Must have some hard drive on that modem. - Vosem, on 01/12/2009, -2/+104Can I still buy one?

WELCOME! - spyd3rweb, on 01/13/2009, -8/+45What is the crime? Modifying an electronic device is not a crime. Plugging it into a wire that is installed in your home is not a crime. Transmitting and receiving bits from another computer is not a crime, because it is willfully communicating with you
.
The whole "trafficking in unlawful access devices" is bs, because the devices are not unlawful, because no crime is being committed with them. - choopie911, on 01/13/2009, -2/+34good English with precisely worded

- zacbro, on 01/13/2009, -3/+26I modded your mom's modem with my mouth. Then I sniffed her packets and uploaded my seed to her.
- Radan, on 01/13/2009, -2/+25No, it is not great. The problem when stuff like this happens is that the companies that are targeted very often get extremely paranoid and/or power hungry as a result.
Just look at the gaming industry as an example. People start pirating their games, but instead of trying to adapt and actually fix the problem, they get paranoid and start dumping a bunch of DRM and similar on us who are actually paying customers.
Same happened with the TV companies some years ago (people start using hacked cards which made many of the companies install some ludicrous copy protecting which works like crap).
That is why I'm generally against piracy and similar. Not because I directly despise pirates, but because the companies are led by ***** retards. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+22Not only that, they can see you through the built-in camera.
- iofthestorm, on 01/13/2009, -1/+21I'd guess it's a Terms of Service violation or perhaps some sort of theft of service, since you are using a service without paying for it.
- lex0nyc, on 01/13/2009, -3/+21Oh, did I? Then what's this behind your ear?!
- freddyjackson, on 01/13/2009, -4/+21YOU STOLE THE INTERNET
- Abatrour, on 01/13/2009, -3/+20I just talked to some people in the IRC and supposedly this is fake and being taken off wired as we speak.
- adml_shake, on 01/13/2009, -1/+18No no, WE spent billions to put that network in....

- choopie911, on 01/13/2009, -2/+18That's pretty fantastic
- haikuFU, on 01/13/2009, -2/+18Changing your MAC address can be done on all sorts of devices. The reason it's useful on a cable modem hack is that can make it much much harder for the cable company to track you down because you're changing it to a valid MAC of another subscriber on the same segment.
So, I'm assuming what you would do is just sniff the shared medium, either on a L2 level, or by listening for ARP replies to get a valid cable modem MAC from a neighbor, and then make your modem's MAC the same. Since it's shared and not switched, you can put duplicate MAC addy's on the same segment.
I would assume providers that require PPPoE don't have to worry about hacked modems as much. A hacked modem will allow you to modify the speed, but it won't allow you to outright steal services because you'd still need valid PPPoE creds. - sx66gns, on 01/13/2009, -2/+18PUT THE BLUEPRINTS ON THE INTERNET.

- UnaClocker, on 01/13/2009, -0/+13It's one thing to change your computer's Mac address. There are good reasons for doing this. But it's another to change the modem's address. You could program in another modem's mac address and essentially be on the other guy's cable account from the other side of town.
- xero69, on 01/13/2009, -0/+13These modems have been on fleabay forever. For those late to the party read this:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/02/05/cable_mode ...
Search ebay for Sigma or TCNiSO. Buy modem or mod kit. Once you get the modem loaded with the firmware you just call your cable provider and ask for basic cable or digital cable. Once it's hooked up just plug in the modem and you're all set. You don't want to gobble up a ***** ton of bandwidth though, that would make you very easy to find. Would be helpful if you mailed a money order to the seller instead of using something that can be easily traced back to you. A disposable Ebay account would be good too. Even better if you have a VACANT house for sale in your area where you can have it shipped to instead of your real address. You're welcome. - adriantr, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12PUT THE BLUEPRINTS ON THE TUBES
- Jpardue, on 01/13/2009, -1/+13It's a good thing cable ISP's "don't" throttle our connection and control the speed we should be able to download!
- sleeknerve, on 01/13/2009, -1/+13I have one, but i dont think they know.
Hold on theres people at my doo- - spyd3rweb, on 01/13/2009, -3/+14You have to agree to the terms of service and sign a contract for them to apply. So if you are receiving service and you have not signed a contract, there is no obligation for you to pay or abide by any terms of service.
- aywwts4, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10Anyone else keep porn that was only 75% done, it had the little lines in it where it trailed off before you got disconnected. then just figure "thats enough boob for me"
- 1shawn, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10You have other options too. You could replace the broken antenna, either with a stock antenna off ebay or a homebrew solution, or you could mount the wireless router to the ceiling of the basement so the upstairs gets the signal as well as your mini down there. You could even run a short cable down the wall to your mini if you'd rather be plugged right in.
- VyPR, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9I'm sure the prosecution would like to have a word with you.
- theaceoffire, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9Well, he got first post, for what that's worth.
- orville1151, on 01/13/2009, -1/+10Then shouldn't the modem go to jail?
- mitch37, on 01/13/2009, -2/+10INTERNET PUT ON THE BLUEPRINTS
- theaceoffire, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8Course, they are already capping, throttling, censoring and disconnecting us.
So like, if I am going to get ***** either way, might as well download my TV shows a bit faster. - maz2331, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8What, you can't go over to Radio Shaft and get a soldering gun? And exactly what is wrong with running a 50 foot piece of Cat-5? It is not exactly a difficult proposition.
Cheap, lazy, non-tech bastard. - dikky, on 01/13/2009, -4/+12so should the CEOs of gun smithing companies be put in prison for murder?
- yocouchdigga, on 01/13/2009, -2/+9I lol'd
- KboT, on 01/13/2009, -4/+11Free internet!? What a horrible idea!!!
Google is making one of these now /hehe - nostraboris, on 01/13/2009, -3/+10To be devil's advocate: transmitting and receiving those bits through a network that the cable company spent billions to put in the ground, without paying them is the crime.
- psypher, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7And it's the providers own fault for being too stupid and cheap to implement PPPoE. They tried to save a buck and eliminate authentication.
- Professr, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7So plug your own router into their router. It'll fix all your LAN woes.
- Quizboy, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6Oh man i could really use this, I have to use dial-up because my isp ***** up my account and they can't fix it now...DIAL-UP!!!!!!
- yocouchdigga, on 01/13/2009, -1/+7good comment with precisely replied
- psypher, on 01/13/2009, -0/+5Yes they do, you just don't know how to configure them. I've connected routers to every single model AT&T has/uses even the new ones.
