- Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually its very general information for someone like a Marketer. They didnt touch on any of the technical know how for a VOIP network. One of the main problems with VOIP today is NAT Traversal. And trust me its alot harder then ordering some SBC device..lol
Good article for Marketers, worthless for us technical diggers. - cgruber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you think this was good and you're seriously considering doing VoIP you need to hire some consultants.. This is the crap you read from a VP of marketing.
And for the record I am a network engineer for a service provider and helped build our VoIP network which is currently servicing 70,000 VoIP customers. - kildurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did not find this very useful. I am a Staff Engineer in IP and OS engineering for a major telecom vendor. Telecom folks still do not believe that the datacenter rules. (Please don't get me started on ATCA. If ATCA were that great, every industry would use it. Can you say Intel BS?) One day, all telecom equipment will end up in the datacenter. Here's to the death of the Central Office. Theys still do not believe me.
But let me say this, all the BS in the world will never change my mind, if you want to use IP in the telecom world, you need rapid fail over. It just kills me to see all the idiots telling me to use multiple VLANS at the equipment end. HELL NO. It has to be Rapid Spanning Tree. 3 x Hello at 1 per second is still 3 seconds ad that is 2 seconds too slow. VRRP/HSRP is no failover mechanism for telecom. Please.
If you understand this, you been in telecom too long. Like I have. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats a pretty short document to be an "experts guide"... hell one of my VoIP posts on my site is longer than his entire document.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The P stands for Protocol...
It's Voice Over Internet Protocol - It's the same 'IP' as in TCP/IP
However, I do agree that there is little or no information in the 'article' at all, well, apart from Captain Obvious type stuff... - zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why would an expert, in any subject, need such a thing as a guide...?....
- DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^
Why can't Digg users, use than and then correctly! It's frustrating. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you don't understand VoIP networks or how the technology operates visit my site http://www.notquiteleet.com
Start here: http://notquiteleet.com/?p=21 then read http://notquiteleet.com/?p=26.
I hope this helps some of the novices. - faultybydesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2An enjoyable read. Obviously it wasn't meant to be a 'complete guide', but as an overview to what to expect, I guess it could be useful.
- cgruber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This was terrible.
- SirZRX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i was specting a guide
- andysimmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One could never condense a comprehensive guide to designing and deploying an enterprise-grade VOIP network into a single forum post. That said, this guy doesn't even come close. There's nothing technical in this article at all. It's a fundamental overview of a few of the pieces necessary to get started.
For those interested in the technical side of things, there's some okay information at http://www.voip-info.org. It's enough to get your feet wet at least. - manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7You would be surprised that many diggers aren't as stupid as you are, great guide for anyone interested in Voip.
- ggidster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The P is "protocol". A layer 5 network isn't concerned with switching. It's working at protocol level - I think that's where you've misunderstood the point. The link to article at Wikipedia within the article explaning the OSI model is a good resource. It's a hard concept to grasp - I think that's why they use the word "cloud" and not "network" to try and distinguish for the non-network techies.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All server specific, what about the actual network? If we are counting pennies here, you may want to save a few for the network itself.
- CreateSomeNoise, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1So what. Its better than articles about the idiot Obama or the LIE about global warming or God forbid American Idol *****.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Probably yeah. I guess I'm pat of the 1% (we're rolling out a VOIP service at my work within the year)
- phpkerouac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This seems more like an outline for how to gather the necessary parts to be a 'VSP' (Voice Service Provider) rather than how to build/maintain an enterprise VOIP network.
This article mentions nothing of how to provision quality of service, Service Level Agreement, change management - or really any of the key components to build and manage a VoIP network.
This is like a recipe with an ingredients list but lacking the critical steps on how to do anything with any of the parts. - signalguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As others have already said, this is no "experts guide." It merely gives you an overview of the things needed to become a voice service provider. If you're looking to rollout VoIP to your company, this won't help a lick.
Oh yeah... * rules! - SpaceBass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guess I was still 1/2 asleep... re-read and he does make mention of Asterisk

VOIP Services Provider - SpaceBass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah, I re-read it...guess I was still asleep today!
- MayhemUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was plenty expert enough for me! :) I guess it depends on your perspective.
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Are you blind?
"No, you cannot use Asterisk at the hub of your VoIP network."
It mentions Asterusk later, too. I'll let you find it. - taken3, on 02/14/2009, -0/+0Earn residual passive income by completing online surveys. Join free survey sites today. Start making passive income with these make money free survey sites today.

VOIP Services Provider - MadebyLIMBO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This'll no doubt be very useful as I have yet to realise the VOIP Potential. Cheers.

- ssonceau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i would like to open a voip company i need help please, i got the money
- SpaceBass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Some good info for sure... but no mention of Asterisk, bummer!
- tardypete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Spacebass ! I counted five mentions of Asterisk - This info is worth big money to someone ! Great well managed Website for VOIP interested people. Not a sniff of Spam
- Misterm65, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2This is not great information, lots of information was left out or missing. I'm sorry but a bunch of servers do not make a network. They said nothing of switching, routing or the like not to mention QoS. He also mentioned layer 5 network? I'm not 100% sure put I do believe the P in VOIP stands for packets which is layer 3.
- inkydvd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Will be using this as a reference next time I decide to upgrade
Dugg! - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5This is probably useful to less than 1% of diggers
- pubmastertex, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0This is great information from an authoritative source.
What is Digg?
