They will be allowing current customers to pickup their systems from PC club but that is IT. No firesale sales and no discounts, all stock will be impounded and PC Club will cease to exist."

- Surrealist2020, on 05/14/2008, -3/+31I worked as a technician for PC Club for about 4 years and I experienced the gradual decline of this company's reputation first hand. The company pressured me to start implementing dishonest computer services, hence the reason why I left. Other clues started to hint at the company's inevitable failure such as fewer inventory shipments and the fact that sales were dropping month after month. The writing was smeared all over the walls, but they continued to leave employees and store managers out of the loop. I wish the best of luck to all former PC Club employees.
- exilepc, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6I worked there too, and i was hearing of employees coming to work and the stores where empty and the signs where gone.
- bigt8dogg, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5I worked at the Tigard, Oregon location for a total of about 9 months. While I was there, I could definitely feel the vibe of a company in trouble. I heard stories about how they closed about 10 stores right before I started working there from long time employees that were still with the company at other stores. They told me about their methods of closing the stores: Change the locks in the middle of the night. Nobody knew anything until it happened. I was stunned that they closed completely, without trying to get rid of any of their inventory first, but that's about the way they ran things. It always seemed like nobody at Corporate knew what anyone else at Corporate was doing; to resolve stupid things that would take a couple minutes on the phone w/ someone took 5-10 phone calls, a barrage of emails, and people yelling at people over the phone all the time, and even then, only about 75% of the problems were successfully resolved. I'm sad to see them go, especially now that all of the hundreds of systems I've sold to my own customers no longer have warranties through PC Club; I have to do all the legwork myself and pay out of my own pocket now. Oh well, ***** happens.
- techlyc, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3I remember early '06 when our store manager (who the week prior got promoted to RM) told us that he was going to CO for a week to assist with a management problem.
He came back a little upset that he helped pack all the inventory onto pallets and load it onto trucks - just minutes after telling closing employees that they were doing a "special inventory check". Employees at ALL PC Clubs located outside of CA arrived to work the next morning to empty lots with handwritten signs on the doors. *SHOCK* just like today?!
The next week after that, an underperforming CA store figured that all nonprofitable stores were next under the axe, and decided to preempt a company decision. They started walking with tech parts and abandoned customer systems to the parking lot and putting it in their cars. Once again, my RM had to go handle the situation. Imagine his surprise seeing the entire staff sitting on the curb - all in handcuffs.
This is over two years in the making. When Jackson's brother took over - the death knell had sounded for the company. Newegg, Pricewatch and TigerDirect didnt help. Falling hardware prices, and rapid new generations of hardware creating quick obsolescence (and thus "dust-gatherers") didnt help. Poor top-level management after Mr Lan's passing was just the nail in the coffin.
I resigned from the company rather than watch it bleed to death. I helped set a few records for the company with a couple of the other Digger/former PCClub employees here. I cannot say it was a favorite job - but I don't regret any of it. It helped place me in a good spot, and I'm still in contact with most of the staff that worked at my location when I did.

Dear Customers
We regrettably want to inform you that PCClub filed for Chapter 7 today.
If you have any question or concern, please email customerinfo@pcclub.com
We truly apologize if this decision will cause you any inconveniences and we want you to know that your business has been appreciated over the years.
PCClub Management- beachtrader, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5If they closed due to Chapter 7 bankruptcy then it means there is no money for anything. You're not going to get anything. And, unless it was specifically written into an employment contract there is no right to severance or vacation.
- litkaj, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6Severance, no, but in most states vacation time is required to be paid on termination of employment, typically with your last pay check.

Cant get blood from a stone. - bjornski, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3And the Enron employees should have been able to collect their promised benefits, too.
I wonder if those workers got paid for their unused vacation time. - Yodacola, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I have worked with a company that would make you pay for your vacation you had if you leave before years end.

- abohling, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2I have been here as an employee and when it comes to your level as a creditor in cases like you are very low. My first indication of problems was when my paycheck bounced and I never got any of that money. Too many more important people had to be paid off first that there was nothing left. Even if there had been money left, if memory is serving me correctly, I would have only seen a percent on the dollar anyway. Oh and in case you have any doubt - bounced paycheck = horrible - no money plus bank fees.

- skrasis, on 05/14/2008, -3/+21I quit the LASA (Santa Clarita) location almost a year ago and never looked back. For a company that routinely treated its employees with complete disrespect and irregard along with a failing business model (Comp USA anyone) it was only a matter of time.
- Surrealist2020, on 05/14/2008, -1/+10There was no way they could survive against the likes of Newegg or Tiger Direct.
- fuhnoo, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7Gotta love it. They used to average what... 23% profit on their sales? Recently, products averaged at around 11-17% margin. It definitely was a matter of time.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Realize it wasnt JUST the company dood. It was your manager/management staff that treated you with disrespect. I've been with PC Club for ....6 years. I was never shown any disrespect. Not to mention I earned it. You dont get respect for free. Ask all of my fellow employees at ORCK. I'm the short asian tech there. I can understand your frustration. But not ALL of PC Club was bad.
- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2i worked for the modesto store for two years. this is ridiculous. the company always undervalued their staff, but to totally hang their hundreds of employees out to dry like that? i met a lot of cool people there, though, and it was a pleasure working with some pretty intelligent people in the modesto store.
i wish all the laid off employees the best of luck to them and their families.
- Jer1, on 05/14/2008, -2/+10Are all the people with rebates pending from either store, pretty much screwed?
- skrasis, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7My guess would be they would try and process as many that are still pending the really crappy thing is the warranties! all voided
- bjornski, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3If they won't even alert their employees of closure, they're sure as hell not going to go out of their way to fulfill any outstanding rebates.
- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3depends if its a pc club rebate or a manufacturer rebate. pc club: you're screwed manu: you will still get it.

