- skored, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Thank God I read this - I was just about to do some of these tests :)
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28When I clicked on the link, I expected disastrous cooling experiments. What I saw was strange, yet successful methods to cooling a computer. Therefore, I sit at my desk, confused.
Buried as inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21hey, give it a shot. prove to us you'd be fine by dropping a toaster in your tub.
- asdfrewq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19What would we discuss this story on your forums when we can discuss it right here in the comments on digg?
Seems a little pointless to have a digg forum when digg basically is one big giant forum, eh? - capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21but will it deep fry a whole turkey?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18u r darwin material
moron - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17You DO realize, don't you, that you can get SUED. Not just removed from the iste. And yes, usually the first step is a C&D letter without a lawsuit. But they don't HAVE to give you that courtesy. And since you are not only violating their trademark, but also the TOS by constantly spamming their site, they may just decide to make an example out of you.
Granted, they probably wouldn't win much from you, but do you really want to go thorugh the process? - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I've seen this done with mineral oil instead of cooking oil. Since mineral oil is clear, it has a cooler looking effect.
Also, the 5GHz OC wasn't done with dry ice, it was done with liquid nitrogen. Dry ice is frozen CO2, and wouldn't get your CPU to -190 degrees. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Link to the original site: http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/12/30/5_ghz_project/index.html
Die, you spam blogging bastards! - kosmoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've got an oil-cooled PC. I just got a 10-gallon fish tank, put the motherboard inside and added some fans to help circulate the oil. On one end of the tank I have several small bilge pumps that pump the oil up, where it is then deposited onto a ramp. The oil then flows down the ramp to the other side of the tank, and falls back in with the rest of the oil. The ramp serves two purposes: 1) Circulate the oil and 2) Allow for the oil to be cooled. The power supply and external drives are all mounted on the top of the case. I also extended all of the ports from the motherboard to the outside so I don't have to stick my hand in mineral oil every time I need to plug something in. It all works pretty nicely.
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Watching that Li-Ion really makes me thing twice about setting my notebook computer on my lap.
- TonyBuzzan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm going to give these a try. Mark Erickson from Infinite Solutions says its ok to test your computer this way, so it must be ok.
- LRoy12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yup, frying in a PC's oil...
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1104341 - Slagged, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Neat idea to be sure but the article sucks. Don't bother.
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No no children, let him do it, it's the only way he'll learn.
If he survives, he won't do it again.
If he dies, then he won't have offspring-giving the human race a fighting chance. - LordZodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Inaccurate: dry ice =! liquid nitrogen
- 10scott10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6do you think i could cook some fries in the oil cooled system?
- Soldierboi, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5What's wrong with experimenting? These guys are the pioneers of our generation.....
I couldn't type that with a straight face. - Shirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't mind the spamming asshat, he copy/pastes the same reply in every story on the front page.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5what a useless article. not once did it say WHY not to test your computer these ways. the liquid nitrogen i can see them worrying over, because of water condensation (though i think with some imagination you could shield the components from that), but the passive oil cooling thing doesn't have any dangers other than being a bitch to swap out parts.
neat videos, but it doesn't talk at all about any dangers or why you shouldn't attempt any of these. i dont even know why the exploding battery thing is in there. - cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mine is box fan cooled....take side panel off and point box fan toward computer.
- beers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not to practical, but i read it on the internet so it's gotta be true.
- kosmoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've had my oil-cooled PC for almost a year now, and it still runs just fine.
- fivestarsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4can you remind me why we need a forum to talk about the articles when we can just have conversations about them right UNDER the article?
damn! asd beat me. :-P thats almost the same exact thing too. - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lol, that guy probably would have been poisoned by the chemicals they put on/in the computer parts...
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its gonna smell like fries if they ever try to use those parts outside of that oil case...yum!
- CeeJayDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It was 8 Ghz , but otherwise you're right.

Blocked for banning. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The 5GHz project was so 2003.
Didn't someone do 7GHz the other day using pretty much the same technique? - hellno, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I second TonyBuzzan, adding only that Mark would probably suggest adding and removing the oil multiple times.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Um, did you hit the comment button while in the London Xray Camera story, were forced to login, then was inexplicably directed here where you typed and submitted your story where it doesn't make sense? Happens to me too LOL!
- carbonetc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If only you could find success some other way. Like, having a good idea, or something.
- InvertedDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4im honestly considering making a plexiglass case and oil cooling my pc now, i mean completely silent! and it would probably reduce energy costs because of the lack of fans.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Umm, unless you were currently taking, and had immediately previously taken 6-8 baths in _distilled_ water, I wouldn't exactly stake money on your safety.
- Samsong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Those guys are the coolest people EVER!
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem with overclocking is in order to have stability, you need to increase the voltage. If you do that, more heat is produced. There is also a diminishing returns factor. Many non-overclocked P4 chips actually run in excess of 100W when in use, so all of that heat needs to be removed if you don't want to melt the silicon and plastics. All the liquid nitrogen does is to remove some (well, a lot) of that heat. Because nitrogen is a major component in our atmosphere, it is not dangerous for the components (well, unless you hit it with a hammer I suppose).
Performance wise, I would rather have more cores in my CPU than double the GHz. - bradrock1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um ever hear of electrical breakdown? Or did you not take PHYS 102 E&M? A good example is when huge bolts of lightning strike the earth. Air isn't a good conductor either, but given enough potential difference between the atmosphere and earth and you get lightning. Now introducing a toaster to a tub filled with distilled water may not be enough, but add to it just a little of your body's naturally occurring salts and I would bet that would be the last time you make such a ridiculous claim.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I concur, this was a huge let down. Running a pc in oil is nothing new. I want destruction. This sucked.
- LouCypher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Do you want fries with that PC?
- TheUnashamed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still don't get how this is a safety hazard...
Mineral oil and vegetable oil are dielectrics (just like air), and mineral oil is/was what was used to cool power transformers with thousands of volts flowing through them for a long time.
As for the LN stuff...
If you have the equipment to handle the material, it's very safe. - olego, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Same with the oil video - though that sounds like something from the Unreal soundtrack.
- olego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know what songs are playing in the background video of the 5GHz project?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my brother did this a few years back for pc answers magazine, explaining to my mother why there was a computer sat in the garage soaking in a tub of oil was slightly fecking hilarious

You got that right sunshine. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No more than liquid or gaseos carbon dioxide.
- trigger0219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it'll smell like cooking oil... it'll smell like fries if hes cooked [fired] with the oil before....
- Eth4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to mention all you did was put a digg logo on a simple machines default themed forum.
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm getting the munchies...
- Matri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blocked on principle.
- cankillar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Title CPU was overclocked with liquid nitrogen.
