My WRT54GS v4 updates just fine. - PorkCharSui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only reason they now have a special linux version is because they crippled the existing wrt54g and then made a new version so they could charge more.
- chris86wm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how nice
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well thats nice of them.
- n6mod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I give them points for the thought (though they're likely just selling off old v4 hardware), but it's a little odd given that the GS has even more RAM and Flash, for about the same money.

captain obvious for the win! - launchpadtt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not so much supporting OSS as saving costs while keeping us happy
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone else thought Linksys was taking Linux hackers to court?
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good job. i'm happy to read that
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those who don't know...The regular pre-V5 WRT-54G can still be found on store shelves. You just need to watch the serial number. They all start with CDF*. * can be anything 1-9 & A or B. If it is anything before B it is V4 or earlier, and therefor usable. The CDFB is the version 5 and you don't want that one.

- DAMU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WRT54G is an excellent piece of hardware! I've had one for over 2 years and love it!
- riskable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The truth is that there are better devices out there now than the WRT (various versions). You can load 3rd party firmwares on a number or Linux-based consumer routers. Many of them have more memory, processing power, and features than the WRT series.
This link has the list of these routers. My favorite so far us the Asus WL-500G deluxe. Since it has USB ports, you can do just about anything with it including turning it into a print server, file server (with an attached USB hard drive), console server, etc. - zarlwilliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"anyone else thought Linksys was taking Linux hackers to court?

haha the first time i read the title... yes. glad i wasnt the only one.
yay linksys on this one tho! - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's great to see a big company embrace the open source movement!"
Then how come they haven't released linux drivers? Every time I boot, I have to load some makeshift drivers using files from a Windows driver and ndiswrapper. It's nice that they do this, but they should really develop some linux drivers if they want to be considered as a company that embraces the open source movement. - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good call Linksys/Cisco/whatever
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cawpin: Sadly, I spent several hours combing every store in the western portion of Henrico County, VA trying to locate a V4 or earlier WRT54G and couldn't (Best Buy, CompUSA, Staples, OfficeMax & Circuit City). They were all the Easy-Setup V5's.
n6mod: "I give them points for the thought (though they're likely just selling off old v4 hardware)" I kind of thought the same thing. Has anyone out there gotten a WRT54GL and noted the serial number? It would begin with a CDF*A* or earlier, as cawpin pointed out. - gheide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keeps companies like SVEASOFT.com making great roms for the 54g... We've been using their Talisman on 2 54g's at the house... Several of my brother's clients are set up with it as well. Walmart usually has the CDFA** serials in stock (ours did about a week ago)

The link didn't post, hmmm. - cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice!
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's awesome!
- mridley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Right, but, if they were going to release a version specifically targeted for linux people and already expected it to be more of a niche product when developing it, then why didn't they release the GS version with more RAM?
-m - canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is stupid to ask but as a simple home user with about two tivos, 1 xbox, and a laptop all on the network... what do any of the 3rd party firmwares have to offer? what specifically are some of the desirable features of the open source firmwares?
- zombie-m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@super_structure
You might want to check Walmart if you haven't already. I've seen v4's in 2 different stores in my area (UT). - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Zombie-m: Gracias. I'll have to swing by the Big Blue Whore(TM) on my way home. Given their liberal return policies, I'm sure I can stand to brick one or two getting Sveasoft (or similar) installed.
- sublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Zombie, you are correct. I just bought 2 at the local Walmart for 49.99 each. without coupon or rebate.
I now have 4 WRT54G's at home (in a 2 bedroom apartment). v1.1, v2.0, v4.0, v4.0
All four run OpenWRT RC4 firmware and my girlfriend would kill me if I got another. - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone ever notice the similarity of the 2 names?
- slhilbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I own one of these beauties and I love it. The range is a bit lacking though.
