All i can say: I WANT ONE - GatorDavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These are awesome! I'm going to start with the #%#% construction machines on the corner of Santa Monica and Beverly Glen ...
- Pas3n7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see the need for rare earth magnets, ceramic magnets would be cheaper (if you can find a bulk supplier) and effective enough to get the same effect.

I've sugusted this before...
it should just cache it with nyud or a digg specific C.C. Server before it hits home page, and add [report dead] and [cache] buttons to each story - Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"No, it's not staged at all. They just happened to have a hundred Li batteries, magnets, leds, and a dozen rolls of tape lying around, put them together in the spur of the moment, and decided to throw them at the first metal building they passed by. I'm not for the staged idea, I just figured someone should stand up for his side too."
You're confusing the meanings of "staged" and "preconceived." It was obviously preconceived, since they made upwards of probably 500 of these things. "Staged" implies that it was some how fake, which isn't the case. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just make a bunch and throw them on your car :P
- MonkeyFCoconut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When someone says, "staged".. your immediate thought is "faked", even though that's not what staged means. You can relate this to a Magic Illusion. However in this scenario there's nothing fake about what they did.. sure they intensionally purchased materials to build a device for a set purpose. I just don't get what the point of saying they staged it is.. technically it is staged.. they planned it out.. is your life staged, and by whom?
Forgive me for any ill thoughts.. it's 2am and I'm in need of some rest. Can you digg it? - Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How hard are LEDs to brake? Do the lithium batteries create any environmental concerns?
- JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bigg digg
- vndr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it will last something like 12 hours since 10mm LED's are 20mA and those 2032 batteries are 240mAh....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you have a bunch of junk hard drives laying around, you can rip the magnets out of them and save a few bucks. They are usually paired and semicircular and attached near the pivot arm for the read head inside the drive.
- ultraelite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wtf how do they stick to what looks like a brick building if they are just rare earth magnets??
- djs1117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you wanted to save a bit, you could just get double sided tape or something and use it on other surfaces...you couldn't throw them though
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^we need an edit comments button, Great way to spread battery acid aswell

DUGG! - cvirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a one time piece of urban art i think it's pretty neat. but lets be realistic, it's a terrible waste if people start picking up on this and i wouldn't encourage it. enough problems with the environment as it is than to start throwing away batteries, tape, magnets and leds needlessly.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great way to have spread battery acid everywhere aswell
- nelsonjj1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is freakin' amazing! i fonly it didn't cost so much. i'd like to make some cheap ones for my room
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"So the LEDs were mass produced and someone got a bunch of people to throw at a building. The key is mass produced. This would not happen in everyday life... ever. Therefore it's 'staged'."
Am I delerious or is this guy's argument completely incoherent - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this will for sure make it on diggnation
and no one needs to hate on diggnation or kevin or alex, because they made this site, so they arnt that bad. - DtectiveGFriday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome. I want some. Im going to make a thousand. or two.
maybe three. - MonkeyFCoconut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Where's the vandalism?"
Well, you are changing the appearance (aka defacing) of public property, and adding some enviromentally unfriendly elements to it (i.e. Li batteries). That said, it's still damn cool ;D - mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2004584102456272205
- benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this is awesome, but for $1 a throwie, does it really seem practical? I mean, you can buy christmas lights at walmart after the holidays for like $2 a box.
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the way, this is one of the coolest things I've Dugg in a while. The link should have lead to the video posted towards the beginning in the comments, though, it's so much cooler. Plus it has a link to the page origionally Dugg right below it.
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Third... is the video of people throwing these things at a house real? No, obviously completely staged. "
Actually, if you would have taken a second to find out what you're talking about, you would know that the "LEDing" was not staged, and the building was a Fine Arts Center which had a METAL exterior. There was nothing staged about it. Why would you even think that? - dpsleep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works now

So the LEDs were mass produced and someone got a bunch of people to throw at a building. The key is mass produced. This would not happen in everyday life... ever. Therefore it's 'staged'."
A group of people got together to do something unique. That's the definition of everyday life. - MonkeyFCoconut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very sweet.. too bad they are fairly expensive. Although, this is something that this group does for fun, instead of spending cash on booze, drugs, or sex.. wait a minute.. there are more things to spend cash on for fun - don't get it twisted. Anyhoo.. super mega ultra diggity!
- Genghis1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hazardous material - chemicals in batteries and LED leads are tinned with solder containing lead.
- MonkeyFCoconut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, I think that "thing" that they are throwing the LED Thowies on is actually some metal free-form ART.. I could be wrong but when they showed a close-up it looked that way to me.
- TomRitchford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They're throwing thethrowies at a gallery in New York City at 23rd Street and 10th Av.
Just like the bravia commercial that the video is ripping off, it glorifies waste and massive, conspicuous consumption. Those stupid little batteries are incredibly destructive to the environment. The whole thing is a bad idea and our grandchildren will curse us for it. - YuleLogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Environmental hazard. Batteries will not biodegrade!!! NO DIGG!"
Planets come and planets go... - alexmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^For one it should be around $1 as suggested.^