- fuhnoo, on 05/14/2008, -2/+20I used to work at PC Club as well for 1 year. I enjoyed it until management became shrewd and tried to enforce us to implement policies that forced us to cheat and lie to the customers. The internal workings of the company also violated several laws and prohibited any sort of positive internal growth. This isn't even mentioning the inventories that were so inefficient that they often times lasted until 2 or 3 in the morning, most of the time in vain.
I'll miss my coworkers and the deals, but that's about it.
"To focus on customer values by offering quality computer products and services in the most effective and innovative way to computer professionals." ... lol.- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6The only time our inventory dident go untill 3 in the monring was when Jim Smith was our manager and aparently he sacked the company for around 30k in theft... so i guess thats why his inventorys went so well..
- fuhnoo, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3lol, our inventories were spent looking for ***** like PS2 adapters and cables. Then, at around 1 in the morning, we would focus on important things, such as missing quad cores. It was just an overall frustrating experience working there. The best part was probably when they promised me a raise and decided not to give it to me until 6 months after they originally promised, without retro...
- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1jesus ours inventories never lasted that long. the longest i think was like 10 or 11.
CCMD
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1What policies did they try go get you to implement that were lies and cheating? That is a call on your manager then or your management staff. I again have been with PC Club for 6 years. And Grant it I've seen 6 managers durring that time. Some of them were shady, but none of them made me lie cheat or steal.
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Yeah man and if they did ask us to we would have simply refused!
-Josh ORCK - fuhnoo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1It's an interesting mixture. One of the things that happened is mentioned in one of my posts below. They also attempted to refuse multiple employees the right to view their employee files... even though they had made appointments with the HR supervisor.
Another thing that many PC Club employees may remember is all those times managers asked us not to take a lunch due to low coverage. When that happens (assuming the employee consents), they are supposed to pay the employee for the lunch time missed. I can guarantee you this wasn't paid out (as confirmed by a corporate audit...).- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Wow nothing like that ever happened at our store..
Josh ORCK - MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Agreed strange that never happened in our store as well... WITH ANY of my managers (6 of them). I would volunteer to stay a bit longer or take a lunch later. But I always got my lunch, or chose not to take it. In any sense if you are on the clock or working you need to NOT clock out. If you are working and get hurt whilist not being on the clock, so much for any compensation. Sooo...Corporate audit? interesting. And you should be getting paid for your missed lunch time if you didnt clock out? Mayhaps not overtime or any special pay. (double time or time and a half etc).
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Wow nothing like that ever happened at our store..

I have spent over $8, grand at the Westwood (L.A.) store in the past 5-years and really appreciated the relationships with this location's employees. It's really sad the BBB gave them an "F" rating but management really declined after the founder died 2- years ago. Sure I love Newegg, but here the employees knew all their customers who were mostly small business owners, UCLA staff/students, and we enthusiasts. And now another local business is gone forever. "R.I.P..." P C Club... You shall be missed. - bubdubb, on 05/14/2008, -16/+21$23 for a SATA cable, wanting to charge $98.00 to plug in an AC adaptor to make sure that was the problem before I purchased one from you. - carlvjack, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Brick and mortar computer stores cannot compete with worldwide online only stores. And that 139 dollar charge is for "Time" not work. You rarely find IT people even lowly ones charge much less for menial work like that.

- forsetifox, on 05/14/2008, -2/+10I was at the Mesa location when they closed the store in the middle of the day. Was not even there for 2 months and I already saw the signs of the companys decline. Same thing happened to CompUSA whom I also worked for for 12 years and got let go. Maybe I'm cursed? Think I should apply to Frys? *evil grin* Poor customers have to go to Best Buy and Fry's to get thier computers fixed now. I feel really sorry for them. ^.^;

I am sorry you had such a bad experience. in Oregon we NEVER sold 20 sata cables.. our 1 meter cable was 12.99 as for the virus and spy ware removal, Its NEVER just one.. and the 98.00 ac adapter thing? - ender7074, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3I bet its just like every other franchise store. It really depends on where you are at. At BB, Ive seen the Geek Squad in one location totally lie to a person whereas the other BB 10 minutes up the street does quality work (or at least as good as you can expect from Geek Squad). Sucks when you get stuck with the crappy store over the ones trying to do right by their clients.
- HaMMeReD, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0Yes, because your store was perfect means every other store is run equally well.

- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2exactly. that didnt look right at all. what did they say? they were changing vendors? yeah right, i bet thermaltake just wanted to get their ***** back before employees started walking out the door with them.
- left, on 05/14/2008, -2/+9Seems like there are a few ex-employees in the thread, myself included. We should start a support group. =P PC Club had some really great employees from my experiences, but management drug the company down since the founder died a few years ago, just bad decision making really. Any employee that did not see this coming wasn't paying attention, the signs had been on the walls for awhile, especially the last month or so with all the HQ "seperations" and policy and price changes. I enjoyed my time there, but it's time to move on.
- Fidget253, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2whats store were you from? And did they give you guys paychecks becasue we didnt get them
- left, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3OCRS. I was off today though. I didn't get a paycheck, and I worked Fri-Mon since we got paid too. I don't anticipate receiving that money either, athough on the e-mails it said we would get paid through today, but I seriously doubt it. I saw the writing on the wall, I took all of my personal belongings out of the store last night, I guess I made a good call on that one.
- smacksaw, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I can imagine the police are going to have to show up at a lot of stores to retrieve the belongings of both staff and customers.

- Thyris, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1The problems went beyond management. Some managers were bad, some were good, needless to say, that the help for managers was minimal. I was a manager at ORCK, and there is such a huge disconnect between HQ and the stores it's ridiculas. They treated a store almost as a francised entity, which sucks as an underpaid manager, lets not even start with the inventory & understaffing issues.
- Fidget253, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2whats store were you from? And did they give you guys paychecks becasue we didnt get them
- Fidget253, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6Yet another Ex-Employee here from LASA.. This kinda sucks but there were a few signs that lead up to this. But After we had to packup the Thermaltake and AG neovo i know we were going to be in trouble.. We just all figure that a few store would be shutdown.. No all of them at once.. But there was no office warning. Not even our regional Manager knew about this
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1We were presuming that HQ was in Pre IPO stages.. I guess we were hoping for the best.. To hell with Latif for not giving us more notice of this event.
- daserg, on 05/14/2008, -2/+10Just my 5¢ from another LASA/LATO Ex-Employee/Manager. My condolences go out to all previous PC Club employees and managers. I have myself had the privilege of working with some of the most intelligent/outgoing and witty staff members throughout the years. My staff was professional and my store co-workers, friends. Best to all of you.... On the other hand, to the upper-management of PC Club/ClubIT *whatever*.. (shakes head). You were tasked with continuing a legacy of Mr Jackson Lan, and you successfully drove a vision into the ground.

- ender7074, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2The really tragic part is that those upper managment idiots are probably walking away with bags of cash while the people that actually made the company run, even though their incompentence, are left out in the cold. Very sad,
- kidd3ckz, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2So what kinda jobs do you guys have now?

- mrBitch, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Out of interest, since I assume "fix" means software as well as hardware, what have you found to be the biggest difference between fixing a Mac and fixing a PC ?
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Thanks daserg. I've been with the club for 6 years and I loved MOST of my time there. And for the most part everyone that I had to work with. Good luck everyone.
- techlyc, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5I forgot the mission statement as soon as a was allowed to. Dugg for remembering it.
Jackson Lan is spinning in his grave at 7200rpm...
--former LATO tech- hgraehl, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1HAHA, little LATO reunion. Sorry for customers/laid off employees, but I derive much satisfaction with the inevitable shutdown. We all saw it coming and pc club deserved it. Succubus of a company that treated employees as objects/tools rather than people and treated customers almost as poorly. Vicodin got me through most days.
- zimphismonger, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0Eh, guess that means I need to join in as well....Our store seemed to be the top of its game compared to all of the other stores.....Although we all knew it was coming, I sure got some valuable experience out of it when things were flying high, although that really had nothing to do with the overall company and more to do with our specific store. BTW Scotty, Jackson def was more of a 5400rpm kinda guy.....otherwise he would probably still have a couple of years left.
- 'Long' retired LATO employee lol
- fuhnoo, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7To be honest, I actually enjoyed working at LASA. The problem started when we got the new regional manager from CCBF (whose name won't be mentioned). Once he came in, it all seemed to go to hell. The individual techs and sales people at our location always did our best to help customers--we never overcharged, we cut people slack, and we wanted to make sure the job was done right.
Once our new RM started trying to force us to do things like charge $20 for doing software installations (in this case... driver installations) after the customer spent $99.99 on an XP format/reinstallation WITHOUT telling them until they pick it up. If the customer complained, we were instructed to force them to wait as we undid all of the software changes we made to make it work.
It's pretty much things like that that really turned me off to working there, even disgusted me. I know that Jackson would be rolling over in his grave if he knew about it. Cheers to all former employees though, especially those who worked with me! ^^- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1One idiot cant take down the whole operation in OR we had a manager who took the company for around 15 grand in theft but its ops were amazing.. He is still at large...
- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1wow thats kind of ridiculous, the software thing... im really curious who the RM is, i knew one of them that got thrown a bunch of new stores in an effort to save money i guess and he is a true stand up guy. he was the RM for the norcal stores for a long time
- fuhnoo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1What was his first name?
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Jim or Steven.. Or whatever he wanted it to be... Hell of a manager.. Bad crook through..

