- JohnTomato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Observed trend: Joe or Joleen the 'nix guru goes into thread about basic 'nix and rages about how this is all kindergarten stuff. Meanwhile, folks who are not 'nix guru's are learning something.
I'm getting very weary of the "geekier than thou" wankers who need to complain about something. If it is tech, if folks are digging it, take your whiney ass bitch fests elsewhere.
-J.T. - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yup, that's the most well written article on making patch cables I've ever seen. I'm used to seeing it all in bad ascii :)
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well really now people, this is a good link. Do you expect that everyone is born with the knowledge. Agreed that every techie should memorize it, but there are budding techs who would find it useful. Get off yer effin' highhorse.

See, something like this article would fall into the "OLD NEWS" drop down. I come here for tech news and very interesting tech things. If I want to learn how to create a crossover patch cable, I will search google for a diagram for it. This isn't new, it isn't interesting and for the majority of people it is not even relevant. This is like digging an HTML tutorial or a flash animation of "how a hard drive works".
Not everyone is a guru, but god damn it, thre is a place for this kind of thing -- it was called "CALL FOR HELP". If I wanted a tutorial on a bland every day thing, I would search for it myself. I thoght the idea behind digg was news and actual interesting links?
Seriously - how is this any better than digging an article that teaches you bytes and kilobits and so on with a nifty little table chart? I'm sure there are people that could use that and it's a little beneath a "guru" -- but it's again one of those things that if and when you cared and if you didn't already know, you would do a simple google search. - lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is this "How-To: Make a CAT5 cable..."???? This isnt making a CAT5 cable, its how to wire a CAT5 cable. I was expecting how to combine and insulate individual strands of copper wire to truly make a CAT5 cable.... misleading, minus digg.

you dont need the rest unless you have POE."
Sure, you can use any colors with short distances (a few feet) as long as the colors match on both ends. Hell, you will even do fine on a longer cables if you're doing only 10base-T half-duplex. However, you'll get CRC errors (and TCP packet drops) if you want to use the cable for 100base-T / 100Mbps applications. If you're gonna make a cable, might as well make it right so you can use it for 100base-T too when you upgrade your NICs later. - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are missing the "Swear at the cable and link runner when you accidenty punch down the end of the cable with one not in completely." step.
- snorkle256, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well damn, with this around I'm out of a job.
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're not making a CAT5 cable. You're making an ethernet cable. You buy CAT5 cable and this article teaches you how to put the ends on to make it a ethernet / patch cable.
- rankinreb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know what grinds my gears? "This doesn't belong on the front page of Digg." Who the hell do you think you are? Everybody on the Internet? If people didn't digg it, it wouldn't end up on the front page. If you don't think it is worth digging then don't digg it and don't fill up the comments with your digger bashing. If you have something to add that is worth wile, link to more resources, maybe a better article etc. then fine. If not, STFU! It is that simple. It is the diggers that decide what does and doesn't make the front page and not you. I have seen plenty of stories that IMO I thought was front page worthy and never made it. Oh well.
Happy New Year to ALL diggers :-) - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why would make it when you can buy it?"
because you're retarded if you buy cat5 at prices the box stores charge. Couple RJ45 ends and cable from a small store and you can save more than 75% - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is it really worth going through all the hassle of making a CAT5 cable? They're cheap nowadays anyway."
A 300 foot run of Cat5 isn't that cheap, and doesn't generally come with the ends already crimped. - stonry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you noticed that damn near anything you can comment on at some point ends up with the people posting comments just fighting with each other?
- leetcharmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They did it wrong:

- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does one Make a cat5 cable without lots of bare copper and some heavy duty equipment.
Plus Cat 5 is legacy now in the industry it's all Cat-6 and sometimes rarely now Cat-5e
The headline should read.. How to make a RJ-45 network cable or something similar as there are many different ends you can put on cat-5 cable, I use it to make audio cables because I have tons of the stuff. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i got 50 feet for a dollar >_>
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when did people forget to learn how to use a search engine for howtos and tutorials... thats right, they didnt... quit posting and digging retarded howtos and tutorials for stuff thats been around forever and is like first hits in searches..
- muhgcee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every IT worker should click that link and memorize it.
- vagrantradio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should change the name of this site from digg to "I have nothing better to do, so I'll complain about everything."
- TurdFergeson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg... something that can be found in a 1 second google search doesn't deserve to be on the front page.
@vonskippy "how not to honk when blowing your nose" if such a webpage exists, I would surely digg. Nothing pisses me off more than being disturbed by an IT tech blowing his nose loudly while trying to terminate a cat5 cable. - tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hah. Reminds me of my high school days years ago when I was doing basic network administration. We had the color codes written on the blackboard.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OW O GW Bl BlW G BrW Br
Damn, just had a 'wire junkie' flashback. If you dont know the above by heart, you havent made enough cat5 cables and should book mark the site!! - Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty basic knowhow, but it's nice to have in case you don't have that old networking textbook lying around anymore.
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If you dont know how to make a network cable..You need help."
Can you make a decent souffle? Whoa now, no Googling, and drop the cookbook. Can't? Seriously man, you need help. Everyone can make a souffle. - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually I'll digg that too ... i noticed you submitted it =) lets see if we can get it there ha!
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But you liked it. You dugg it.
- MLyzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey doods....not everyone knows this, and it is handy to have around.
- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn ive personally had this one on my own bookmarks list for a while .. wish id thought to submit it ! good link .. definite digger
- fuggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Supadave, reread my post. It does NOT matter what color wires are where. It all just copper. What matters is that wires are in the right places, like I said. The color of the wires (and the standard orders) is there only to make it easier (especially when using blocks and female jacks).
If you dont believe me try it yourself. For a straight thru you need pins 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 6-6. Use whatever colors you want. For crossover go pin 1-3, 2-6, 3-1, and 6-2. That's it.
you dont need the rest unless you have POE.
I'll say it again in case you missed it. COLOR DOESNT MATTER, especially if you're making patch cables. Or do you think the wire is somehow different in the blue wire over the white/orange? - heydroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IT workers don't have time to make cables. We hire out side contractors to pull the cable, and we buy patch cables in bulk. Its not that we can't do the work, its because we spend all day fixing real problems and its not cost effective to make cables anymore.
- stolenpass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why would make it when you can buy it?"
You're probably one of those people that buy the $15 5 foot patch from Best Buy cause it's Geek Squad certified. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol...I did this in CISCO early October.
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My god. It truly is amazing how so many people are bothered by this making the front page. Are all seriously incapable of scanning? The title of the digg is extremely clear as to what you will get when you click the link. Make up your own mind whether it is useful to you, and if not, MTFO. You are not required to read every single article on the front page, and this is one that certainly fits the theme of Digg. These responses leave me thinking that I should launch elitedigg.com.
- lamprey187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Had to make Cat 5 cables in networking fundamentals class over 7 years ago and also crossover cables, fun stuff, but front page news ???? How about I post a story on how to plug an RJ 45 connector into a patch panel. Just kidding, good info for networking basics. Those crimping tools suck.
- frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why make.. its SOO cheap
25 feet for $2.50

