- Killasta43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think the point of this article is that lightscrive has come out! We all saw the HP commercials nearly a year ago. As the title of the article is, "LG Light Scribe DVD Burner (with pics)". I'd say he was mentioning that LG came out with a light scribe burner. I am glad to see that more companies are taking on HPs invention. LG is a great company and I am sure they will do much better things with LS than HP could ever do.
- ottis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure why this is news. Lightscribe DVD burners have been out for over a year.
Where's the best source for Lightscribe Media? Where can you get them for 60 cents? - anakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a lightscribe drive. I took it back. I was using it for my brother's wedding DVD. It worked great, but you really had to run the labels through twice. Once at best (30 minutes) again at Normal (20 Minutes)... So 50 minutes to print a label. My only saving grace was my other NEC burner, doing all the data work while the HP drive did the labels.
Beautiful results, but could be a LOT faster. Better if it did both jobs at once. - gohoos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Media is much cheaper than $5/pop. It is nearly the same price as regular media.
I really like my lightscribe burner - the burned labels just look so much better than some sticker. - hppyfngy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares. Me and my Sharpie do just fine.
- DJB31st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good idea if the media was cheaper. (which it probably will be eventually)
I hate writing on discs!!
Zenchristo.. the "Other Side" of a dual-layer disk is the side without the data on like any other disk, its "dual-layer" not "dual-side"
uses 2 different powers and angles of lazers to see through to the other side - shimmyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doing a quicksearch on Froogle and the media really is only about $1 per pop for the CD, and $1.50 per DVD.
- digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reguardless of the lightscribe features, the drive looks bad ass. i like LG.
- DON1802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Found some Verbatim 52x 700mb Lighscribe CD's in a 30 pack for $17.99. That equates to about 60c a CD. Pretty good price really. Definately would be a great item to have, no more untidy markers or time consuming labels.
Could someone tell me how long it actually takes to burn the image? - zenchristo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"... burn an image on the other side of the disc. ... supporting every format including RAM and DL."
So I have a real question... which side is the "other side" of a dual-layer disk? - DON1802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting...I agree, I guess it wouldn't really be worthwhile unless the media drops in price. More of a novelty item than anything else for now.
- mandolinsrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Could someone tell me how long it actually takes to burn the image?"
It takes about 24-27 minutes for a full CD (or DVD) image and about 4-10 minutes for just text. In other words, forever. - einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh. I'll stick with my Primera Bravo II. Expensive as hell but I use it daily. Short runs of DVDs, printed, I sell to my clients for $2.99 in a jewel case. CD-Rs $1.49. It's fast, product is durable, the media is 33 cents (DVD), the ink 35 cents, all automated, woot.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what would be really cool if you could burn not just images, but data that could be read by a scanner and some software, or something like that.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course the media is pricey right now, its new. In case people weren't paying attention, EVERYTHING thats new is more expensive when it first comes out. My first CDR drive (2X recording!), media was $20 a pop.
- Jeppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that is so frickin sweet...I want one! I just don't want to pay the $5 a pop for the disks....maybe in a year the price will be much lower. Yeah I know....call me cheap.
- MaxwellsMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have the Lacie Lightsribe DVD burner and yes it does take a little while to burn the image but the results are much more professional than the inkjet type.
- Doomhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet. And yes, media is a bit pricey right now... But this is still cool.
digitaltrav: I'm not sure it would really be in "black and white"... It may produce a kind of Microsoft-Windows-CD-effect. :S - maxedout789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my HP has one for DVD already, how is this a recent story?
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A pal of mine has this and was shipping DVDs to a few folks, including myself. It turns out that his drive is the only one that can read the media that it burns.
It sounds good on paper but may not be so hot in practice. - digitaltrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad the media is like $5 a pop. If it burned into regular labeled CD's it would be awesome, but right now its totally overpriced. And the results are black-and-white so you'd be better off just popping for a color stick label. Cheaper AND higher quality.
- dickzorz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is really old, a few months now. It takes forever too. I installed one of these for a friend a few months ago. Its not worth the time it takes to burn the images. An image like the one in the pic would take upwards of 1.5 hours.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An Epson R200 printer for $79-89 runs circles around LightScribe. 1-2 minutes for a full coverage, full color printed CD/DVD. And inkjet printable CDs are $.40 (or less) many places.
As for LightScribe...
25+ *minutes* to etch a halftoned B&W image onto a CD? That you have to manually flip to write? That ties up your burner as well? That costs $.60+/disc? Sign me up.
:S - darkmad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HP has had them for a while now
- brett.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1these are old I own a lacie light scribe burner
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$5 a pop...LOL
I just got one of these yesterday, and thanks to fatwallet clearance media for it at staples. The results are fantastic, the discs look so so so good. However, like others have said the cavet is the fact that it takes 30 minutes to scribe a single cd/dvd. But for discs I want to keep, I am definately into it. :) - eyesx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also see HP Lightscribe Technology

Of course... That's why most professional photographers working digitally use Epson printers. Get your facts straight before you post that kind of stuff. - Trecherus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0link is gone try
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripherals/lg-launches-lightscribe-dvd-drives-127726.php - jimmiem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lightscribe is very cool, but no digg here, it's just too old. I have one in my laptop and one in my desktop. Having it in my laptop is what I love, and totally makes it worthwhile. Yeah, you can get better quality from an inkjet CD printer, but who wants to carry one of those around?
- extant59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats been out for over a week at work... a little late with this.. plus its just lightscribe.
- Cam_86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cant believe people are buying into this. Like others have said...
Expensive media + poor image quality + outrageous print times = horrible idea.
Maybe if they develop the tech to allow colour, and faster 'scribes' it would be worth the extra cash. As it is now, the only people i can see using this, are those that dont know about Epsons CD printer. - chadian22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pretty cool, i remember my friend had plextor(?) one a 3 years ago and it would only work on the amount of blank space left... so if you burnt a full 700 MB there would be no room for the image... they were called cd tatoos or something but anyways if this can be done and still use all the data, that would be sweet, and a lot more fun. New news to me .. dugg.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Epson printers blow, maybe that's why I won't buy one. Plus that ink fades over time as well.
Poor image quality my ass, the discs look really good actually. Though color would be nice, as would faster burn times. - mikeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish it would work on regular disk and that you don't have to buy their special light scribe disk
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0#1 problem with the Lightscribe technology: The image fades over time.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Seriously over a year old. No digg.

http://geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=dw1625-n - asthmatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This has been out for over a year. Why would you digg this, it isnt even that cool. Its a gimik, something that normal consumers would think is cuting edge. Please stop digging lame *****. I can find this crap on Cnet.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0no digg... this is the dumbest article I've seen... they'll all like, yea it like burns an image and stuff on the cd, or something like that... Check these articles out about lightscribe:
