- Equinox1, on 03/23/2009, -1/+481I pity the fool who buys Monster Cables. Real men use HDMI cables from Monoprice.

This all adds up to the extra 5.7 million percent price increase over a generic monoprice hdmi cable which works just as well for a fraction of the cost - inactive, on 03/23/2009, -1/+186I am really sick of Monster cables. There should be more comparison tests out there between no-name HDMI cables and Monsters
- serif69, on 03/23/2009, -5/+176Coat hangers.
- Insightful, on 03/23/2009, -0/+156Not as much of a scam compared to the Denon AK-DL1 - 1.5m of cat-5 ethernet cable for $499.

Check out the review of Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AKDL1-Dedicated-Link-C ...
"A caution to people buying these: if you do not follow the "directional markings" on the cables, your music will play backwards. Please check that before mentioning it in your reviews. "
"Solved Global Warming Locally, "
"I installed one of these cables between my gigabit ethernet switch and my Canon Pixma 6700 color printer. I know it's not a sanctioned use, but I was looking for the ultimate in speed and color fidelity. I'm freaky that way.
The first time I downloaded a picture to the printer over this cable, the bits moved so fast the printer collapsed into a naked singularity, right there in my office. " - pHr34kY, on 03/23/2009, -1/+145They're essentially data cables. There's no difference in picture quality. It's like getting a monster ethernet cable and claiming that it streams better quality video from your media center box.
People used to fall for this when they were making CD-Rs "designed" for Audio (and charging $7 per disc) - claiming there was a better sound quality. It was all a quack. - Nephersir7, on 03/23/2009, -4/+137Just because you dont know much about tech doesnt mean you're stupid and deserve to be scammed.
But on the other hand, you should make some research before shelling out $200+ on a ***** cable.
Oh, and BTW, ***** Monster, Belkin, Best Buy/Future Shop, Fry's, The Source, etc
Why would I pay $200 for a 13.1 ft 6.68Gbps quality Monster cable http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon ...
When I can get a 15ft. 10.2Gbps higher-quality cable for less than $30 (shipping to Canada included) at Newegg? http://link-depot.com/images/hdmi_1pt3_f4_big.jpg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - yairagat, on 03/23/2009, -3/+107I say Sue 'Em .
But on another note - If you don't know anything about HDTV and/or Video - get someone else that DOES buy stuff like these for you.
Seriously, this is what happens when you let people with 0 knowledge in technology deal with it - I call it "The Mechanic Effect".
"Ahhh, yeah, you're going to need another carburetor shaft ring. 300$ plz". - Sucka27, on 03/23/2009, -0/+99Monoprice.com. HDMI cable...4 bucks.
- packerbacker89, on 03/23/2009, -0/+98Someone should go and switch the cables...
- sousademiami, on 03/23/2009, -0/+90Especially in times like these, no one should pay more than $10 for an HDMI cable delivered to your front door!
- Tek12, on 03/23/2009, -0/+89I wonder if they used a Monster composite cable...
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -5/+91Nah. Monster Cables do a better job when it comes to Abortions.
- EtherGnat, on 03/23/2009, -1/+82It's Diggworthy, but the kinds of people that read Digg in general aren't the kinds of people that would fall for this scam.
- evil-doer, on 03/23/2009, -1/+74buy ALL cables from monoprice. and adapters, and speakers, and whatever else. they are a great store.
- N00F, on 03/23/2009, -0/+56Or a new "Johnson Rod"
- plaguepony, on 03/23/2009, -1/+55Paying extra for digital cables in the hope that it will improve your image is useless. The digital stream sent on an HDMI or DVI link has no error correction, so signal degradation outside of the specified parameters will look like a dead pixel, or a pure white "star" on the screen. If you do not see these, then you cannot improve your picture anymore than it already is with a cable.
Is it less than 12 feet, and have a high frequency impedance of 75 Ohms? Then you are fine. - Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 03/23/2009, -0/+53Oh my god these are great!
"This connection isn't sound. If my calculations are correct, it should be sometime around 2007 for whomever is reading this. DO NOT USE THESE CABLES. Something... happens with them. Something came through, something from somewhere else. We were overrun in days, not many of us are left. WE LIVE UNDERGROUND! ONLY YOU CAN STOP IT NOW. SAVE US. DO NOT USE THESE CABLES.
I don't have much time. This connection isn't sound. If my calculations are correct, it should be-- "
"Transmission of music data at rates faster than the speed of light seemed convenient, until I realized I was hearing the music before I actually wanted to play it. Apparently Denon forgot how accustomed most of us are to unidirectional time and the general laws of physics. I tried to get used to this effect but hearing songs play before I even realized I was in the mood for them just really screwed up my preconceptions of choice and free will. I'm still having a major existential hangover.
Would not purchase again. " - Lasereth, on 03/23/2009, -2/+52I came in here to say that I bought all 3 of my HDMI cables for $2.99 each. SlickDeals FTW. I can't believe Monster ***** is still in business.
- newerakb, on 03/23/2009, -1/+46That's really only the case with digital cables, like HDMI. With an analog data stream, your signal can be degraded or interfered with, so there's some difference in final quality between basic cables and more heavily shielded cables. But with digital data, the data either successfully reaches the destination, or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it gets sent again. So you either have a perfect picture, or you're just completely missing data. There's no middle ground with a degraded picture quality.