- Pragmatyst, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0As the old saying goes please 'name names and shame the devil'
- bradacus, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7As a manager over at LABB Burbank location I can say that the signs were apparent weeks ago. In fact yesterday before we closed I was looking online to see if there were any reports of PC CLUB filing bankruptcy. It didn't come as a shock but rather disbelief that they would just shaft so many of their employees who were so loyal for so long. Quote from my manager meeting today:
"The checks from last week have been finalized and the period thereafter of days were worked is uncertain." - lawyer
"what about vacation hours?" - anonymous
"You will not be getting vacation hours." - lawyer
Best of luck to all you ex-employees out there. Anyone who managed to stay at PC CLUB for over 6 months is qualified to work anywhere in the field. It was a trying job at times but always rewarding. RIP PC CLUB - RIP Jacksons dream.
Adieu.- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2FT emp's need to Sue the assets of the corp for due vacation time, 401K and years served Bonus.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Ya I had feelings of the pending doom. But not like that. I miss Jackson. He was a wise man. And his dream was great.
- derekge, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Anybody in Burbank need computer repair come to Computer Geeks - we're honest, reliable, and we'll take all of PC Clubs ex-customers.
- Gwencallon, on 05/14/2008, -3/+16Well, I can tell you that I am very angry.
My gaming rig is sitting in the Santa Clarita store right now. They called me today, sometime after 12:30 PM in an attempt to help me get my rig by 5 PM. I came home at 6 to that message on my machine. That's several thousand dollars worth of MY property.
Will I every get my stuff back? What condition will it be in? How long will it take? Who knows!
It's infuriating that the corporation allowed the stores to accept PC's for service when they knew they would be closing their doors. I have already contacted an attorney to see about a class action suit. I don't know if it is actionable ... but if it is ... I'll certainty pursue it.
And, to deny the employees their vacation pay ... outrageous. Vacation pay is earned! Perhaps the employees should look in to taking legal action as well. Good luck to all you guys, I hate that this has happened to you.- Surrealist2020, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Unfortunatly, there is probably no money to be had. They filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy which means that they have to liquidate their entire inventory to pay off their business loan to their creditors.
- wacom01, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Gwencallon i am sorry for the computer. we tried to get as much as possible out of the store. as far as i know the best way to get it back would be to contact the law offices of Robert C. Hsu. contacting PC club at this point would just be a waste of time, because HQ was being taken down while we closed out the store.
- alittleroy101, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Get a sturdy axe, go to the store, and let yourself in. Maybe it's still in the repair bay in the back.
- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3hhey they cant pay their security alarm bill anymore, you might just want to go for it
- Gwencallon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Tempting ... very tempting. :)
- blapierre, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Class action suit against a company that is going bankrupt...I am sure you will be raking in the millions when you win!
- Gwencallon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Yeah! That's exactly what I thought! ... Not.
I was thinking more along the lines of some compensation if I don't get my property back. Which I realize, would be pennies on the dollar at best. I would prefer, by far, to just get my stuff back.
But I wish there was a: "You treated your customers and employees like crap" fine.
- Gwencallon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Yeah! That's exactly what I thought! ... Not.
- HaMMeReD, on 05/14/2008, -3/+1Thats what you get for being a gaming pc enthusiast and not doing your own work building and maintaining your own system.
I'd contact their liquidator, the one selling everything, and demand your computer back. If that doesn't work, B&E.
Chances are the liquidators will sell anything that isn't bolted down, so act quick or it'll probably get sold to someone else for pennies on the dollar.- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1"Thats what you get"? Isn't that a bit harsh?
- Gwencallon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0"That's what you get" lol
OK, I did build it myself ... but I don't know much about trouble-shooting. Nor do I have all the items I would need to figure out which of the brand new parts was DOA (It was the processor). I don't know how to maintain my own gaming system and I'm OK with that! :)
And I don't think there is a rule anywhere that says: Thou shalt not dip thy toe in to the PC Gaming Enthusiasts pool until thy knowest how to build and maintain thy rig already.- bigt8dogg, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Rule #242! ;)
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -3/+6To Gwencallon: As a tech I hate that this has happened to you more then the situation we are in. You are not alone in being left trying to find out how to get your personal property back. I don't know what to tell you. We debated at our store if the techs should take the customers systems home and contact them from there and we voted it best not too. However we techs all feel ***** for leaving your stuff in the stores. I am putting advertisements for tech services on the door of my ex-store today i wonder if the windows are going to be busted in and service computers will be gone.
- Matteos, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1As a customer at the Santa Clarita store, I feel bad for all you guys. To bad you didn't take the service machines with you, it would have been good for getting you customers for your repair business, I know I would have been very appreciative if my computer were in there but you called me saying you had it, you would have gained a customer for life.
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3The biggest reason we did not take them is because then the liability came on our heads and we could be personally sued for any damages or missing parts. It was a hard call but I think for our own families we made the best choice to leave them in the store.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Ya skylermoon and I worked at the same store. It was a hard decision. Damned if you do, damned if you dont. Just hard we had been blindsided, and time was not on our side. And definitely not on the customers side in this aspect. We all wish we could have done something more. But it's not that easy.
- Gwencallon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Well, I would have been extremely appreciative if someone had taken my PC to get it to me. But, I agree with your decision not to do so. You couldn't risk the personal liability.
But if any of you Santa Clarita guys hear some info about getting back in to get stuff or when the trucks are coming to take it all away, I would appreciate an email ;}~

