This made me giggle. - 2Deluxe, on 06/27/2009, -7/+58THATS WHAT SHE SAID.
- dmcaudio, on 06/26/2009, -5/+54less than 12" is a netbook. 12" - 17" is a notebook. 17" - 20" is a monstrosity.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -2/+49notebook, netbook, laptop, same diffrence! I really dont care what it's called.
- kleon777, on 06/27/2009, -6/+49Take it into a cafe. If the girls laugh at you, it's a netbook.
- tomato1324, on 06/27/2009, -1/+29who really cares what it's called? buy the damn thing based on what you want in a computer, not based on a dumb label that really doesn't mean much to begin with.
- bbhill, on 06/27/2009, -2/+28i take my 12 inches into cafes all the time and girls usually just scream for me. . . idk what i'm doing wrong
- voodoo123x, on 06/27/2009, -0/+19Laptops over 16 inches are being referred to as "Desktop Replacements". And rightly so.
- IneffablePolk, on 06/27/2009, -2/+15Netbook is just a marketing term. It doesn't have a real definition. It's a lot like web 2.0.
- Sockdude, on 06/27/2009, -1/+13I thought "netbook" was the term used to describe inexpensive notebooks starting with the OLPC XO-1 that were used predominantly for browsing the net, hence the name. It doesn't mean a small notebook; that's what a UMPC is.
- lusenok2, on 06/27/2009, -0/+12Netbooks don't have DVD drives.
- B1665r, on 06/27/2009, -0/+12It is zdnet, they are trolling to incite nerd rage... That is what they do.

If it has the computing power of my 7 year old desktop, its a Netbook.
If it has the computing power of my 3 year old desktop, its a laptop.
If it has the computing power of my 1 year old desktop, it cost $4,200. - brandnewx, on 06/27/2009, -0/+9Once upon a time, consumers were confused with laptop or desktop. Confusion reigns at 20 lbs. - evanft, on 06/27/2009, -2/+10I wanted the first reply to be "That's what she said"
- mrBitch, on 06/27/2009, -1/+8RE: " .. girls usually just scream for me."
.. girls usually just scream *at me.
There, fixed that for you. - WordFlyer, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5a computer by any other name....
- deadbaby, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5Pretty easy to figure out. Ultra portable 12" laptops with decent (non-Atom class) processors are typically $1k+ and often more. Any 12" under $500 is obviously a netbook.
- TheInformer, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5I've stayed up many nights worrying about whether my machine is a netbook or a notebook.
- Duffle, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5The Vaio TT is not a netbook.
- KibibyteBrain, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5I don't think the size matters as much as the portability. A notebook to me is a portable computer that requires a customized case to be portable. Then there are netbooks and ultraportables, with netbooks being made carryable via downgraded specs and ultraportables made carryable via expensive engineering. You should also be expected to be able to use a netbook/ultraportable in most any setting where you can sit down, unlike my 15" notebook which doesn't do too well on restaurant tables, or in coach seats on an airplane.
It is really hard to make something fall into this category without being small, but it just depends. I imagine eventually notebooks will fold up even more, which will make gauging their portability on screen size even tougher. - sockpuppets, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5Dell Studio: John Holmes Edition™
- CarzorStelatis, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4Netbook: Cheaper, lighter, better battery life, uses integrated graphics and an Intel Atom (or other manufacturer's equivalent) grade CPU
Notebook: More expensive, heavier, still uses integrated graphics and still can't do any of the heavy duty tasks that a netbook can't. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4e-penis
- toxiccrusader, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4If it is 12" and has no optical drive than it is a netbook.
- brandnewx, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4Portable computer.
- inactive, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4@ThraxyWaxy, at first I read kleon777's post that way, too. Then I reread it, and he might have just been saying that just because a lot of girls carry a certain kind of thing doesn't mean they wouldn't laugh if they saw a guy carrying that thing. Purses were just an example of that. So, it's possible he meant that and actually wasn't talking about carrying netbooks in purses.
- inactive, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4Sub-notebook
- or3n, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3i can see it now..
"my netbook is 10 inches 'diagonal' *wink* wink*" - Skuzzlbut, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3There are some ultra-portables under $1K - like the new HP dv series:
http://collegecandy.com/2009/06/25/ultra-portable- ... - Spire3660, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3The biggest dividing line is Microsoft's retarded ram and PCI-E limitations on 'small notebooks' otherwise known as netbooks
- inactive, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3That definition would actually include smartphones and low power desktops/servers, and there are ARM-based netbooks as well.
My definition of netbook is <12", inexpensive, low-end specs, and primarily designed for basic Internet usage. - tnoy, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3I have a sub-netbook. :(
- wizkid32, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3Under 12" is a Netbook 15" is an Notebook 12-15" should be an Ultra portable computer.
- chrislewis, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3Atom / Nano / ARMv7 = netbook
Athlon neo is a tough call though - kleon777, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3I'll bet many of the girls carry purses. That doesn't mean they won't laugh at a guy carrying one.
- Youlovemoney, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3actually i think they throw in he term NETBOOK so they can have less features as a NoteBook and still cost the same.. "look its cuter" for your "on the go" lifestyle.. but cant really do much at all... and still sell em for 400-600$
come on now. - fuzzybad, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2Girth is more important than length. Oh, I mean weight is more important than screen size!
- thisthatwhat, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2crippled notebook w/ long battery life = netbook (but really just a stripped notebook)
integrated screen and keyboard w/ touch pad and usually weaker than desktop performance = notebook - sinembarg0, on 06/27/2009, -1/+3So my Asus EEE 900 isn't a netbook (it has a celeron, atom wasn't out yet)?
Terrible definition. - LotosDescendant, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2Nah, girls think they're cute like puppies and babies.
- Technopundit, on 06/27/2009, -1/+3This is the most pointless argument I have ever heard of.
- Elranzer, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2Has an Intel Atom processor = netbook
That's basically the only definition of it. - poppyfire, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2When I think of a netbook, I think of a full work day's worth of battery life and (as mentioned above me) portability. That's what I'm looking for- energy efficiency.
