- xOpifex, on 10/23/2007, -0/+13Glad I wasn't alone on that one...
- insomniac8400, on 10/23/2007, -2/+11What good is a phone that won't leave the closet?
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -3/+12did anyone else read that as they were launching a Tom Cruise PDA?
- shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -1/+10its not a vegatable
- SiRwhilms, on 10/23/2007, -0/+8Same here. For a second there, I was really upset.
Then again, how awesome would it be to have a PDA that can jump on Oprah's couch and cure heroin addicts? - CompIsMyRx, on 10/23/2007, -0/+6What would a Tom Cruise PDA look like? I'd expect it to be eternally locked in a small closet.
- Azio, on 10/23/2007, -0/+6Ditto
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -1/+5If Consumers have brains and are not sheeps then it will but dont expect it to be a iPod. Its a Real Smart Phone unlike the iPhone.
- ClarkNoHeart, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Possibly the person who said "Read: HTC launching Tom Cruise PDA in November... Thank GOD I read that wrong!" three posts above you.
- dubloe7, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3im guessing the 5 people above you that said the same thing...
- victimofkratina, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3wouldnt he like that..."im coming xenu!!!!"
- hexydes, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3HTC Touch Cruise, abbreviated, is (or could be, depending on how you look at it) HTC. Anyone else catch the recursive acronym there?
- EtherGnat, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2For starters mobile phones will never be a one size fits all device. Want an actual keyboard? There's a Windows Mobile (or Palm or Symbian) phone for that. Want integrated GPS? Larger? Smaller? Ruggedized? No camera? Ultra long battery life? Flip phone? Choice of carrier? Disruptive apps like SlingPlayer or Skype? 3G? Ability to edit documents? Removable memory cards? Infrared? Stereo bluetooth? Voice control? MMS?
Check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check. Apple will undoubtedly come out with future phones that address some of these options, but they're not a company known for providing a wide selection of hardware. If the iPhone suits your needs, buy one. For many people the iPhone doesn't currently--and likely never will--meet their needs. - dubloe7, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2edge is much faster than dial up in the same way that its better to be punched in the face than the crotch.
the only benefit of edge over dial up is that you dont have to listen to the annoying modem sounds before using it. - Frieked, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2This is it for anyone who can't get to the parent: http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/19/htc-polaris-get ...
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2We'll see....
- SirZRX, on 10/22/2007, -1/+3ewwwwwwwwww 400mhz!!!!
- signal15, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I thought it read the same thing. Maybe it's a good idea from a marketing standpoint. Although, I don't know how they would implement the technical features of it:
1. Knows how to open closet doors
2. Shoots lightning at Oprah
3. Physically jumps on sofas and furniture
4. Knocks up hot women and converts them to scientology
After watching the video where Tarantino describes how Top Gun is really a gay love story, I would suspect the phone would also be into anal. - Kila, on 10/22/2007, -1/+3I have a Sprint HTC Mogul best phone I've ever had never loses signal great marathon battery life.
- bioskope, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2holy ***** this is freaky. i got into this thread just to post the same thing and decided on a hunch to Ctrl+F "Tom" and voila.
- superkendall, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2EDGE is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Much faster than dialup (for example) - people just forget how slow dialup really is since the web is built around higher speed connections now. Also as other people have pointed out at various times, browsing is hard in either EDGE or 3G because there are so many connections being created to get all the content on a page.
For pages without a lot of separate content, or even for Map browsing EDGE works at reasonable speeds. And most of the time people are around WiFi anyway so the whole faster network question becomes moot. - SIRBERUS, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Even worse, with my friend Dysleixa... I have been literally scrolling up and down through comments for about 5 minutes trying to figure out what it everyone meant by they *thought* it said Tom Cruise PDA... I was like "But it does say that..."
=( fail. - dubloe7, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2but you wouldn't be able to remove it from the closet shaped box, so it would be hard to use.
- pak314, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2Speaking of which, TomTom should release a "Cruise" line of GPS receivers.
- Kamujin, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2My HTC Hermes is already well beyond the iPhone in features.
Lucky me that the sheep don't know, else I might have to pay more for it. - vortex22222, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Cthulhu?
- Brainclone, on 10/22/2007, -1/+2Tough to say, but what is really wrong about the iPhone is the network it is on. Edge is just horrible. I see only small apps with little data working on the iphone for now. Sprint uses BB / Windows / Palm phones... anyone doing development on these will have an advantage because of the network, not because of the phone.