PC Club closing stores; customers urged to pick up computers ASAP
03:08 PM PDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
By kgw.com Staff
A computer store is closing its Portland area locations and customers who brought their computers in for repair are urged to pick their computers up as soon as possible, an employee told KGW on Tuesday.
AP
Regional manager Jonas Fowler with the Tigard PC Club store said PC Club was sold to another entity a couple months ago and officials were setting up to liquidate the store but have now filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
He said employees were told to shut down all the stores Tuesday and not to come back on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Fowler -- who is now out of a job -- was trying to reach customers that have computers in the store so they can come pick them up since he doesn’t know what will happen Wednesday. - MASTERPL, on 05/14/2008, -3/+10Am I the only ex-employee that experienced racial discrimination? My AZ, Arrowhead location manager was asian, as was a second employee. I was treated like garbage despite my tech knowledge, experience, and ability to speak english clearly. Forced to mop the store, do the ***** part of inventory, and denied mgmt training (since the other asian with no tech knowledge and poor english was a better choice)
I thought, maybe it was all just a coincidence until I noticed a poster with the management tree leading to the top. It became all too clear that there was no future there.
I'm curious if anyone else was treated poorly for not being asian.- phelpsanator, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4I was the manager at one time for Phoenix and Mesa and I felt the same at times but not when papa jackson was around
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1It was probably just you. I was the ONLY Asian guy in my store. And I did not go to the management program.
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0You did not want to be a manager.. Which is good because your a damn good tech.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Well first of all they could not pay me enuff. Not to mention none of the other managers or even regionals while i was there ever really made me any offers. Maybe MK, but he knew I wouldnt take it.
- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0I totally agree. They didn't pay enough. I was only making 8.50 / hr + "commission" (which I never received, even though I exceeded quotas).
- HaMMeReD, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2As someone from Vancouver, asians (to be clear, asians == chinese, hong kong most likely) really think they are better then everyone else, so you won't get them to ever treat you with the proper respect you think that you deserve.
Although these same ***** are also good loyal workers. I got a asian working for me now, and he's great, no talkback or drama with that one. He's like a machine, and I know others as well. - computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0I am Caucasian, and I never really experienced discrimination; In fact I was going to be MTP (manager training program) at the AZAT store shortly before I quit. I did notice that a lot of management were Asian, but what do you expect from a company that was founded by Jackson Lan? I was an unofficial assistant manager at my store, and I had to mop, take out the trash, and do inventory every night in addition to the end of the month count. I agree that there was no future in working at PC Club, but couldn't there be other reasons that you weren't selected for MTP?
- xxx420xxx, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2OMG MASTERPL BEETLEJZ REPRESENT
- FRAGaLOT, on 05/14/2008, -2/+4This SUCKS! I guess they won't have clearance sales like CompUSA had, eh?
- HaMMeReD, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1If I understand they are going to be liquidated, so those doors will likely open again, and EVERYTHING including the nuts and bolts in the walls will be for sale.
- cquinnd, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2If it is like they handled the closing of past PC Club stores, the doors will never re-open, and you will have to figure out where the inventory was sent for liquidation to see if there are any deals.

I really understand how you feel. And i kinda think i know who you are. I was one of the Tech's from the Santa Clarita (LASA) store. I truely am sorry that it ended up this way. We had no notice about what was to happen yesterday until 1:00 PM. At that point we were rushing to get in contact with customers. This was an unsetting blow to customers and employee's alike.
And if you are who i think you are... Your rig is an amazing rig and i just wanted to tell you that. I truely had one of the most amazing computers i ever had the pleasure of working on- billygreen23, on 05/14/2008, -0/+7k, that got a little weird towards the end there.

- Gwencallon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0I'm not in to porn at all. But: Yeah. Like that. Or maybe for me: even better. lol
- psayre23, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4I walked in to the Tacoma PC-Club about 5pm yesterday and found most of it already cleared out. I talked to the guy moving boxes and even he seemed rather surprised that they closed.
- skylermoon, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0What do you mean it was cleared out?
- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -14/+12This just in: Company that nobody's ever heard of closes!
Who is "PC Club / Club IT" and why should we care? Those are two things that should be explained in the article. But they sure aren't.
Are they like a local small-time Best Buy?- Fidget253, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7PC Club was a privately-owned, United States-based chain of computer hardware stores established in City of Industry, California in 1992. The stores are located primarily in west-coast states and stock hardware and peripherals for PCs and complete computer systems assembled under the brand name Enpower. As of Tuesday, May 13, 2008 it is out of business and has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy
PC Club sold directly to both consumers and local resellers from inside 38 brick-and-mortar stores (as of July 2007) and on their website. They provided live tech support by phone, maintained an online forum and would answer questions through E-mail. In-store repairs and upgrades are available at all locations with an average turn-around time of 1-3 days[6].
Enpower
Enpower is the name brand for computer systems sold through PC Club for over 16 years. What makes Enpower systems different from many large distributors is that they are built from brand new , name-brand parts and they include a full-install copy of Microsoft Windows (rather than a recovery disc loaded with extra software).- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -6/+2So they're a local small-time best buy. And why should this be front-paged?

