks ago about using VLC to transcode to WMV:
http://happybeggar.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=60&Itemid=2 - ShawnAU, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10This is a great guide for anyone who wants to know how to play DIVX and XVID with out too much trouble.
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you are using Media Center and want to do the same thing, you could just use Transcode 360. Works great and is a lot easier to setup.
http://www.runtime360.com/ - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yea I can sum it up the whole thing up in two: "use tversity"
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed. The source file IS being encoded into WMV from its original format. It's having it done on the fly, but it's still having it done... It's WMV when it gets to the console.
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's worth mentioning that it also looks like it works with audio and images....not just video.
- obeseotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My guide to streaming media to a 360:
1. Buy a used Xbox1 and a solderless modchip.
2. Install modchip (easier than building a PC).
3. Torrent a XBMC auto installer disc.
4. Use your 360 for games and forget about using it as a media center. - greerso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can adjust the quality, but it only gets more processor intensive. I've been streaming 1280x720 over ethernet without a problem, but I've had to dedicate a pc to the transcoding.
- thegreenone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4geez, this article has about 10,000 more words then it needs to have.
- hobbsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Please Microsoft - can't you just allow DivX and XViD to play natively inside the XBOX360? would make life easier for us all, rather than fannying around with this
- trouble916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WMP11 can play DivX.
WMP11 can stream certain video formats to XBox.
Please Microsoft, why can't you make the obvious happen? Do you really want me to stop using WMP11 sharing and install this TVersity thing? - CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4agreed, its basically streaming the content over the network. Not really a good solution. XVID support is literally the only thing keeping me from getting a 360. I have an original xbox, and use it to play xvid all the time, I am not taking a step back in functionality.
- Jocose, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2As far as I can tell this is no better than transcode 360. Which is a fantastic piece of software that operates near seamlessly and runs invisibly in the background on your host PC.
- dodgyd55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does this actualy work, nice. i was doing it the stupid hacky way with notepad :(
- zl1nk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2transcoding craps out your pc, unless you are running a multi core processors. Especially if it is your media PC and you are recording at the same time.........
- reynante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My server specs: Celeron 2.6 o'clocked to 3.0Ghz. 1Gb RAM. onboard LAN/AUDO/VGA/RCAout. My wife and I can watch movies using VLC (Media Center is useless. I already have a full computer, why do I need a limiting interface.) or PowerDVD while the kids watch another movie on the Xbox360 transcoding on the same box. Also have Pimpstreamer running for my PSP and MediaMonkey for the MP3's. I'm pretty happy with the setup. It puts a smile on my face when technology works this well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Weee, I got it to work.
I put streamed some porn over. Quality sucked though. Damn it. - rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And a Mac version...? ((crosses fingers))
- thasmadawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Connect360 does video, just wmv though. I'm hoping they'll implement transcoding in the next big update.
- fatalfury, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I use transcode 360 from www.runtime360.com
It is probably the easiest to use and is very reliable. - greerso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Guess again, or read the article...
- blergle, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1...until you want to watch something in hi-def.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's still not playing on the xbox 360, it's passing through if anything. Call me when I can burn the divx to a cd and play it on 360.
- reynante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use transcode360 and it works like a charm. Sure I had to get Media Center running on the PC but it's worth it. I use it as my movie/music/photo server around the house. There's also an update on the recommendation of using Tversity over Transcode360.
Update: Having played around with TVersity some more I have to qualify my recommendation since theres an additional issue worth considering. Previously I mentioned how poorly the Xbox 360 UPNP video client is at upscaling, a bigger issue is the client’s terrible user-interface. All video files and folders are flattened out into a single list, which can be very inconvenient when you have to scroll through 100’s of files to find the one you want; both issues are outside of TVersity’s control, so let’s hope Microsoft gets on the case and addresses them in their next update.
And Microsoft while you’re at it, how about some MPEG 2 love? Forcing UPNP servers to transcode to WMV just isn’t right! - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have always preached to people in the great investment of less than $100 for a video card with an outlet of most any kind to your TV. Been watching everything on my TV for at least 2 years now (which of course means I know I am well behind the times on what video cards have to offer now, but damn, mine still works perfectly).