This is what makes me so mad about Monster. They took the slight performance advantage they had with their shielded analog cables, and are now trying to convince people that they still have that advantage in a digital arena. - yacks, on 03/23/2009, -5/+47Actually, Real Men make and use their own HDMI cables..
- politechaos, on 03/23/2009, -4/+45I worked at a store who displayed the "Monster" difference (Radio Shack), and by no means was it considered a scam. We flat out told people that this was the difference between a standard hookup and an HDMI cable. There's no scam in the display comparison, and we made it plain and clear.
The scam is in paying $100 for an HDMI cable, which only the sharkiest and most vile of salespeople at our store would con people into purchasing. (Proving that commission does not encourage competition, it only encourages doucheyness.) - UselessTrivia, on 03/23/2009, -1/+41Obligatory Penny Arcade
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2002/11/25/ - diggduggDOOM, on 03/23/2009, -0/+40Blinker fluid's looking a bit low, too. Luckily we have a special on that: half-off this week only.
- MadHarvey, on 03/24/2009, -0/+38Negligible? You obviously are not an abortophile
- z0rk, on 03/23/2009, -0/+38i remember those, someone gave me a pack of them for my birthday one year. i was like wtf, it's just an over packaged cdr.
- Treshnell, on 03/23/2009, -0/+37And after the employee spends some minutes showing how much greater the monster cables look, calmly point out that the monster cables are fed into the other TV...
- EtherGnat, on 03/23/2009, -0/+35Or even cheaper at Monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.as ...
- spiffyfitz, on 03/23/2009, -0/+34I just spent about $50 at monoprice the other day. I bought an assload of cables, adapters, and connectors for that much money. What a fantastic company!
- TCSavant, on 03/23/2009, -0/+33I paid ~20 dollars for each of my HDMI cables and even then I knew I was paying too much. Can't understand why some will pay upwards of $100 for these.
- xster, on 03/23/2009, -0/+32sarcasm?
- wibambau, on 03/23/2009, -0/+31Monoprice and Newegg, you just can't go wrong!
- Topher06, on 03/23/2009, -0/+31Have you seen the earbuds Monster is selling these days? If I spend $300 for a set of earbuds, it better give me good head.
- nate007, on 03/24/2009, -1/+32I paid $6.00 for my HDMI cable
- Rivetgeek, on 03/23/2009, -1/+31Gotta love the blatantly obvious Monster Cable sockpuppet account.
http://www.engadget.com/profile/2710263/ - DTK1337, on 03/23/2009, -1/+29It's funny how a Monster bashing post has turned into a Monoprice ad.
- IphtashuFitz, on 03/23/2009, -1/+29My favorite bash against Monster is the fact that expert audiophiles couldn't tell the difference between jazz played over Monster cables vs. jazz played over coat hanger wires. Yep, that's right. Take some old wire coat hangers and the quality is just as good as Monster cable. No idea if this means coat hanger wire is of much better quality than I ever would have guessed, or if Monster audio cables are just pieces of crap...
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showpost.php? ... - Jones82, on 03/23/2009, -1/+29The difference is negligible
- liljay2k, on 03/23/2009, -1/+28Monoprice FTW!
- djbon2112, on 03/23/2009, -2/+29"delivered to your front door!"
Shipping was probably $7 of that. - spiffyfitz, on 03/23/2009, -0/+26But the guy at Best Buy told me I had to keep out harmful atmospheric radiation waves that could distort my pixels!
- Dipsomaniac, on 03/23/2009, -0/+26I carve mine out of the finest old-growth timber from the British Columbia rainforest. Beats Monster any day.
- richgustavson, on 03/23/2009, -0/+25Monoprice FTW!
- AndrewDB, on 03/23/2009, -5/+30I fail how to see digging this would make much of a difference.
- lutiana, on 03/23/2009, -5/+30Umm, there is a difference between Audio CD-Rs and Data CD-Rs. You need Audio CD-R for stand alone CD recorders (the type added to a sound system), this was because the manufacturers of them actually paid royalties to the RIAA to create them (via a copyright arrangement). The thinking was that they would be used for piracy therefore the royalties had to be paid. It was the only way they could make and ship CD recorders that did only music.
That being said there is actually a bit (or a few bits) encoded onto the Music CD-R to identify the fact that these royalties were paid, it is also the reason why they cost more. They are otherwise identical to the non-music ones.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-R - problyTaCit, on 03/24/2009, -2/+26he was actually referring to a test i saw on headfi that compared monster cables to wire coat hangers and the people doing the audio comparison could not hear a difference
- Dirtynoodle111, on 03/23/2009, -0/+24I bought my Dad a 6 foot HDMI cable for like $6 bucks the other day. He was about to go to Best Buy and try to find a "cheap" on there until I showed him monoprice. Changed his life!
- samael696, on 03/23/2009, -0/+23It's like mini audio cables. Belkin for example has one that comes in a red package, and axactly the SAME cable comes in a white package that says "Made for iPod". I swear it's the exact same 6' long cable, and one is like $6 and the "iPod" one is like $19... Sadly a lot of people fall for this type of scam.