- Super6, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6They were more like a newegg that also had retail stores

- PStuart, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3Just don't digg it, that's all
- smacksaw, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5I don't think you really get it. PC Club was a significant company. You have to use your imagination. There are large computer stores, there is mail-order (usually connected to a smaller store) and then there are clone builders. PC Club were a small clone builder who managed to grow to a large chain of small stores. What they did was not possible with large stores because of the type of store they were.
PC Club brought a clone builder to many areas that had none. They brought competitors when they proved an area was viable. In places they had competitors, their leadership in both price and expertise kept others honest.
I would even go so far as to say that things like Newegg exist today because of places like PC Club. Why? Because PC Club and other clone builders created educated customers who would consider building/upgrading their own PC. They nurtured and supported them. CompUSA and Best Buy didn't do that. I ask you, who would buy from Newegg unless they already had some experience and knew what they were doing? There's a whole section of the computer using population out there right now who build their own systems without fear because of clone builders and PC Club was an influential business in the California cradle of system building - the home base. The Taiwan outside of Taiwan.- ZedX, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Whatever, I've still never heard of them.

- Rippleeffect, on 05/14/2008, -3/+5Well, this took a while to make it to the front page. I dugg this yesterday at about 3pm, but didn't comment.
Its a shame that pcclub's management failed their employees, and their customers. Despite the poor service recently, they will be missed. The closest pc store to me now would be Fry's over an hour away.
Walked into the local pcclub 15 minutes before they closed to build and emergency pc for my wife (WoW patch came out that day and we wanted to play that night) We walked out with a whole new pc in parts, only $100 more than I would have paid to order everything online. It was worth it though as I had her new system up and running within the hour.
RIP- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1You must have gotten a hell of a deal because almost all online retailers beat PC Club's price.
- kmiller2087, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2ive seen though if you really compare.. pc club did* pretty well at competing with online stores, and ALWAYS beat out best buy.
- MrWakeup, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0PC Club did good against B&M's on alot of things. But who can beat every online retailer?
Club IT on the other hand was beating new egg on lots of Items and other online stores.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Well...it wasnt the management of the stores...it was the higher ups at the corporate level.
- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1You must have gotten a hell of a deal because almost all online retailers beat PC Club's price.
- JavertHolmes, on 05/14/2008, -3/+23Does all of Digg work at PC Club?
- Fidget253, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3Quite Possible.. And Yes we are all kinda upset about this so we are venting
- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -3/+4Pretty sure the VAST majority of Diggers have never even heard of PC Club / Club IT and are just ignoring this. I'm trying to find out what the company was and why anyone would care enough to front-page this on Digg.
- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1How can you be upset when you have seen the writing on the walls for quite some time now aka all of the stores closing in Arizona except Mesa.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1BTW the closing of those stores was like....1-2 years ago. No writing on the walls there from that one...cuz that was oldddd news. And it was more than just those stores.
- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0Hence quite some time now...
- Pragmatyst, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0I'm pretty sure most on the West Coast serious enough about tech to build and upgrade their own systems know about PC Club. It was great for those last minute odds and ends components that Best Buy didn't have.

I am very sad to hear of this, too. I thought PC Club was a good company, but little did I know. (My hubby had worked for them for a little while, also.) I honestly would have rather had a computer built by them than ever, EVER buy one from DELL again. Jeebus.
I wish all of the former employees of this company well...

PC club was a huge chain of retails store all over the coutry. There were 38 stores total. If you have more questions wiki it.. It is there- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3Do you know how to use Digg? - Pragmatyst, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Worst Buy is for sheeple. As an IT pro, I cringe whenever I have to go to a dumbed down place like that. The PC Club staff has always been faily knowledgeable. Not to mention, it was very convenient-like my very own brick and mortar computer shopper. I liked being able to pick up stuff at the last minute without having to wait for snail mail.
- Lyph5, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Snail Mail? Who gets tech stuff shipped USPS? Who even SHIPS USPS?
Overnight. NewEgg. Their low prices pretty much make shipping free.

- CelticWonder, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0@ Fidget253 -- huge chain, lol... wiki it, ha... Until about two years ago, after 14 years of PC Club's existence, they didn't even have a wiki page until I created it for them.

