Pandora Will Launch Wifi Internet Radio Device
techcrunch.com — Pandora made a pre-announcement of an upcoming Wifi music player to be built by SanDisk and powered by Zing. The working prototype that CTO Tom Conrad demo ’d tonight was physically similar to the Sansa Connect device launched last month with Yahoo, although it was slightly longer and thinner. Pictures included.

- stealthc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24I like Pandora. It evolves a playlist for you based on what you vote up or down. I'd use it to replace my radio if I could.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2this is why we need municipal wifi. i can already stream shoutcast and other internet media on my PSP. if most cities had municipal wifi, i could easily use it in the car to replace the radio.
it'd be pretty cool if last.fm put out a device like this too or if someone made a way to run the last.fm player on the PSP. once municipal wifi becomes widely adopted, the FCC & Clear Channel controlled radio will be made obsolete. this means more choice for listeners and increasing popularity for indie artists, who are generally favored by internet radio.

Ubiquitous broadband, via wifi or something else, is coming soon. Don't invest in xm, sirius, or a combined company, because all they will be in 5 years is a provider of content. internet radio will be the delivery method of choice. - realchaos1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Digitally Imported played around with such an idea a while ago. Wasn't wifi though =3
Oh yeah, down vote RIAA and the new royalty rates!

- NoCalSF, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2If you have access to Wifi, odds are that you are at home. If you are at home are you going to listen/use Pandora through crappy earbuds or even good headphones?
Add EVDO or BT to piggyback off cellphone data lines, and you have an amazing product.
Until then, this is a "cool" feature but its utility is not so apparent. BTW, Pandora already has integration with Sprint as well as Sonos.- Yoshi39, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"If you have access to Wifi, odds are that you are at home."
Just walking down my street with my laptop I can see about 10 different (unencrypted) access points on about a distance of 100m meaning my laptop is never without coverage. - smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1they are thinking ahead, and it's this kind of forward-thinking technological leadership that creates future trends. cities like San Francisco have already begun adopting municipal wifi. there are many powerful opponents to municipal wifi, and many people are too myopic to see the need for it, but this _is_ the way of the future. it would free people from their dependence on the consolidated mainstream media outlets, namely the tv networks and radio. it would also be a great boon for web services and mobile internet devices, greatly increasing their usefulness and range of applications.
these devices are clearly aimed at metropolitan areas with abundant wifi hotspots and cities with municipal wifi. and if you've read the article, you'll see that they've already addressed the problems of wifi unavailability. as more metropolitan areas start adopting municipal wifi you're definitely going to see more and more mobile internet devices taking advantage of increasingly ubiquitous wifi/internet access.

- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Okay...this looks like a commercial to me. Dug down.
- jmreid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Okay... you seem like a jerk to me. Dugg down.
- cbrunet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Wow, sounds great, too bad Pandora doesn't work for me anymore.
"I'm from Canada, they think I'm slow, eh...."- kevin_ou, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Have you tried a US-based proxy?
http://www.aliveproxy.com/proxy-list/proxies.aspx/United_States-US - cbrunet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not a proxy, but I tried the cloak to no avail and just haven't spent the time to get a proper proxy working for me. I'd rather just move to another system like last.fm or go back to listening to my static music. It's just too bad cause it (Pandora) introduced me to some great new music that I actually bought albums of (GASP!).
- kevin_ou, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Check this out: http://lifehacker.com/software/internet-radio/how-to-access-pandora-from-outside-the-us-257706.php
Then try this URL, it's the only one that loaded the player for me. But I'm in the US so it may still not work for you:
http://sp-15.info/index.cgi/000100A/http/pandora.com - cbrunet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Kevin
I still get the same crappy "We're having unexpected technical difficulties. Our engineers are scrambling to fix things." error.
:(
Thanks though, I think I just need to give up.

- Jade10145, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1cool idea but to really make this thing sell they would def have to add a HD. Only getting to listen to music when near a hot spot would suck..
- Lobstertacular, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I thought it said "Pandora Wii" and was extremely surprised for a minute.
- kurtwinter, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Anyone else of this "powered by" *****? Maybe my resume should say Kurt Winter, built by Mr. & Mrs. Winter, powered by Mountain Dew.
- TexanPsycho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If this is less than $100, then I'll be first in line. And it better come out in England the same time as in the US. I hate waiting ages... :(
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i wish last.fm would come out with something like this, or if the last.fm player could be adapted for PSP (and cache music like the Pandora device will).
once wifi availability becomes ubiquitous, we just need an open mobile internet platform that all these different services can be run on, instead of having to carry around a bunch of single-service devices. the PSP would be pretty a pretty good platform, if only Sony would open it up. but even still, there are some pretty awesome homebrew apps and even more possibilities that haven't been explored. - dephrye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sorry for the VERY late reply but I listen to Last.FM on my psp. Pretty simple using PSPradio and PandoraFM to generate an M3u.

- DesuKN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2That's nice. Now give the rest of the world Pandora back >_>
Seriously, that made no ***** sense. "Hai, we're scared about copyright lawsuits, so we're going to block everyone except those in the nation with the most inane copyright laws in the world, lol". - DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0The royalties thing still isn't settled here in the US, is it? I know they got an extension, but is it really wise for Pandora to be investing so much in new development when there's impending doom? I guess they're trying to increase demand so they can make a convincing argument to keep a sane system in place and keep Pandora around. I hope to god Pandora comes out on top of this.
- dogstylee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Peole listen to radio?
- tryte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I hope they go with a couple gigs of flash memory instead of a HD. That way, you'd have just enough storage for when you're outside a hotspot, without all the disadvantages of a HD.
