- covracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Props to Neuros for the umpteenth time for embracing the hacker ethic and free software ideology.
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"Bounty Details
Code your own improvements into the Open Source Neuros OSD firmware and get a cash reward.
From Neuros:
"These bounties are a community style thing that is just a modest way to put a little money back into the Neuros community as a token for our appreciation. We hope and expect for people to collaborate, split bounties and credit and share information, etc. The deliverables and rules are sketchy and the interpretation is completely subject to the whim of the selection committee"

Have fun coders! - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8 $229. But it looks like its already doing more things then the "iTV" will.

Sadly, they're sold out. - Patented, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The company is paying OSS developers rewards for writing applications that will enable this device to access youtube, google, flikr, voip, etc...
Unlike the dazzle, which only acts as a device enabling a person to capture video, this device will be able to capture video, play it back, surf the web, and probably a few other things once the dust settles on the development floor. - smartssa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5... Except for digital output. :(
- gravedigga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5penis?
- Patented, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So it's essentially an Open Source version of the Dazzlebox with Network and storage capabilities?
SWEET! - kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How big is 720x480@30fps mpg4 content with 44.1kHz 16bit audio per minute?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why be limited by an internal drive? When the USB host features get fixed and are stable then you can hook up any sized external drive you wish.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't see it as being limited. I would record to the internal drive and move the files afterwards. External isn't a good idea because I don't want to put about 15 boxes under my TV! If it was all in one unit it would look nicer, and use less power supplies.
- escoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I totally agree.. Adding and internal harddrive to this would make it automatically become the best option for a home server/nas/dvr.
Not everyone needs 1Tb of space on the network.. One internal harddrive is enough for me. - Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would rather it was a bit bigger and had an internal hard drive. How good is it at switching channels on STBs?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That small huh?
- jdoscher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only place left to get these is Ebay, the 200 ran out online in a matter of hours!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3w00t! I have one. I need a chance to try it out though.
- axxiom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Making the drive storage external eliminates a bulky AC converter unit.
They are asking the customer, why pay for something you probably already own? Furthermore, what is stop the OSS community from creating code that would allow you to record directly to a DVD burner in a USB storage encasing?
External storage is a way of literally thinking outside the box so the customer can take advantage of whatever current storage options they maintain. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only negative I can see about it is that it doesn't support HD video (720x480 maximum).
Other than that, it's basically the perfect device. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice to have a device that allows HD passthrough and recording just incase the broadcast flag issue is pushed down our throats again. It would also allow backups of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray media.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1don't know much about the Neuros_OSD then check out
http://wiki.neurostechnology.com/index.php/Neuros_OSD - Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read the article, but I'm still not sure what this is? How is this diffrent from something like Dazzle, or another capture device?
- Laser1234543, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ThinkGeek does say that they will be getting the final production version in mid october.

Thats to the Offical site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is my one issue as well, HD support...
- bowdie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This may be what I've been looking for. I need something like a slingbox, that I can plug into the output of my tivo downstairs, and take it to an upstairs TV (and in another room - PC) without having to put a PC in the bedroom.
Something like a slingbox with recieve and either RGB or s-video out would be perfect.
Unless anyone here knows something that exists to do this already... - axxiom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do folks not take RF remotes seriously?
RF is a thousand times better than IR. X10 still makes one that you can tamper with and it's only $30. - fatas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any sources/proof
- escoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1External USB harddrives are not replacemetns for internal disks.. USB harddrives can't be turned off when they're not being used, for example.. That means lower life span, which means lower reliability..
A power supply is not bad when you're putting this by your tv..
an internal hd would also make this a lot more "hackable" (nas, web server, mail server...) and would make this a viable option to a much larger comunity (linksys nslu2, kurobox, and so on). - edsonmedina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope. It doesnt have any internal storage. You can connect a external usb hard drive or memory card if you want.
- georgemoore13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, at least any decent 1GB card can.
Check this out.

These cards usually get a couple MB/s if I remember correctly. - Hostile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have one of these as well! They are great little devices! The hardware at this point is just stunning and the software is around a pre-alpha state. It's getting there, every release crushes some bugs. It's great to see linux on an embedded device like this, it definitely makes it more powerful.
- bboons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather have this box not make any disk noise and be lighter and use less power. For storage I would prefer to use my home NAS box (via 802.11g) sitting else where making all the noise it wants. I'm assuming of course that this Neuros can use NAS.
- akhlaing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Interface is "Cons" for the device. where is D1 or iLink connectors, leave alone HDMI for this high-resolution age?
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know, so someone fill me in.
Can a CF card access quick enough to play back video? - seuaniu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"How big is 720x480@30fps mpg4 content with 44.1kHz 16bit audio per minute?"
Lets see. Coming from an mp2 at 720x480x32 at 6000kb/s video, using Pinnacle Studio 10.5 (which I definitely do not recommend, try Sony Vegas for a cheap video editor on windows), and putting out an mp4 at 720x480 at 3800kb/s, 128kb/s audio at 44.1kHz, 16 bit stereo, a one minute video takes up 28MB space on an ntfs drive, and looks almost as good as the source video. - PhantomScreed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Neuros have a HORRIBLE track record of selling stuff that doesn't work, and then abandoning the project and walking away from their unhappy customers. They talk a good game with the OSS stuff but their gear is junk.
- lastingdamage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In one word. Topfield 5800 PVR, no HD. Dual Tuners .. ok that's more than one word. I've got one it's awesome. Google for it you lazy suckers. USB File System mount. Here's the forum where all the juicy hacking takes place. http://www.toppy.org.uk/.
Share and Enjoy. - kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just curious how much video I can fit onto @ 1gig CF card. :P
