Why don't you guys submit stories without your puppets and see if they hold up? - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Access to my pr0n collection while in the shower? I'm sold.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25This article sucks. Not just because some asshat mob-ring seems to have submitted this article and orgy-dugg it, but because the article itself sucks.
The laptop is NOT waterproof - it has drainage for minor spills. A common waterproof certification requires a device to withstand being submerged in 3 meters of water for 30 minutes with no problems. After passing that test, it can be sold as "Waterproof." Try that with this laptop. Wont work. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22A sweet computer indeed! If you fall and break your skull, fear not, your laptop will survive long enough to be stolen while you lie unconscious!
This would be cool for designers. A lot of people seem to have bright ideas while sitting on the toilet or in the shower. If I could have my laptop in the shower, I'd do a lot of work faster. Of course, this won't work in the shower. Only protected from "small amounts of liquid."
We need better cooling systems so we can have REAL waterproof laptops. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24"Do you not think that websites have multiple readers that like to promote the sites they read?"
I am sure they do. But Kyle (Hardocp) and Roscoe (Designtechnica) do this habitually, and to each other's stories. Case in point:
http://digg.com/links/Digg_Member_Makes_%5BH%5Dard_Accusations
Believe me or not, these guys do abuse the system to boost their traffic. It's been demonstrated before, and it will keep happening until someone says something about it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Haha, oh yes. Mod me down. That doesn't incriminate you guys any further.
Roscoe are you going to write an article about me like Kyle and submit it back to the front page? - Nightspark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"a Duo-Core processor"? You can say dual-core or Core Duo, but Duo-Core is nonsense.
And it is important to note, like RyeBrye mentioned above, that this laptop is not waterproof. If it was waterproof I don't think it would need a drainage system. This article's title is inaccurate, and this really isn't news. - snoble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Guys these conversations/arguments are way too meta. Any chance you can limit your comments to the story at hand in the story comment areas? If you want to talk about digg and who's doing what on digg it would be considerate if you could do that on a platform designed for this. And if no such platform exists you can always create a blog, or a google group, and argue about who's wrecking digg there.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Cool!! I never surfed while surfing before ;)
- Jeremy82465, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13That is considered an article? Its a snippet at best. When the ads are bigger (much bigger) than the "article" I would have to suggest people not bother. Im going to have to go with HackJandy on this one. I dont know how it would ever get to the front page other than mass digg from friends or some other such activity.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yes, yes, all well and good, but is it *coffeeproof*, man!?

Looks like you have a crush on Dailytech. I would stop pointing fingers if I were you. - mrbender, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ok the Editing stuff do not work well with me sorry !
so the Video HERE
http://www.akihabaranews.com/news-11643-X.html - dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The test they do is nothing like a spill would be....they slowly pour the water on, but hey its a start. Instead of ruining your laptop, its gonna make it look like you pissed your pants if you have it in your lap :)
- metfoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8we have an Lenovo thinkpad that just arrived in our office yesterday with a drainage system. Theres 4 or 5 small holes on the bottom, and tubing connecting to drainage holes on the keyboard tray
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it is not even water-resistant it has a spill proof keyboard nothing Else
- trogdor282, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Meh the new thinkpads are gonna be better: http://www.lenovo-tapes.com/
- Roscoe1976, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I think you have lost credibility there buddy. You can't call the folks at DailyTech clowns and then submit all of their stories. I would let it go...
- SavannahLion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IRT @ sleepless
Isn't the article about the CF-Y5? - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd like to point out to the people that think the "waterproof" part is hot stuff, it's just the keyboard that's waterproof. From what I can gleen, there's just an internal membrane covering what would be the top of the hardware. If you drop this thing into the lake or bathtub, you might as well forget it.
- sleepless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Take a bath with this:

For other reasons:
http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/rugged_reliable.asp - galacticroot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"impact of up to 220 lbs"
Did anyone else notice how utterly meaningless that specification is (assuming they really mean impact)?
Practically any laptop can withstand 6.8 slugs impacting it at some maximum velocity. Furthermore, they don't specify any other parameters. Is this impact onto the strongest part of the case by a big lump of silicone putty, or onto the LCD surface by a sharp diamond tipped spike? - Dan_2gngCrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Alex Albrecht should get this so that next live edition of diggnation he doesn't have to worry about puking on his laptop!
- skoobisnaxs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is a difference between "waterproof" and "water resistant". This is "water resistant".
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Toughbooks have been around for a while...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The video on their site is amazing. Thats alot of water flowing through it.
- Ainast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have to say I am very proud of my HP Pavilion Zv6000. I had a wreck(not my fault) not too long ago that totalled my car. The seat rail actually broke and the seat leaned back far enough to let me slide out from under the seatbelt towards the back. I landed on my laptop then while the car was still spinning it got slammed into the door. Then again I guess its because I bought a really hardcore case for it. I even fell asleep with my face sortof on the keyboard once and "drooled" a little into the keyboard. It still works 100% I haven't spilt coffee or coke on it yet and its only got a few chip crumbs under the keys that I can't get out.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4WILL THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM GET CLOGGED WITH SEMEN?
- mrbender, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Video of the waterproof Keyboard in action here with a full cup of water !

