NOT!"
Hello 1990... - BionicBeefpile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33That comment is backward-compatible with the original NES
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34alot? well i guess if you're living off your parent's allowance.
- nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28It comes out on a Sunday?
- BionicBeefpile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26My only thought is that Nintendo wanted everyone to play a game that really showed what the system could do. If they sold the console for $200, and you bought a 3rd party game with a poor interface to use with your new toy, you might get jaded in a hurry. This method gives them a bit more control over the "first impression".
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29I'd rather a $200 system and the ability to pick my own game.
- Mazgazine1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27uhh, $60 bucks for a full controller??!?!! friggin OUCH.. I thought Xbox 360 controllers were steep....
grrh, its gonna take a lot of cash, assuming no one buys the system. I DO like he fact that it gets a game with it! YEAH! - SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28The Wii announcement is such a letdown......
NOT!
This looks great. The pricing on NES, SNES, and N64 games are prefectly acceptable. I can't wait to sit this thing next to my 360.
One other note. I'm going to take a Wii to my Grandpa's home and have him try out some of the games. He is now living in a nursing home and doesn't have much activity. If some of these games can appeal to him, it would be one more thing to bring him enjoyment. I am also hoping, just as Nintendo is, that the Wii will turn into a real family activity. The more people that stop seeing gaming as a fringe activity, the more people will tell politicians to STFU on gaming regulation. - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The NES sold for $200 in 1986. That's $350 in today's dollars....
- mattb19us, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20That's awesome!! November 19th is my birthday... I guess I'm buying myself a present this year!!!
- GyroLC, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22The best news: bundled games
- velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I wouldn't call wii sports a $50 game...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Everything else plays ***** DVD's, even your coffee maker. So it doesn't matter if it comes with one or not for me...
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I'm amazed at how many people seem disappointed by the price. Consider:
Wii - $250 + Extra controllers $120 + 2 More games $100 = $470
360 - $400 + Extra controllers $150 + 2 More games $120 = $670
PS3 - $600 + Extra Controllers $150 + 2 More Games $120 = $870
This is assuming you want 4 controllers right off the bat. Also add into the value of the Wii that Wii Sports is included. You end up with 3 Wii games. XBox Live has a fee as well. I still say the Wii is a tremendous value. And these are CONSERVATIVE estimates. Here in PA, sales tax is 7% - So, $502.90 for the Wii, $716.90 for the 360, and the PS3 is $930.90. None of the systems require Hi-Def, the Wii is the only one to abandon it, and the PS3 is set to embrace it fully... So, consider that it is a good idea to upgrade to HD for the 360, and highly recommended for the PS3, add on the cost of that kind of hardware and you've got a mammoth investment. - velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14NO DVD Playback link:

- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Sorry, No PS3's allowed at the Wii party. Or... Did you mean an actual George Foreman Grill?
- Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Remember Japan likes Launching things in the USA on a Sunday whether it's a game console or an Attack.
- pedro101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Wii Sports will include boxing, bowling, golf, tennis, baseball, and possibly some airplane game. That's 6 games that come with the system. Plus a $60 controller.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Dear God! This looks like THE system to have. It will most definitely be a staple in my living room.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11And my family paid around $2500 for a middle-line IBM PC at the time. Nowdays I can get a comparibly positioned PC for $1000. What does that say?
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Just think $250 is a little too much for what you're actually getting - a gamecube with a motion sensor controller."
Oh please. Give me a ***** break. Wii is NOT a GameCube. It's significantly more powerful. The GPU was built from the ground up, and known bottlenecks in the GC architecture have been eliminated. Calling Wii a "GameCube with a motion sensor controller" is like calling Pentium IV a "286 with more MHz".
I personally think $250 is too high, but don't give me the "Wii is nothing but a GC" nonsense. - beforeIforget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Doesn't $250 seem a bit more than was expected for this console? I was hoping this would be $200-$250 for the console and 2 of the Wiimotes with chucks... and maybe no game. Now, in order to really get a good "out of box experience" you need to buy the console $250, another controller $60, plus a $50 game (if you don't want Sports). You're now at $360 + tax which puts you close to $400 or so. This is not nearly the impulse buy (loosely speaking) that it seemed at first. I'll probably still get one, but I gotta think a bit harder about it now.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10From TFA:
"Games are downloaded and stored internally, and become their own channel in the menu." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12The good thing about coming out on a sunday..employers won't have to worry about their workers skipping a day to camp out in front of best buy.
So who's throwing the wii-gate party? I'll bring the foreman grill, you bring the generator :D - shit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Mii Channel looks amazing. Lord knows I spend hours ***** off in the character editor of video games making people I know. And now those people can live in my Wii.
- ectocooler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8who's taking preorders??