- wanderson, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5PC Club wasn't perfect, but as far as computer stores in my area (Salt Lake City) went, it was a nice place to be able to go to pick up parts if I didn't want to wait for something to come from NewEgg. With CompUSA gone, I'm really left with places like BestBuy and CircuitCity charging insane amounts for components if I need something same-day. I'm pretty disappointed by this.
- Pragmatyst, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Exactly! I'm going to miss the convenience of the neighborhood computer chain. BestBuy and CircuitCity simply don't cut it when it comes to components.
- wacom01, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1wow this must be a LASA meet and greet i know you fidget253, (dus tech) and you just called me but i was on the other line. - phelpsanator, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3I was the Manager for Phoenix and then Mesa a while back and I am sad to see the company go down since Papa Jackson was around. He made the company and if he was still alive this would not have happened.
- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5I worked at the AZAT store in Phoenix from 2003-2004, and it was one of the worst jobs I have ever had. I went through about 4 manager changes, the daily inventory "cycle" counts were frustrating, and not to mention management implemented dishonest policies that encouraged sales associates to lie, and increase margins for the bottom line. The one good thing about working for PC Club was that I met a lot of different people working in the IT field, and when I quit, I landed a job as an IT consultant working for one of my prior frequent customers.
- cid2001, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6I was employed with PC Club when the good years were starting to fade at LASN. We still had Store sale incentive dinners and were selling high volume. I wore all hats I was a Salesman, Tech, and Manager in Training. I met with Jackson Lan Several times and found him a very inspirational person. Since his death PC Club went from bad to worse and I really feel for all of you that lost your jobs. Best of luck to you all.

- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -6/+3A digger who wants the PC Club / Club IT assholes to stop spamming the comments?
- nblsavage, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5It's a story about PC Club. Do you commonly go to threads and tell people to stop talking about the subject?
- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -5/+2They're ont discussing the subject, and that's the problem. They're offering computer support and giving out their phone numbers. Or talking about someone who stole $15k of stock a few years back.
- MrWakeup, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Maybe you should go digg a different article? And yes we are discussing the subjet...Subject is PC Club. CLub IT Closing. We're helping people understand what is going on with the close...and what PC Club and Club IT are about. How is what some of these people posting phone numbers...(if you really look, is only to the Lawyer for those who need to make some form of contact to get legal information)
So again maybe digg a different article....

- socialleper, on 05/14/2008, -4/+7I am also a former employee, and based on the names I see here I believe I have known or worked with some of the people who have commented here.
Yes the stores were closed suddenly and with little notice, but as a person that is legally and financially responsible for some $60k of inventory, there really is no other way to do this sort of thing. I would not fear that my staff would take advantage of the sudden chaos that ensued after that phone call, but larger stores or more questionable stores would quickly have a riot on their hands if they didn't act quickly. This is how these things happen; such as they are.
As the to legality of PC Club's practices, I can say I have never seen them do anything to the employees that was illegal; believe I checked. They sometimes raced to the bottom, despite the "Better Day Everyday Day" thing, of the labor laws, but stayed within the legal confines of what they could do. Do I doubt that if they could squeeze the employees for more, would they; no they take everything they could. However, I've worked in retail long enough to know that the beloved "free market" doesn't give a rats behind about laborers.
As to the performance of some of the upper management staff, there was an interesting mix of "do nothing" and "get all up in your a$$." An RM has been left nameless here at least visited stores and did his job, unlike others in the chain, but using intimidation, bullying, and brute force isn't a way to build a team. Scaring people into submission isn't a way to make actually care, just care enough to avoid being seen by his T-Rex like vision. The opposite of this was the non-communicative, distant, style of the HQ that wanted everything but never gave anything back. I worked for the company for a full year before a single person from HQ visited the store I was a salesperson at. It was like the boogie man had crawled out from under my bed and put on a blue polo shirt.
The best part was the co-workers and SOME of the customers. The worst part was the rest of the customers. Someone reading this may have been a jerk in one of our stores because they have that lame-a$$ "the customers always right" mentality. Before you go out and crap on someone's head because you can, I'd like to remind you that you would NEVER talk to someone like that on the street because any one of us would have loved to bust you in your know-nothing, can't find the on-switch, computer smells like an ash tray, I have money for an SUV but not a computer, I'm going to tell you how your business works, mouth. 90% of our customer were Awesome! 10% need to need eat a bag of man parts.
The Chapter 7 thing blows, but there was a good reason why I never started a 401(k). I am little ticked about the vacation time thing though.
I can only guess that one of three things caused this. One, the new owners are going to use the old PC Club inventory and infrastructure to open a new line of store. Two, there was never any new management and this was a cover story to quietly shut us down. Three, the old executives were up to something shady and didn't give the new owners accurate information, so when they took over they drowned in mess they left behind.
Oh well :(- seacaptainn, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3What are you talking about when you say "there really is no other way to do this sort of thing" ? What about CompUSA? They announced their closure well in advance, did what was needed with the inventory, and gave their employees plenty of notice so they could find new jobs. There is definitely more than one way to go out of business, and some are more graceful than others.
- smacksaw, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1CompUSA set up liquidation first and had the money to continue. PC Club simply expired at once and needed to protect it's assets (inventory) for a liquidator when the court would/could appoint one. Meaning CompUSA had the resources to do it while PC Club hung on until the bitter end with no resources at all.
- socialleper, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1PC Club was a privately owned family business that didn't have back up resources to handle this properly. Like I said there is a real possibility that the previous executives were not completely honest with the vendors, employees or new owners about how bad the situation was and just wanted out. They saw a sucker and got out. I have seen some information that, if accurate, makes me think that one of the new owners felt betrayed by the deal.
Without having worked there, it's hard for you to understand how "alone" the stores were and how dangerous for the inventory this situation was.
- skylermoon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1only 60k this must be ORSL speaking..
- CelticWonder, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1@ socialleper -- You're spot on about the RM and HQ mentality you describe, as well as most of what you said about the company, the co-workers, and the customers. Three reasons why I quit a month before all this happened: 1) the low pay (and fortunately, I got my vacation pay as little as it was as a result of leaving before the sh*tstorm), 2) saw it coming, and 3) that 10% of the know-it-all tools that passed in and out of the front door you mentioned, sometimes daily. I just couldn't take it anymore, and after that certain he-who-must-not-be-named RM took over and blew the f*ck out of morale in the stores he commanded, it wasn't a fun place to work anymore. I've been in retail 8.5 years (PC Club was three of those), and I didn't get involved with the 401(k) of either company for the same reason you avoided it.
I must say you are quite wrong about one thing though, my friend -- companies go down with a successful "going out of business" sale all the time without worrying about their employees stealing everything. Why? Selfish ol' PC Club couldn't possibly have time to care about their $8.50/hr employees if they saw them all as potential thieves that they had to pull the rug out from under without warning. When Jackson Lan passed on and his brother took over, Jeff Lan ruined the company. He's nothing but a weasel when he drops the chain from 60 stores to nearly 40 overnight in February 2007 without any warning to faithful employees (which included management trainees that were designated for those stores). And to be bluntly honest, anytime closures were rumoured, you helped perpetuate the false hope that a failing store and chain could stay opened by essentially calling liar on the source(s) of the information, claiming that the knowledge would "scare the employees". Yes, I know you were in the dark too, but come on... Fair warning to look for another (dare I say BETTER) job ahead of a sinking ship would've been much more helpful than being unemployed, right? So I still have an unanswered paradox for you: When LAGT then LADN closed, could we really have been on that list of closures also and then did we maybe save ourselves at the time by taking such a rumor to heart, of course then unknowingly playing off PC Club's worrisome view of its employees?
ANY one of your three theories about "the end" could very well be valid. :o) Oh well. Good riddance to yet another company that didn't really care about their employees after all (at the upper-management level, anyway).- techlyc, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Goodness, I remember being called upon to help clean up some sort of inventory/management mess at LAGT in the early/middle of 06. Three days of no employees, and about twenty to thirty machines in the Tech Area with no notes .... and they opened the doors to the public. *Shudder*
BTW the downsizing Jeff did had to be in Feb/Mar 06, as I left in September of that year.
Also: kinda nice that they cannot censor us here on Digg, like they tried to do a few times on the Intranet. Rawr.

