- arniebuteft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+109Is this thing vaporware? I've been hearing about it for years it seems...
- DaveMode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+98He should just sell the rights/patents for the thing to a major ahrdware manufacturer and get it over with.
- AWBoy666, on 10/12/2007, -4/+75This is honestly one of the most disappointing things I have heard in a long time :(
I feel like a kid just died. I was so excited for this device...... - shredomatic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+75Didn't they release a 3 key version with color for $100?
At $33 a key it would be $3399. For a keyboard. You could get a 19" LCD touchscreen and use that instead for $1000, and still have $2000 left over for blackjack and hookers.
Actually, forget the blackjack. - wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+66As you can see reactions aren't exactly mixed so far. To be fair they have not *yet* decided to use either FTSN or OLEDs yet, so it may still be colour.
However, all indications of feature snipping lead me to believe that it will not be.
It goes far beyond not being in color either, it won't even be gray scale. FTSN, to my knowledge, is monochrome. - cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46I'm really surprised another (more disciplined) company hasn't developed this by now considering the intense interest it seems to generate every time they hiccup. Logitech, Microsoft (god forbid I ask them for anything) are you listening?
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+48Is it still going to be compatible with my Phantom console?
- linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45I'm sure once this comes out, you will see clones much like it. Maybe cheaper and designed better? We can only hope.
- Spinney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47im done with this keyboard
disappointment after disappointment
as my mom always said if you can't do it right don't do it at all - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43and forget the LCD!
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -11/+48Three reasons why this product will fail:
1) Requires its own power supply
2) Not wireless
3) Too expensive - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41I think it's more of a "status symbol" than anything else. If you have a keyboard with LCD keys, you're the geekiest of the geek.
- puzzlesource, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34somehow this reminds me of the story behind the awesome gaming console that was the Infinium Phantom
- skotski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Ooooh...neato.
- Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2995% of diggers disagree with you!
- tkcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23This is what happen when a company other than Logitech and Microsoft produces a very technologically advanced keyboard. Ambition just doesn't match with reality.
I hope Logitech steals their ideas. - bofhcabbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24noots:
Without the actual depressing of the keys, you'd start to hurt your fingertips pretty quickly. The key depression is really important and you'll learn that really quick if you try out that laser keyboard or whatever, that's projected onto any flat surface. Ow. - contextclouds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24No, unfortunately.
But you can map all of your weapons on Duke Nukem Forever to the Optimus and they'll have the proper icons. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Does anyone really look at their keyboard enough to need this type of device?
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21ooh, what if you automated that software, so when you make the changes it went DIRECTLY to the keyboard? maybe using some sort of light emitting display, so you could still see it in the dark? (patent pending)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/
Keyboard with LCD keys. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Uh, lose them sales this year? How about seeing the product delivered to stores before discussing sales?
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21@skotski
you must be new here - every story for the last 6 months seems to have been on either apple, ubuntu or this keyboard...... - linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm most interested in the pricing because of all the new developments with this model.
- twisterX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17That mini 3 is the new version of this.
http://www.kiwassee.org/new_microsoft_keyboard.jpg - superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17ehh, just gonna hafta wait for the Optimus'-103
hehehe - tkcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Let's the massive undigg of http://www.digg.com/hardware/Optimus_Keyboard_February_1st_ begins!
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@noots
Touch screens have limited appeal, especially with people like myself who touch type. I've used a variety of touch screens over the years in all sorts of applications. Really useful, but not practical if you want to type for oh... say six or more hours.
If it came down to it, I'd rather have the multi-touch screen that appeared here on Digg several times and combine it with my trusty Logitech keyboard if I needed to do a lot of typing. - smpdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12As much as I laughed about the "geek bling bling" there are so many uses for this kind of keyboard, not only for bilingual users with diferent alphabets like japanese, cyrillic, hebrew and western alphabets, but to use it with specific apps, just imagine switching to photoshop and every key becomes the specific tool it belongs to, press type, and then every key goes back to letters and so on, video editing users, games, even websites.
- TheCasablancan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I dunno Noots,
Don't you think that touch typing might be difficult? Though they could just have two small bumps in the middle of the touchscreen. - Hensworth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Meh, I dont really care if this thing even comes out, it's been forever since it was announced.
- phej, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The 3 key version used OLEDs, the full keyboard was going to use colour LCDs to reduce the price and they have stated that it would cost about the same as a good cell phone ($350-$400). A bit much for a keyboard, but if it was colour (and re-added the 10 function keys) it would be well worth it.
- farazyashar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/
they just lost my money. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10They will, in like 5 years when it's feasible.
- fyngyrz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Cr*p. I was prepared to pay quite handsomely for a bright, color, programmable keyboard, as much as a grand. It appears that the high end functionality of this has deliquesced into a pool of worthless uber-crud due to lack of vision on the part of the developers. First LCD instead of OLED, then greyscale, finally monochrome. No thanks.
Furthermore, the fact that this critical a part detail is still being considered at this late stage clearly indicates that the "pre-orders" at the end of 2006 are *really* pre-orders... meaning, you're not going to see your keyboard until deep into 2007, if even then.
Well, the good news is that surely someone will take the idea and run with it after seeing the excitement the original concept generated. Probably someone in China, laughing maniacally at the entire idea of "intellectual property" the whole time they produce it. And it'll cost $100. After being marked up for retail. :) - arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10There are numerous applications for something like this that have yet to be thought of - Entirely new elements of game play which would incorporate the keyboard's ability to change what was displayed on the keys dependent on what was happening in the game, for instance.
And, as 'adamsucks' noted, it would pretty much bestow the geek-crown upon the owner while the novelty lasted.
I would personally find it uber-geeky to have each key change from blue to neon-orange as it was pressed... When keyboards will have to come with epileptic-seizure warnings, the world will be truly great place. ^_^
It seems I'm gonna put my crown on hold until a color version is released, though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But the question is, how can you show off the keyboard? I'm sure once your mom went to see it in your basement, that will be the last time someone else looked at it.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10bummer. basically, they took a great idea and killed it one step at a time.
- bofhcabbit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14God no, it's total geek bling.
BUT IT'S SHINY GEEK BLING DAMMIT! - Spanca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I can't wait. This is going to be THE keyboard to play Duke Nukem Forever with!
- Er0z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder how many people missed your joke.
- copilot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So much hype for so little actual coolness. I'd be happy if I never read another piece of news about this phantom keyboard that sucks more and more as time goes by.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sure, the keyboard looks cool...but $250+ for a frigging keyboard? Come on.
I'd rather have good tactile response than a mushy keyboard with pretty lights on it.
I want a stainless-steel keyboard with backlit keys, two usb ports, a small footprint, and dishwashing-machine washability. We can make digital cameras that can go underwater, why not a keyboard? - BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yea, where are the REAL keyboard makers? I bet MS could take this concept and develop it into an amazing ergo keyboard...and it would get way more built-in support from them.
- dragoneye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7or the Nintendo Wii
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Renamed: Pessimus 103
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No left side shortcut/macro keys, I can deal with that.
Some keys don't even have screens, they're just backlit? That was distressing.
Now the keys aren't even in color? They've now stripped away nearly every reason why the Optimus was cool. - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10It's like Windows Vista in keyboard form. But crappier.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Why would you want a keyboard that you had to look at in order to use? That just doesn't make sense to me."
That's what I said last time this keyboard came up. Here's a better keyboard:
http://www.daskeyboard.com/ - xeroskill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Step 1: Monochromatic
Step 2: Restart to change key's.
Step 3: Keys need to be replaced every 6 months.
.....
Way to let us down.... mine as well not release it at all imo. -