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7[stupid no "less than" sign]
Ha, true, so would I. But we can see why Nintendo did this. Both from a cost standpoint (since Wii Sports' aggregate cost is less than $10, this is more akin to a $240 console and a $10 game), but also because they want to get this console in the hands of nontraditional gamers. A lot of gamers are fine with paying hundreds of dollars for a machine, and then $50 for games. But if you've got an older guy who heard this thing might be fun for his kids, spending $250 on a piece of equipment that does _nothing_* when you power it on sounds kind of dumb. If you're dropping that kind of cash, you should be able to play _something_ Christmas morning. It sure worked well for those of us that remember when NES debuted. The Nintendo wasn't *just* the console - it was a chance to play Mario and Duck Hunt, with the ability to buy limitless games in the near future.
*OK, I'm sort of kidding, because the Wii does have more functionality out-of-the-box than most consoles, and you can download games/content, but you'll have to pay extra for the games. Without bundling Wii Sports, you'd have a $250 dealie that can play nothing without opening your wallet. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@ UberC
So I guess you're still stuck in the PS1/N64 era? - velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8great news about the pack-in! although I was hoping for $200-$220, I should've known better. ZTTP will make everything worthwhile...
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Thank You. I have over 6 dvd players in my house. that doesnt bother me. i think everyone has more than 3 dvds in the house hold now a days.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I think Gamecube came out on a Sunday.
Also, this story has already been posted a number of times. - velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Funny, reading your post I thought I might've posted it as my girlfriend is the same way. She's addicted to DS - trauma center especially. It's all about eliminating an intimidating controller! Everyone can figure out a touch screen (I'd hope) and it won't get much easier than point & click on the Wii!!
- relay01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The gaming machine that played pong came out for 200 dollars back in the 70's... The 250 dollar price tag for a next gen console compared to the consoles costing twice as much... I don't see as a huge problem... If only I just had more time to play. Though this might get my girlfriend more into gaming with me. I showed her my DS and she fell in love with games like Trauma Center. Any console that can get my girl to play with me (in more ways than one) I can't help but love.
- velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5what multiplayer games will require the use of both the wand and the nunchuck for both players? Tennis is just the remote/wand.
- vawksel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It really is good news.
Can you imagine if on launch day, all the games sold out, or the "good ones", and you were stuck with a bad game or even worse, NOTHING? Maybe historically it hasn't happened, but who knows.
Second of all, if you bought a crappy 3rd party game, that didn't work very well, your impression of the new system controller design might not be what Nintendo wants you to have.
There is also this idea for a lot of parents that buy this system for their kids for Christmas that they want it to come with a game. It makes them feel better about their purchase, and takes out the decision making in what game to buy. I've seen a lot of parents standing in the Nintendo isles of stores across America asking strangers as they walk by "hey, please help me what do I buy my 7 year old kid".
Also, don't think of the Sports game as $50, because I'm sure at some point when they start selling the system stand alone, the price will probably drop by $10 or $15 at the most, if it drops at all. Then you guys will all be complaining the 'wonderful' sports game no longer comes with the system. - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I take preorders.
Send me the money, and I'll see if I can deliver later. - Swamphhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What I want to know is what type of cable they are going to pack-in for AV. Will component be available out of the box? If not will it be readily available as an add on?
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Commander Keen FTW!
- mbromley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6$250 bucks is dirt cheap, some people really need to get jobs or understand manufacturing and designing these products cost money. Not to mention all the support website, ads etc.
Its sad seeing people say "Well that confirms it. I'm getting a cheapo ps2 and holding off a year or so for next-gen."
$250 = 2 dinner/movie dates with a girl if your lucky. Buying a Nintendo gives you 100's of hours of entertainment. - almack64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah I'm hoping that wii will bring my wife back to the gaming world. I was freaked to learn a feel months ago that she used to be hooked to old school mario and donkey kong country. I think gaming together could only strengthen our marriage... Or least it will help more games to be in the house. She is pretty competitive.
- goostoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That pricing could be fair. Five dollars for simple, short games would be a rip off. But I wouldn't mind paying $5.00 for Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Even $10.00 for OOT or Mario 64. If it's a quality game that you can get a lot of play out of, the prices are great. When you start putting bargain bin junk, like Bebe's Kids (http://www.goodtimeretrocafe.com/snes/bebe.html) or Where's Waldo (http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/w20-12.htm), you're in trouble.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Supposedly F.Y.E. will take preorders in person... google it, if interested.
- pedro101, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12It's a $200 system with a $50 game, so the price tag makes perfect sense. Not a bad deal at all.
- almack64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah i just bought a used Gamecube for $40 its been a great investment and next year when i finally pick up we i won't have to buy the classic controllers assuming the GN controllers can be used for VC too... Has anyone heard any info on that.
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't see why you would need Component. S-Vid would be more than enough...