I used to work wiring, and they made us wire up patch cables for a couple days, until i explained that paying 3 guys $7/hour to make cables, plus 50 cents for ends wasn't cost effective...
"Who uses cables any more? It's all about the wireless baby."
Until wireless works at 100mbps all the time with no interference or range issues, I'll stick to my home network i wired with scrap from work... - DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who uses cables any more? It's all about the wireless baby.
- chrisirmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why make.. its SOO cheap

Plus $3.85 for shipping...I'll stick to making my own thanks. - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks its like learning to tie a tie :-)
- TurdFergeson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0are you serious JT? Like I said before, anything that can be found on google in a quick search (punch in "how to make a cat5 cable" and this page is the first result) doesn't belong on the digg home page.
I will agree that a lot of the comments are less than professional, albeit some of them quite funny.
I think most people would agree this is pretty basic stuff, granted the page is well written, still not worth digging in my opinion. - oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good Digg! Your timing is impeccable. hehe I had this, and had to print it out in black. Somehow it loses a lot of the content, when shown in black. hehe Having just cleaned and replaced cartridges in my HP 950c, She was ready to print!! So we did. It looks great and I put it IN the Cat 5 Cable Box, where it needs to go, to start with.
Otherwise, it is of no value to print things and then NOT find them when I need them. hehehe
Thank You
Cyborg - supadave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fuggo, "it doesn't really matter what color wires go where". Actually, it does. The reason certain pairs end up on certain pins is because the transmit and receive signals are balanced. The pin arrangement ensures that the transmit and receive pairs end up on their own twisted pairs.
This way, noise is introduced onto the pairs equally, and will be removed when the pair reaches the receiver. - LouieNet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google for "rad5F2E2_crossover.jpg". (Results for English sites are best.) May not be work-safe. ;)
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I got into network cables, I went to google, and at that time. Very little came up. Lots of in depth stuff that was no value to me at the time. I didn't want to learn the heirarchy of the 3rd Reich. I just wanted to make some damn net cables.
Cables ARE much cheaper now, and I try to keep them in stock. HOWEVER< when you get in a mess at night, and there ARE no cables, you are damned glad to have the fixings, and the cable, so that you can make your own, and go HOME...

Not everyone is as smart as you are.. cut us some slack, if you are able to...

I guess there's no reading requirement for the CCNA. That's exactly what they have. http://www.lanshack.com/images/568-B.gif - fuggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you know it doesnt really matter what color wires go where. it just matters that the same wires are in the same position for straight thru, and the right wires are crossed for a crossover cable. if all you ever make are straight thru cables with male ends on both sides, put the wires in any order you want.
following the 'standard' is really only helpful for punching down to block and jacks as they are almost all color coded to eliminate the guess work. - Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone ever notice on almost every digg story there's always someone bitching about how horrible of a story it is?
- abeggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so i just decided to read this digg today because i have been doing cabling for the last 8 years now. very interesting to say the least even though i have the color code burned into my head. some of the comments that I have read blow me away. "its all about the wireless" and "make a 300 ft patch cord" were two that caught my attention.
the wireless
everybody is going wireless but in data centers wireless in not real. how many 1u servers have wifi cards in the? none that i recall. that and if you are needing speed in the enterprise i wouldn't want to be shot down to 54mpbs and crappy coverage. i want 1000 nics and a real connection so that i know that my data is going somewhere and not being leaked by wireless. how secure is wireless.. not at all
300 ft patch cord.
seriously if you are taking an entire run of cat5 or 6 and going 300 ft with and putting ends on each end you are dumb. that is max length, and i would hope that there is at least a patch panel and a wall jack in the mix in some point. the most length you want a major run is 285-290 so that you can allow for the patch cord on each end.
and another comment,
why would you need to know this. how much stuff is actually packaged with a crossover cable? not most of my stuff that i get, and i'm always looking for one or just end up making a new one. then some dumb ass steals that one because they can't make one and then i'm back to making a patch cord. my last 50 attempts have been a perfect cable according to my fluke. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bad example synstar, as there are too many inputs and outputs for making a soufle, its an artitstry...
making a CAT5 cable is not...
its mechanical, theres one way to do it, and thats by putting the wires in thr ight slot...
if you buy a crimper or any tools for making a cat5 cable, they usually come with instructions anyways on how to put the correct wire in the correct pin