Oups sorry this is here for the video
http://www.akihabaranews.com/news-11643-HDTV%3A My Let%27s Series 5 on video Part I.html (Vidoe) - h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know at least two local utility companies here in NY who are using Panasonic laptops in the field. I guess these things are really durable... sort of like the Toyota of portable PCs...
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I work for the service center that does the repairs on Toughbooks in the US. You would be AMAZED at what comes in here. Anything from units with bullet holes and acid burns to laptops people have had fall out or off of moving cars. The things aren't invincible, but they are incredibly tough.
Panasonic also has a couple of other models, the CF-18 and CF-29 which have optional rubberized keyboards that keep water from getting into the unit. They are all water-resistant.
The panasonic models beat the hell out of Itronix & Lenovo. - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now a trapped diver can email for help.
- chuk1, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1i am going to buy one my self http://panasonictoughbooknew.blogspot.com/
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If there was a Hummer that had the longevity of a Toyota, that'd be a better analogy :)
- sleepless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The toughbook CF29 can be tossed into a lake. Several incidents took place in Fairfax County, VA where a few CF29 were stolen and tossed into a lake and later recovered in working conditions.
- backwardsfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: Japanese...
It's 1490 grams. Available May 19th.
I work at a Panasonic dealer here in Japan.
Comments about the water thing from our Panasonic Authorized Dealer point of view:
Customer: Hey, I was on the train and some goof beside me spilt his farking coffee on me and my new farking "waterproof" Laptop.
Us: Gee, that's too bad. Did it hurt?
Customer: Naw, it was an Iced Decaf Rasberry Frappaccino.
Us: Mmm, those are tasty. Have you tried the green-tea ones?
Customer: Aw, no. WTF, nevermind about the coffee; what about my farking Laptop man?
Us: Chill dude. We'll take a look. It's probably covered.
Versus:
Customer: I was surfing pr0n on my toughbook in the bath and it slipped in.
Us: Was it plugged in? You know, that can be dangerous. Remember those pictures in school about the hair dryer and the bath tub?
Customer: Yeah, I know; but I really digg boobs man.
Us: Yeah, I understand.
Customer: So?
Us: You're a dumb-ass. You want us to order you a new one ad charge it to your account?
Panasonic has worded their warranty on this computer rather vaguely. It DOES cover minor spills. It DOESN'T cover "intentional" accidents. They provide a few examples like the one above. No idea who would make the last call... probably somebody in an office somewhere...
Would be happy to ship this item to anyone interested. (As well as any other Japan exclusive Panasonic gear. There's a TON of it.) - mydiggname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1These are pretty groovy too
http://www.itronix.com/
.....thumbs up on anyone making computers for people who aren't in college anymore who like to surf whilst outside.
(panasonic, lenovo, itronix) - bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4yeah, i've seen this too. It's nice but the tough books bring this and sooo much more to the table.
But the tough book is still over kill for 90% of the ppl out there... go lenovo! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow insider footage of a new thinkpad really good its amazing http://www.lenovo-tapes.com/
. - brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Holy crap the video is awesome. and the fanfare makes an Apple introduction look like a Cub Scout meeting! LOL
- jriskin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Can anyone who can read Japanese tell how much it weighs?
- mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Man, this is a Social Bookmarking site. Obviously, people are going to digg stuff that their friends tell them to - and it's not just them doing it, but you may not have noticed it in other cases because you're not looking for it. Hell, the site includes a friends feature for just this reason.
This was an interesting enough link. There's no need to start pointing fingers at people just because they all dugg something and now it's on the frontpage. - JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Hack Jandy is my hero.
- Roscoe1976, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Your link isn't working :(
- CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Whoa. Cool.
- rayishu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4great now i can watch movies in the bathtub!
- nanoage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Better be tougher then it looks!
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Who the hell dugg this comment down? It's totally relevant and non-inflammatory.
LOSERS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6I responded to this in another story -- which incidentally got burried because of Kyle's sock puppet submission
http://digg.com/hardware/ATI_vs._NVIDIA_gameplay_in_Oblivion_WoW#c1500273 - brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1LOL, having ignored Hack, it looks like you're talking to yourself. Why even waste your time with his comments? He's just an annoying little hippocritical piss ant.
