- sphogan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36Answer: Apple knew the Core Duo would do so well ;)
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The iMac rocks even more now.
- LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8But Desktops are the past, Laptops are the future.
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I agree with you kevnaca... The Pentium 4 line was utterly utterly shameful compared to the direction that the K8, and consequently the new Cores take.
A lot of people blast Apple for doing an about-face on how Intel's chips were slow compared to the PPC, but you have to keep things in perspective : the P4 and it's ilk were power hungry monsters that didn't perform enough to justify the consumption... only when Intel changed its swan song to power/performance and revealed their thrifty new Core products did Apple consider them. - kampf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Awesome CPU with only one real drawback (EMT64). I'll ride the Opteron train till the Merom can be had with a board for less than a cheap used car.
- GodsMadClown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Is this against the rules? Shouldn't the article stand on its own merit?
- doubleshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First of all, read the original article; The Tech Report praises the Core Duo, justifiably, for having stellar performance with low power draw. Why would you go on a rant against AMD in your comment that criticizes an article that praises Intel?
Second, LOTS of sites and blogs ask readers to digg their articles. Just check out the [H]'s most recent article: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTAzMywxOSwsaGVudGh1c2lhc3Q=
They explicitly ask for diggs in their conclusion. And it worked -- the article made the front page of digg.com. - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Intel was being arrogant following the Netburst architecture. Hence the Apple ad burning the Intel bunny man. They would probably have processors more powerful and cooler if they took the hint that AMD has the better path.
- super_duper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3a bit off topic, but the number of ads on that page is horrendous.
Cheers to the Core Duo. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have to say this only adds fuel to my already hot fire to pick up a Core-Duo Mac. The ability to boot OS 10, Linux and windows in one box and at stompin' speed is a huge draw for me.
- yadallah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Righteousness and ignorance so often go hand in hand although I guess I should thank you because I wouldn't have signed up for digg other than to comment negatively against you. Thanks to Scott for pointing me to digg which I hadn't previously known about. I don't have a problem with people linking sites and asking for feedback. I also think if you didn't like the article you should comment and say why.
Anyways, I thought the article was great. It pointed out the strength of Intel's core duo processor and compared it to some of today's top desktop processors. The core duo did great. Its good to see Intel coming out of their creative/competitive slump. This turns up the heat for AMD who has been pretty quiet as to what their future architectures will be capable of. good times and add AMD to the spell check. - LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Keep in mind that the prices of this chip is high because it is only 4 months old. When the next round of Core processors ship (Merom, Conroe, and Woodcrest), expect them to fill in the void as the Netburst based chips get phased out, and at similar price points. Yonah will also see a dramatic price drop as it becomes more prevalent and moves into the mid range of Intel's mobile processor space. (also note that traditionally laptop chips are priced higher than equivalent desktop chips)
The lack of 64-bit support isn't entirely a drawback for Yonah. As you can see by TFA, on many tests that were run comparing 32-bit to 64-bit support, 32-bit versions of various apps (like games) performed better than 64-bit versions... I attribute this to better optimization on the 32-bit architecture because it has been around longer, but also that 64-bit introduces the additional memory overhead of much larger pointer sizes. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In a nutshell, yes.
The Core architecture is superior in every way to Netburst. That's why Intel's dropping Netburst and going with Core in all its products in the near future. - Kerr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I agree with you...Laptops are the future not Desktops.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just a guess, but I think they changed their mind. Any more questions?
- elwel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-1 digg? What have i said?
- vickm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keep in mind that the apple hardware, while *definately* better looking, is far more expensive than something you can pick up from Dell or put together yourself with parts.
I haven't jumped ship to Apple quite yet... - jbrocket99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I can't wait to see what the Merom chips will do since the Pentium-M and the Core Duo chips are so fantastic....
2006 - 2007 will be an interesting period for Chip's... - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, yes for now.
This goes to show it that Intel is lagging on their desktop processors. But by the time Conroe and Kentsfield comes out, the desktop will once again take the lead. - vickm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a fantastic review of the processor even if you aren't a fan of the processor itself. Definately a digg.
BTW, I have a notebook with this processor and it screams :) - mwales, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I agree. Lack of 64-bit for this chip to me is a big letdown. It really surprises me that Apple went with it knowing this. Apple is the company that pushed for 64-bit computers. They went through the somewhat difficult process of updating/optimizing applications for 64-bit, and now they just stepped backwards. So all the apple users are gonna have to transition from 32-bit to 64-bit AGAIN!
What is also interesting in this article, is that the 64-bit Turion in alot of the single threaded applications. When the Turions get dual cores, they will be very powerful. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So what 64-bit apps are we dying to run here anyway??
- spacemoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That Apple ad was about the Pentium 2, which has nothing to do with Netburst.
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1tom's is right, plus its runs hotter
I have a an acer TM8204 and the cpu is generally @ 60deg C, about 10deg hotter than a TM8104 with a PM (also a 2.0) in the same chassis and with a similar graphics card (x1600 vs x700).
Dont get me wrong 2 cores are nice, but intel really screwed us by not letting the processor clock lower than 1ghz and a min voltage of .950V. I suspect that's where the power draw and heat are coming from. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There will always be a need for desktops and the excess power they provide. Just look at the Conroe results, Conroe destroys everything in its path, including Yonah, but there is a reason why Conroe is a desktop part, TDP. Desktops will always be the platform for high end performance.
- blaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Intel and apple is pretty sweet, but I personally think AMD and apple would have been better. Either way I think it’s better than IBM.
- elwel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Disagree. Intel Core duo power consumption is higher than two Pentium M, or that's what Tom's Hardware says.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i wish that mobo was btx and had dvi. it would make the best small and quiet htpc ever! =)
- xeigen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Anyone who bought an Intel XE is an idiot. I mean, my $300 X2 3800+ beats the $1000 XE 955 in most tests an in some beats the XE 965.
- Devz0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0with the amazing hyper-threading, why would duel cores be needed?
and wasn't it intel that said that people wouldn't want nor need duel core computers? what happened to that position? - AeroSquid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I see my single core Opteron 148@ 3.1ghz would win most if not all the gaming benchmarks.
nice. - code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3wasnt this on the front page just yesterday ? will it be comming back every day now ?
- starseven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0So why is my 1.83 pentium M sony laptop so much faster at everthing than my 1.83 core duo imac? Could it be that a bit of processer tweaking is less important than how the whole package works.
- morph777, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0If you look at his date, it's hardly a first comment noob spam. Don't be a jackass.
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2heh, good one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+9Useless first comment as always!
- Powertrip, on 10/12/2007, -18/+7Awesome.... Who thought that Core Duo would do so well?!
- AlexH, on 10/12/2007, -22/+3Great review as always!
- Shintai, on 10/12/2007, -26/+5get this off digg
this should be reported as spam http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/9810
they are telling people to digg it and that aint right
people should not buy amd right now and this confirms it. Not only is Conroe going to give amd the smack down but even Core Duo shows who is boss.