- LoudMusic, on 05/14/2008, -3/+8Who the hell is PC Club? I've never heard of them. Are they like CompUSA? Those bastards went out of business too. Horrible terrible really really bad service. Thousands of stories, no need to retell mine here.
But I have to ask, are Circuit City and Best Buy going to follow? Circuit City isn't known for being great, and I've heard bad things about Best Buy even though I've never had a bad experience.- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3PC Club was a retail computer store chain that had stores all across the US. It was started by a man named Jackson Lan, who died several years ago. Ever since Jackson's death, the store chain had gone downhill drastically.
- Lyph5, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3All across the US? Except that nobody's posting about them except former employees. Clearly they were an industry giant.
- computerguydk, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2The reason that former employees are posting is because they got screwed. How would you feel if you just showed up to work one day, and found the doors locked, and a sign saying "We have filed for chapter 7, and by the way, no compensation for vacation hours"?
- smacksaw, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3You have as many posts in here as any employee, yet you are bitching about spamming this thread? You must be the one Digging everyone down.

- DeucesWild, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I had never heard about PC Club before this thread either! I always buy from newegg, frys or microcenter. Though microcenter is always near empty when i go so im wondering how long they can last.
- cquinnd, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1You must not be near the microcenter in Denver, CO.
- DeucesWild, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1No the one in Tustin, CA. Though I was just in Denver (well Aurora) for business wish I knew there was a microcenter there because I ended up needing something.

- aacidusX, on 05/14/2008, -4/+1imagine all the free hardware employees have taken home!!
- socialleper, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1The smart managers immediately sent their staff home to avoid this. The dumb ones may have tried something, but I'm sure they'll hear about it later. PC Club didn't know anything about advertising, but knew a lot about accounting and lawyers.
- munawarali2, on 05/14/2008, -2/+9What's PC Club? We only have Bestbuy in Canada.

No, wait, just bestbuy sorry my bad.
My favorite place is ncix. They are online in the US and Canada, and at least in the vancouver area they have a fair bit of storefronts around. They have good prices, good service, and they carry absolutely everything. Lots of cools ***** you would never see at a Best Buy.
