- JoelJ, on 12/11/2008, -3/+108Awww. The title misled me. I thought it meant the battery would have a charge 3 times longer, not be charged 3 times more.
Regardless, that's nice. And the faster charge time is pretty sweet. - animalmuther76, on 12/12/2008, -3/+56do they explode 3 times bigger?
- Trifold, on 12/12/2008, -3/+39Though technically worded correctly, the title could be considered just SLIGHTLY misleading...
- Rockkybox, on 12/12/2008, -1/+27Yeah same I thought it would last 3 times longer on one charge
- hvsahin, on 12/12/2008, -5/+22Consumer: "I've only had this battery for a year and now it only holds a charge for 20 minutes!"
HP: "Well, have you been taking care of it, storing it, and cycling it properly?"
Consumer: "Say what now?"
HP: "Hmm... would you pay twice as much for a battery that could last 3 times longer?"
Consumer: "Well sure!"
HP: *Wrings hands* "Excellent." - TEEMANOID, on 12/12/2008, -1/+17Would rather have a battery that lasted 3 times longer and took 3 times longer to charge tbh.
But improvements are always good nonetheless. - specialK16, on 12/12/2008, -0/+14As a former HP Notebook support tech I just laughed.
It is very true. - Andrals, on 12/12/2008, -0/+13As a HP laptop owner I feel this stings a bit.
...as it is very true. - MetalLizard, on 12/12/2008, -1/+13Battery R&D has been lacking for the past 50 farking years. It is good they are doing something now, but lots of time has gone by to where we could have had much greater battery technology than we do now.
- earthforce1, on 12/10/2008, -6/+17Keep this up and the electric car might be practical in a few years.
- headband, on 12/12/2008, -0/+9when I hear that a battery last 3 times longer, I think oh hey I can run for 15 hours instead of 5 hours. not that I can charge this 3 times as many times. The title makes you to believe the first but the description explains it.
- strictnein, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7I find this comment intriguing. Please, tell us more about your family arrangements.
- feelmypimphand, on 12/12/2008, -2/+9Wow, think of how this will revolutionize the vibrator market.
- trogdor282, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6You are NOT supposed to cycle Li-Ion batteries!!! If you just leave them on a shelf they will die in 5 years, ANYTHING you do to them (use OR maintenance) just hastens their demise.
- kalkin, on 12/12/2008, -1/+7we seriously need a breakthrough in battery technology. i don't know why they don't even introduce solar panels on surfaces of devices. imagine a constant trickle of energy like that - i'm sure they could develop it so that you would never need to charge them. our calculators from 20 years ago had solar panels for god's sake - surely the technology has moved forward a little since then??
- Rudegar, on 12/12/2008, -1/+5you do know that it's last longer as can be recharged more times right?
if the battery wearing out your mayor issue with el cars? - ParanoydAndroid, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4... Perhaps you should read the article.
and *then* comment on it.
Just a thought. - megamod, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4I was mislead to until I read the description. There's only so much you can explain in the title!
- GrumpyOldMan, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4Interesting fact - the OLPC (One-Laptop-per-Child) XO started out using the Ni-Fexxx battery tech...
So kids in 3rd world countries are getting something MORE cutting edge than us poor slobs who pay our own hard earned $$ to buy tech :(
But then the designers of the XO were NOT constrained by a massive management bureaucracy either... - derrrface, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3We had an electric car ~12 years ago. google "who killed the electric car" (a great documentary) and download / watch it. Big oil killed it!
- Barackalypse, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Buried for somewhat misleading use of the term "three times longer", a better way to have said it it that the battery accepts three times as many charge cycles before its garbage, the way they said it made me all excited that I'd get a battery that powers the notebook for 9 hours.
- craftyguy, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4@earthforce1
Hah! Yea, right,
Considering how we're on track to bailing out the major opponents to electric cars.. - AirRaven, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3A *stunning* extra three minutes of power for an hour in the sun!
Solar Powered laptops are the future, baby. - ccaazz, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2you must be proud
- SwabTheDeck, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Laptop batteries and electric car batteries are generally quite dissimilar from each other, even though the current iterations of both use lithium-ion. Laptops have stringent size and weight restrictions compared to cars. Cars also generally use a cooling system for the battery pack, which can drastically improve performance.
