- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"How will the PS3 rack cluster look like?"
melted sizzling heap of plastic, thats what. - akraut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The cluster itself was disassembled almost a year ago. Based on the presentation Mr. Steffen gave to our club (http://uhacc.org/forums/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=1618) the machines have no floating point capabilities, making them nearly useless. Anyone that wants more info, is welcome to post their questions at http://uhacc.org/forums/ and get an answer pretty quick. Craig (gevmage) tends to frequent the forums.
- megabytehl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8A PS3 Cluster will look like SkyNet
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7very very cool!!!
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8But still very, very nice.
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not so cool because none of the code uses the vector capabilities of the PS2... I don't get the point of the exercise.
- Permanent4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wait, I got one, too...
In Soviet Russia, Playstation clusters YOU! - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ur missing the point, which was: "a test bench for scientific computation on 'toy' hardware."
- x3n1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you look here http://arrakis.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ps2/index.php for the main page
Hmmmm ``These pages last updated 2003 November 17'' - Maeser, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8At the rate they're going, we're more likely to see a Revolution cluster than a PS3 cluster.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Then what are they going to do with all those spare wand-remote controllers?
I say bring on the mass PS3 octopilers! - cozby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Holy rusty servers Batman!
Maybe they should get that cluster to host their site...!@?# - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since the URL says "Arrakis", I am guessing they use it to harvest the "spice melange".
- kramit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well acording to some rough maths, its about 22.5Ghz of power and 2.6Gb of ram for about £2-3k. Wich even way you look at it, if you need the raw proccessing power, then this should really be considered as a viable solution. Are we going to see budget strapped IT admins buying up all the xbox's and ps2's on ebay and in gamestation to fufill thier needs? (* run off to try and comondere the company credit card from the MD* )
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3a3f27852c0f.htm
I too have heard that rumor, but this was the only source that seemed to have what looks like an actual article. I REALLY dont know how credible it is (some of the comments even claim BS while other support it), but at least you know it wasnt just all in your head. It has been a rumor for several years. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Can it play Pong?
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Netcraft confirms it, the PS2 cluster is dead.
- blackthorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I only own a PlayStation one, you insensitive clod.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Then what are they going to do with all those spare wand-remote controllers?"
TV Remotes? - Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where can I get the PS2 linux? I just wanted to know I could do it myself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah! I remeber that Hype!
"The tests used code running on just the core CPU, not the Vector Units"
Nobody ever could figure out Vector Unit 1 and Vector Unit 2 could they? - metalstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah this is older. Its not even running anymore. Unless they put it back up. Cause when I was in the NCSA they were just all sitting in storage. They moved buildings and the OS on top of them to cluster was pretty bad so they didn't bother setting it back up.
- Edogz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes, I suppose it is interesting then. But does making a cluster out of PS2's really give much of a performance gain then clustering desktop computers? The PS2 only has a 300mhz processor, and unless you are calculating things very optomized to using the emotion engine, it would only act like a 300mhz (pentium or equivelent desktop computer). It also only has 32 MB of ram. I would think it would be much more helpful to make a cluster out of computers with a higher clock speed instead of highly specialized gaming machines.
It would be nice to see how this performs anyways regardless of these limitations... - kimzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet image!
- blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can you imagine a beowulf cluster of...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Badass!
- cntp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is old....
- krum0786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember when said that the original version of the PS2 was capable of launching missiles.... I wonder what the PS3 is actually capable of.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Creating missiles.
- myfei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2are you kidding? spell grammar correctly and you'll be allowed to comment.
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2SJK8990,
This is the first time many have seen this, so WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. If you find it to be a dupe, report it as a dupe, dont be a dumbass and comment that its a dupe. - wadelindsey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wasn't it a few years ago that the rumor made the rounds that Saddam was attempting to mass import PS2s because he couldn't get his hands on any powerful computers to do weapons support? Or did that just happen in my head?
- Voodooengine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Can someone spell P-o-i-n-t-l-e-s-s?
- TimeForAnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I heard that rumor too! I think it's funny now because I hear all the PS3's fan boys around campus making similar comments. "It's a supercomputer! NASA is gonna use them at MARS!"
- sabotank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shiney
- kirodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So can they build WMD's with that???
- pizzza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Each of the two VUs is capable of doing 4 Multiply-Adds (two operations) in a single clock. With a CPU clock speed of 300 MHz, that's 2.4 GFlops per VU, or at least 4.8 GFlops for the whole Emotion Engine."
http://arrakis.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ps2/using_vector_units.php (second paragraph) - corrosion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will wait for the PS3 to appear on the market to see if the ps2 linux kit becomes cheaper... it is too expensive for what it really is...
- Awesomedude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1+ digg for being from me school, and to do a ps3 cluster you would need more money then the usa is in debt
- Permanent4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Isn't the new standard whether or not it can play Doom?
- sjk8990, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The illiterate masses have spoken: it doesn't matter how old the content is, the unwashed will digg it anyway (and dugg it when it showed up here before: http://www.digg.com/hardware/PlayStation2_cluster_running_Linux )
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -14/+13how does your moms rack look?
- PERKASETMUNCHER, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Look, it's a playstation 2 cluster *****!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4LOL!
You won the internet for today! - droggo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2PS3 Cell Chip cluster = PetaFLOP
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2also - hideous! What the hell were they thinknig when they designed that console! Clearly they don't want you racking them up, or putting your cokkies on top of it.
- grot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1The most important thing in this post is the unbelievably bad grammer. Since the news is so old, you have to pick on something:
"How will the PS3 rack cluster look like?"
?HOW? well, presumedly it will look like something by reflecting lightwaves (well, absorbing and re-emitting, but now we're getting picky). Oh, I'm sorry, did you want to speculate on it's future configuration and visul aspect? Try
WHAT on for size.