Get a nice enough tv, and with the simple clicks of your remote, you can push a button to go from cable, Xbox 360, 2nd monitor on the computer. And with all those people making the Nintendo's "Wiimote" programs so you can use it as your mouse pointer (or of course just a wireless mouse), if you get geeky enough, you could be just that more comfortable with playing any media you want without having to move (much). - emperor799, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.gamesfirst.com/?id=1267 no new server required, just use MCE
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you have a decent sized thumb drive...
oddly enough, I didn't have to do anything on my router (a crappy D-link wireless G... the cheap one) and streaming videos works great with XP + media player 11.
Additionally... I never even thought about transcoding to get xvid/divx to my xbox360. I think I'll have to try the VLC method when I get home... this will make many things much easier on watching videos with my family. - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Streaming content to the Xbox 360 is a real pain in the ass. Half the time the 360 will not see the computer (yes opened every port/firewall) The PC sees the 360 100% of the time but the 360 will not. I find it easier to just use the Transcoding the video through VLC which takes about 10 mins or less and you can do as many files at as you want at the same time and just throw the file on a thumb drive and your good to go.
- stephenv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I though there was going to be more to this to justify an 8-page article, but in a nutshell they tell you to install TVersity on a semi-decent windows box and configure your router (PnP port forwarding should work).

- Skeuomorph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, a Mac compatible UPnP media server is the first reply in this set of replies... Does nobody click URLs before commenting any more?
- adougherty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been using Tversity for a couple of weeks now, and have been impressed with it. Native WMV files work just fine (but then I suppose they would ^_^), though there are too many artifacts when it transcodes from Xvid to WMV.
As others have stated, the first 5 pages can be summed up with "use tversity." The last few pages at least have some tweaking tips, that I will be trying when I get home tonight to remove those artifacts. - andrewdevlin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1From the article:
"First off you will need to ensure that you don’t already have any other media servers linked to your console – if anything, it will most likely be your Windows Media Center based PC using Microsoft Media Extender software. Of course, you’ve found a much more practical and easier solution now, so you don’t need that anymore."
Right...I'll just throw my Media Centre away because TVersity does everything. - anthonybruno, on 10/24/2007, -3/+3i just use transcode360
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm still waiting on a Mac solution, right now Connect360 does music and pictures, but it doesn't do video. I'm hoping they'll do it.
- Andrewc989, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For some readers who may need this put more simply. If any of your videos are encoded with a codec which Windows Media Player 11 supports (this includes the .avi format as well), you can now stream them on the fly.
- cmirza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is totally ass backwards. Wasting CPU cycles transcoding what are already not the best looking videos into yet another lossy codec is a waste of time. Please Microsoft & DivX, gives us a DivX codec for the 360. It would make so many people happy.
- procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I just tried out TVersity this weekend, and its OKAY, quality is like viewing a 56k stream off a website. Its transcoding in realtime to wmv, so very processor intensive. I uninstalled it after playing around with it for 10 minutes or so.
I hope someone else comes up with a better hack/mod. - Homez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Normal Windows XP works fine, seems this source is slightly innacurate!
- garreh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"This is a great guide for anyone who wants to know how to play DIVX and XVID with out too much trouble. "
What the hell is wrong with you people? No it isn't a good guide, as this whole principle of "transcoding" is P O I N T L E S S.
Why not connect your gfx card directly up to your TV, and then use the secondary monitor to output the video. Hell, you can even use your PC at the same time, it's like having two monitors.
Transcoding is absolutely pointless. The only benefit I see is that you can use the 360s remote, but I heard that even this is limited as you cannot "fast forward" when streaming to 360.
Not only that but it sucks every last bit of life out of your PC if transcoding HD, which, after all, is what the "next generation" media is apparently all about.
Wake me up when I can burn Xvid to disc and slide it in the 360 bay. - freakgd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1did anyone notice the 899.00 price tag by forkidsdirect
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Just get a $40 DVD player that support that feature.
- FunkLord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0When my 360 first searches for TVersity it can't find it. I have to hit "restart sharing" on TVersity and then it will come up on the 360...but when I try to connect it says a firewall may be blocking it but I've opened the port already. Any ideas?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Better than using Zune, which is now used for the PC Setup crap described here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/alldownloads.htm
Funny thing is, Zune bombs when starting up each and every time you try to share media. And I've put it on 3 different machines in my house.
My next step was to reformat and put Media Center on my machine, but.. hopefully this will work. - fatcatfan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1dugg down: yet *another* article about TVersity, and the author of this one doesn't seem to understand that your files *are* being re-encoded into WMV.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1MAC VERSION PLEASE MKAY THANKS
Connect360 works only for WMV files and there seems to be no utility to convert to WMV! -