Electric cars are close to the point of practicality. The Tesla Roadster goes 244 miles on a charge and takes 3.5 hours to recharge. Sure, it costs ~$100,000 but that's due to a combination of it being a performance vehicle and the fact that they produce it boutique-style at about 100 units a year. If a "Big 3" manufacturer pumped out a compact sedan EV at 10,000 units a year, they could probably do it for well under $40,000 which is within the reach of many families. - Giga, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2You mean Sony's batteries, which they sold to both Dell and HP?
- dojocasino, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I'm not bragging, I'm just saying that modern laptop batteries perform better than they're saying in the article.
- Baryn, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Buried for misleading title. Though this is good.
- yoxxy, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4OMG REALLY!!!?!!!?!?!?!?!! LEET!
- alexbu, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2HP has first to take care of this mess, the infamous 1 long - 2 short beeps GPU issue:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsuppor ... - Giga, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2"Lasts longer" is pretty vague. Let's say I get 3 hours run time per charge. 3 times longer normally implies that I will get 9 hours run time per charge.
- NeoDreamer, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4you're thinking about Dell's batteries, not HP's.
- czeman, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I've had good luck with Dell. I mainly hate HP because they are too cheap to include Recovery Disks with their systems. I have to wonder what else they go cheap on if they can't afford to include 50 cents worth of CDs with their systems.
- bobsworth, on 12/11/2008, -4/+5I wonder if it will weigh the same...
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Vibrator batteries? Three times longer is asking a lot of this nation's vaginas.
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -2/+3You've had a good experience with Dell? My family gave Dell 4 chances and every one of their computers was a ***** pile that fell apart. To be fair that was 2-3 years ago, maybe they're better now.
- Kila, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1Conspiracy. Why is this new battery Technology coming from a relative new Start up "Boston Power" seemingly out of the blue?
and not a Battery Technology company with Billions in R&D? Energizer or Panasonic or Duracell???
Did some engineers at Energizer suddenly quit with a break through under their belts and form a new company OR Did Boston Power get some new Government Tech on the side ?
my DELL 3 YEar Warranty has me covered in 2 or 3 years I'll just get a new Free Laptop and Battery Rinse Repeat, bought 1 laptop 6 years ago, been doing the Warranty swap to the newest top tier model for 6 years now.
just make sure when you place an order cancel it 2 days later with the Order Modification team, and ask them to give you the 3 year warranty free. They always do. - LoudMusic, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2I disagree. They don't last three times longer - they can be charged three times more, which can be done in a varying amount of time.
- Passitleft, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1I`m in a team that supports around 800 HP laptops. 300 charge cycles is about right, they die soon after. This count is reduced when users (all of them, except the one that use a desktop too), trickle charge constantly on docking stations. The travel packs do seem more robust though.
The cells do need to be conditioned (full charge then condition battery in bios, then full charge again), but this method has never revived a dead one, as far as i can remember. - inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1so you should try high quality batteries for your laptop computer, try here:

Have a great day :) - nismo365, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1Looks like my next laptop is going to be a HP.
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1You know what? That's fair. Made me wonder too. They did include a hard drive recovery partition, but that took like 10GB of my HDD space and somehow got all infected with spyware that ad-aware wont remove.
- Jinstevens, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1What a disappointing article. I was expecting at least something more about how much longer the battery would last. Only the title suggests that it's 3 times longer. Having a battery that charges more quickly is nice, but I'd rather a longer lasting charge. And the lack of technical detail is annoying. It's patented so does that mean you won't give us at least a clue as to how this battery is different than the other ones out on the market. The meat of this article is link to the marketing page where the company is talking about their new battery without much detail. Color me unimpressed.

- dojocasino, on 12/12/2008, -4/+4"Conventional batteries offer roughly 300 charge cycles before becoming useless."
My MacBook battery has had 444 battery loadcycles according to coconutBattery 2.6.3 and I still get several hours' use out of each full charge. - mhmdkhamis, on 02/12/2009, -0/+0… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … ______