I liken this whole phone mess to a video game:
Apple iPhone on the AT&T network is a bit like Bioshock... a great single person experience, nothing can beat it... for single user stuff.
Others on a #G network like sprint... plays more like Halo 3 in multplayer, video etc... pretty good... but damn you just wished Bioshock was multiplayer like Halo 3
Maybe that didnt make sense, but to sum it up... you need a better network, otherwise you will have a limited experience... while others who have a badass network, have to upgrade the software... a much easier thing to do, than upgrading the network. - Wizdum, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I love my Hermes, just loaded a custom ROM with WM6
- hexydes, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/
- canuq, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Mirror: http://mirror.canuq.com/3874700/telecom/a20071022P ...
- hexydes, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1That's the first thing I thought. It is HTC, so it is good hardware, but I'm sure they'll charge a lot for this, so why not bump the processor up? Assuming it is...maybe an X-Scale platform, they can do much better than 400MHz.
- nullcodes, on 10/23/2007, -2/+3How can it beat the iPhone the resolution is merely Quarter VGA?? The iPhone is Half VGA. QVGA makes web browsing inconvenient. Browsing is barely possible without zooming on the iPhone. Even the iPhone has only a 160 ppi display and the human eye can distinguish 1200 ppi from 12 inches, so there is a lot of room for improvement (LCD's with 500 ppi were demostrated even before 2005 - so the tech isnt impossible).
- hexydes, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1That would be awesome. They'd need to find some celebrity to endorse it. My vote goes to Edward James Olmos.
- Icefreez, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Comes preinstalled with Scientology.
- hexydes, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1This seems to be the recurring pattern. My HTC Star Trek (a.k.a. Cingular 3125) has about eight-hours of talk time. It's insane.
- shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -0/+1yeah, "we" did.
by "we" we mean the majority of digg. - dubloe7, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1i snagged the HTC Excalibur (t-mobile dash) recently, and I like it so far. it just seems to crash a lot (thanks windows mobile), but the battery life is epic.
- ProAm500, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1@jlylereeves
I have a Mogul and though I love it, the battery for me is atrocious....where did u find the reg dits at? - EtherGnat, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1I'm going to guess it's the Samsung ARM 400MHz chip. By most accounts it performs slightly better (and uses less battery) than the XScale 520MHz chip in my current phone. A little more horsepower would be nice, but current WM6 phones running on the processor seem to work well.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1the original HTC touch has a 200mhz processor and its runs smooth. Windows Mobile 6 is extremely optimized and isn't the resource whore that WM5 was.
- Aitese, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Hay did any one else read it as...oh...er...never mind
- ProAm500, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1gotta agree with that....the Mogul for one blows the Iphone away...though its not as "cool" features wise its hands above the Iphone..
- EtherGnat, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1"How can it beat the iPhone the resolution is merely Quarter VGA??"
Because a phone consists of more than just a screen. The Touch Cruise may suck, but claiming it couldn't possibly compete because of one feature is silly. - hexydes, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1What is wrong with the iPhone is that it is a cell phone, and thus, tied to one of the US cell service providers. Ultimately, anything with that dead albatross around its neck can only be so good.
What we need is for our current Celcos to die, and for Google to buy some bandwidth and shake some things up. - petard, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1No, you would get it out of the box, but you couldn't get it out of our glove box.
- neodorian, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Awesome. I'm getting one as soon as my contract is up in February, barring any amazing offering from Google.
- halik, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1HTC makes great hardware, but I just can't go back to windows mobile. I've had an HTC apache with sprint and the usability of the package is god-awfully horrid...especially before the sp2 and all the hacks available. It just seemed that MSFT didn't put a single bit of thought about how people will use it (dialog boxes had 5x5 pixel ok boxes that won't go away unless you click them and the UI in general couldn't operate w/o stylus).
Compared to the Treo and Blackberry, Windows Mobile is just bad. I can't really comment on the iphone in this matter, no keyboard and no real connection (full featured browser on circa 1995 connectivity...yay!) makes it useless for anything I'd do with it. - dubloe7, on 10/23/2007, -2/+3lets not.
- amyjones09, on 10/22/2007, -0/+0Yay another great phone we have enough of those on the market
