- rauz, on 12/02/2007, -1/+189Two years old article, a lot has happened in WEP-cracking since and most of the info is outdated and/or no longer applicable.
Check out Backtrack and the forums at remote-exploit.org instead.

- secretrk1313, on 12/02/2007, -7/+52WEP cracking is so easy now that all infants in the 2008 year will now have it embedded as a standard in their minds.
- zspeed78, on 12/02/2007, -0/+39That process is pretty time consuming.. I prefer to drive further down the street and find the unsecured network.
- Mamesj, on 12/02/2007, -1/+33Yes, everything....except the ***** Nintendo DS, which pisses me off to no end.
- Bamborzled, on 12/02/2007, -0/+31You gain access to the world's largest underground ISP, "linksys".
- thewindfish, on 12/02/2007, -0/+29cracked WPA?
- JonnyTrombone, on 12/02/2007, -2/+29On the other hand, having WEP could be used as a great defense against the RIAA: "You're IP was logged downloading music!" "Yeah, but I have a wireless network with WEP..."
- plbland, on 12/02/2007, -1/+24Yea, but.. u know... i'm reaaaallllllly ***** lazy :o)
- TheKrillr, on 12/02/2007, -2/+25That's not cracking, that brute-force attacking.
- lesosso, on 12/02/2007, -0/+21no you didn't
- sparkmonkeyz, on 12/02/2007, -0/+20I have to use wep, the Nintendo DS doesn't support WPA, or at least the original one doesn't, I don't know about the lite.
- p0ss, on 12/02/2007, -1/+16right next to your name
- chsbrgr, on 12/02/2007, -2/+16don't unplug your rout
- toomuchpete, on 12/02/2007, -1/+14...or just leave your network open.
- computergod, on 12/03/2007, -0/+12It says 2 laptops, and really you can just use 2 wifi cards in one lappy.
- vraa, on 12/02/2007, -5/+17Buried because this is incredibly old.
Most everything supports WPA2 by now. - Etheo, on 12/02/2007, -0/+12Then again, my DS doesn't support WPA now does it?
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -1/+13Dugg to bring attention that WEP sucks
- p0ss, on 12/02/2007, -4/+16I hadn't heard of BackTrack, but heres the essential information.
a list of supported laptops:
http://backtrack.offensive-security.com/index.php? ...
a list of supported cards:
http://backtrack.offensive-security.com/index.php? ...
And here is how to use it:
http://backtrack.offensive-security.com/index.php? ...
I have to say, backtrack supports far more cards than Aircrack
I'm convinced.
I think I'll make a backtrack usb stick tonight. - not5150, on 12/03/2007, -0/+11Hello all... I am the author of the article and even I am puzzled as to why it has been republished. Many of the tools are now out of date and there are much better methods of cracking WEP available today.
Slow day for the editor I guess.
Humphrey Cheung - Beakerz, on 12/02/2007, -4/+15WEP = *****
seriously, if you know anything about computers you had better be using WPA.... i dont know how many videos are online of people cracking multiple WEP keys in less than a few minutes...WEP is absolutely useless. - aliguana, on 12/02/2007, -4/+15ethernet cable/wired router ftw
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -0/+11Which can be obtained in a few seconds with airodump (displays all client macs)
- landty, on 12/02/2007, -4/+13Why don't we just not use any security since nothing is 100% safe and secure!
- steelclash84, on 12/03/2007, -0/+9The Wii most definitely supports WPA2...
DS...not so much. - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+9Two words: MAC SPOOFING
- tyywebb, on 12/02/2007, -1/+10Oh no he di'n't!!
- skierjs, on 12/02/2007, -3/+11The updated guide: (Aug 1/07)
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30114/ ... - cfuse, on 12/03/2007, -1/+9What makes you think I paid for the 3 laptops?
- ObeseSnake, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8That doesn't mean most people use WPA2. 99% of the AP that I can see right down my street are still using WEP. I'll give you that the article is old but a lot of people still use WEP, clueless people mind you.
- phaed, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7no you only need one card and one laptop
- Weather, on 12/02/2007, -3/+10WPA2-PSK FTW!
- krazikamikaze, on 12/02/2007, -1/+8WPA2-PSK with a strong key FTW.
It doesn't matter how strong your encryption is if your password is weak against a dictionary attack. - iofthestorm, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7Seriously, I wish Nintendo would make it so that the Wii could act as a gateway for the DS so I could set my network to WPA... although I don't know how feasible that is.
- milliamp, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7Two words: MAC spoofing
- skyshock1, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6That's precisely what I do. I just leave it open and set up QoS so that any clients other than me get throttled severely.
- dave98, on 12/02/2007, -3/+9WPA is only as good as the passphrase. If the passphrase is complicated enough, you're not going to crack it in your lifetime.
- blindmelon1, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6CAT 6 Cable FTW!!
- computergod, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6Personally I just leave my network open and set the SSID to "playnice" and people generally do. That, and I get to have fun watching them on ehterreal.
Naturally, I only connect to it while hardwired most of the time so I can get fast transfers from my file server over GigE. When I want wireless, then I only do it through an encrypted VPN session. - l2OI3, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6My thoughts exactly, just get a bunch of expert witnesses to talk about how outdated and weak WEP is and it could help most any court case. And then make sure to blame your convenient hd failure on "anonymous".
- podwich, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6My WEP, your 7 minutes, your WEP, my unplugging the router, your irrelevancy.
- xtc46, on 12/03/2007, -1/+6@TheKrillr
Brute force is a method for cracking. And actually what he was referring to is a dictionary attack. Brute force would be sending strings trying every conceivable combination based on a set of parameters (like letters or letters numbers and special characters, or case sensitive,)
What is really occurring in the article however is decrypting. Which is looking for patterns in information to determine the actual meaning. for example:
Digg This would be Ejhh Uijt if using a Rot 2 encryption. You can see that there is a patter and thus able to determine the real phrase. - r3zonance, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5A dictionary attack isn't really hacking is it, it's guessing.
- milliamp, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5You didn't crack the "original WPA standard" you brute forced the AP with a wordlist. This is like saying MD5 is insecure because I was able to guess that you used 12345 as your password. The network security class you are taking probably staged an AP with an intentionally easy PW that someone knew was easy to brute force. WPA is still considered pretty secure.
- markwilcox, on 12/02/2007, -1/+6Maybe you already dugg it?
- MarrowMan, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5This article is news like the Hindenburg is news, who posts this *****?
- DarkSunlight, on 12/02/2007, -4/+9Yeah, they are sooo hard to spoof...
Idiot... - bieber, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4It's not about being perfect, it's about being good enough to deter people from _casually_ abusing whatever you're trying to protect. If someone wants something bad enough and there's a route to it, no amount of security is going to stop them, but most of us don't have to deal with people like that...
