- silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They say early on that you should make sure to get the correct LCD. They even give an example.

- lpmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They fail to mention the cornerstone of any laptop repair. Unless at some point you end up with extra screws, or find yourself short screws at the end, you cannot insure the repairs was successful. It is only by the sacrifice of screws to the God of Notebook repair can one be truly successful. Breaking a plastic tab, or losing a screw sticker helps, but you risk early repair failure.
- dpollitt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"1) Do your research. Find out what type of LCD you have in your laptop.
Make sure you find the correct display type for what you have."
"I have ordered wrong LCD ...before. ...looked like poop."
Yea your right, they don't warn you at all. They are forgetting that. - ElectroOverlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As someone who has been replacing LCD's and taking laptops apart for the last 12 years....
This scares me that this has been put into the public domain as how to replace a LCD on a laptop....No it should only be a how to on that one model. Many Laptops treat Wi-Fi cables differently, webcams differently, Wimax, Moisture sealing, hinges, microphones, inverters, brackets, frames, screw sizes, screw covers, and other things differently. Some models (god I hate these models) require you to actually take the palm rest off of the bottom of the unit before you can remove the hinges to get access to the bottom LCD screws. Some hinges have caps at the end that break when 90% of even experiences techs take them apart....
Would you accept a How-to on removing a 1999 VW Jetta VR6 themostat as a how to on all car models? - MrSpookyPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I did this about 2 months ago with my wife's laptop with a replacement screen from Dell. Not really as hard as it seems, just tedious. The biggest pain in the ass is cracking the case open around the LCD. I kept thinking I was going to break something if I pried too hard. I removed the entire top assembly first so it could lay flat rather than leaving it attached so I didn't have to worry about any of the cables like they suggest in TFA.
I get to do it again as our 2 year old took a flying leap onto the couch and bounced the laptop onto the floor, cracking the LCD in the process. - blackgt93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No kidding, the procedure is too specific for using one model as a guide. I replaced the panel in a ThinkPad 390X and it was a much different experience than illustrated in the linked guide.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4if you want an 'official' one...from dell at least
http://www.support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6000/en/sm/display0.htm - Ozzy73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also had to do this a couple months ago on a Dell with not much documentation, but it was to replace the hinges which is the same as replacing the screen just that a little bit longer. eBay is a great place to browse for those replacements (we almost bought a whole upper for a laptop including frame, hinges, LCD and wiring harness).
Overall, just take a night to do this well and have confidence as it is easier than you think. - TRENT310, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2[off topic]
Why do a lot of hardware replacement instructions use both of the laptops I also own, a Dell C610 and C840? That's probably because I'm nuts. But then I guess I get personalized replacement instructions. Which is sort of pointless because Dell has great service manuals.
I would be annoyed if the screen broke on my C840, because I don't have any spare 15" 1600x1200 screens anywhere, just a lot of 14.1" 1024x768 ones.
Anyway, the hinges on my C610 used to be nuts, until I dropped it on the floor today in a crowded hallway. now the screen can bend to 245° and it actually holds itself up instead of falling shut or open.
[/off topic] - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did that to my Asus like 3 times already. stupid little plastic toy got stuck between when I close the lid and cracked :(
Open up the LCD and see if I could find some partnumber because I know there are ONLY A few companies out there make the actual LCD's.
So I start looking for LCD's ebay, craiglist, and part warehouses with partnumber i see on there. Mine didn't have any Brand or good partnumbers on it. Took me a lot of time to find it.
After I got tired of it, I started looking for popular Laptops replacemnt displays and hopeing to see some pictures, sure enough the ones in DELL's are same as mine and I picked up a used one with no dead pixels for 75bucks.
:)
Now I just need to replace the CFL in there its going crazy time to time. - Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I replaced a pair of screens on dropped IBM laptop. IBM wanted $800 for each screen. I bought them from a 3rd party for $200 a piece. Took me about 15 minutes to replace each one and have been running flawlessly since.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it is an HP laptop that is fairly new, I highly recommend going to their website and downloading the "Service and Maintenance Guide". That will give you exact directions on how to take the laptop apart, specific to that model.

Next time you find yourself replacing an LCD panel, or any laptop part for that matter, try using a heavy guitar pick to pop the bezel off. I use these all the time where I work and they make for an easier time on almost any sort of plastic case part. - mgranucci, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 - Make sure when you replace the LCD to properly dispose the old LCD at a recycling center.
Like 9.8m/s2 off the 34th floor roof deck? - charlief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@thcobbs
That's true. However, if you do receive a replacement LCD, it's usually the cable that is not inter-operable. If you try to switch cables, it will not work, but the cable that comes with the replacement 9 out of 10 times will work (if you get a cable with the replacement). :) - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry for the comment abuse, but instead of reading this guys blog, try going here where they have step-by-step guides with pictures for specific models:
http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions.shtml - maize, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's why when your browsing EBay after you or your friend drunkenly hit your LCD with something, you pay close attention to what models are compatible with the LCD being sold. Remember kids, if your LCD cannot be 'fized', and unless you have an extra $150+, say heeello to the outdoors!
- Kloeryn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think its funny that the first comment on the site was a long tirade of Digg sux.
You got to the site from Digg...and if it sux so much...why are you still using it? - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1On a side note anyone that is selling a screen compatible for a Toshiba A85 for cheap, let me know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dropped lsd once it worked tho i did not have to replace it
- Phlogiston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I used to work for a company who repaired laptops. The front panel that is around the LCD can be a killer. This is not a good idea to have this out in public, I can't imagine the many ways this can be screwed up.
- firedude328, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0of course purchasing a replacement LCD can cost from 200-400 bucks...and if you buy it from Ebay and screw up....your out that much cash....and nowadays you can find laptops for 600 bucks easily...why not just buy a new laptop instead
- gronkers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0More interested in replacing the backlight on the various lcds that I have. I have one laptop and two of the same model lcd monitors with dead backlights.
Also got a nice princeton that works yet makes a faint high pitched noise - even when off - have to pull the plug on it toget it to stop. - venicerocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"diGG, SUXX!!!" according to the comments section.
- rshu4you, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Keep the old one handy, when you're quick enough at putting it back, great for "waitress knocked off table" "Starbucks employee knocked over laptop". Of course all Diggers are honest enough not to really get someone else to "help" pay for their broken screen.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6What they are forgetting to tell you is all the trouble you can run into if you buy the WRONG LCD panel to replace the busted one. They are NOT inter-operable.
- nerdSnob, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Can I add my own title to this? It should like be... "How NOT to, blah, blah, blah..."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0LCD is very good, hohoho
