- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -26/+594I feel sorry for anyone that can't fix their own computer. Many problems can be fixed by asking google.
- Barbosa, on 02/24/2008, -7/+552"That screen of blue death."
- mobius20, on 02/24/2008, -23/+378I hate to stick up for Geek Squad, but if someone came to me with a laptop that had a clicking HD and said 'OS Not Found' I'd probably jump to conclusions, too. They even pulled the HD and tried to mount it on another computer, and it still didn't work (some drives just don't like to work with those IDE-USB cables). That all just screams dead HD to me.. I'd like to think that when they went to install the new OS and it couldn't find the HD, they would've figured out the game, but on its own, how often do you think people change random settings in their BIOS and can't remember what they did?
Kinda surprised they weren't as bad as Circuit City. - inactive, on 02/24/2008, -9/+359Its still mind boggling that they charge over $70 just for diagnostics!
- cyborgcommando0, on 02/24/2008, -12/+328Hard to ask Google when your OS cannot be found
- TheOther1, on 02/24/2008, -4/+262I'm surprised one out of the three got it right.
- CheeseburgerBro, on 02/24/2008, -3/+252Can you also service your own car?
I can't. I'm a mechanical idiot, so I try to keep in mind that when people ask me stupid computer questions. A question from me about my car is likely to sound equally as retarded.
If you can fix both your car and your computer, can you perform open-heart surgery?
Everybody's got a knack for something. - ithasacarb, on 02/24/2008, -8/+196All problems can be fixed with google and a second computer.
- LaSepultura, on 02/24/2008, -1/+124Best thing I ever did was make a chart comparing Geek Squad and Firedog's prices to my own. I got tired of people wanting to pay me $20 to fix major problems.
- mobius20, on 02/24/2008, -9/+126"OS Not Found" indicates the BIOS is detecting the HD. "No boot device present" would indicate no detection of a HD.
- nightmare1228, on 02/24/2008, -10/+118Is there another place where this video is found, because I hate windows media player 11 and it resizes my browser!
- swordedge, on 02/24/2008, -9/+113Exactly what I expected. the two big chains are incompetent. Better to use your brother/father/uncle that is the family computer technician. For a problem like this, my family computer technician, me, would have found it in well under an hour and fixed it in about 30 seconds.
- Yarkz, on 02/24/2008, -12/+114And a bootable Linux CD
- ingoldsby, on 02/24/2008, -1/+103It's even more mind boggling that it can cost $150 to install the OS, which is almost entirely an automated process.
- emptyo, on 02/24/2008, -5/+99Ok. I just googled :
"Operating system not found" windows
The FIRST result: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321626
CAUSE
This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
• The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.
• The hard disk is damaged.
• Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).
Note Some third-party programs or disk corruption can damage an MBR.
• An incompatible partition is marked as Active.
• A partition that contains the MBR is no longer active.
I'm not sure it gets any easier than that. And I'm a Mac guy. They are truly idiots. - crombat, on 02/24/2008, -6/+94*passed
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -2/+80or if that doesn't work.. a good visit to someone that knows what the hell they're doing.. always advised to bring a box of hot-pockets, and a 6-pack of their favorite drink.
bam... computer fixed and only charge of what.. 10 bucks? :) - fauxtank, on 02/24/2008, -7/+76***** yeah Microcenter.

- betterth, on 02/24/2008, -2/+53Definitely a bad tech. I worked for a long time at a small computer repair/building shop, and we constantly got people in who were burned by best buy. They'd bring in computers with those snazzy Geek Squad folders that recommended total mobo replacement. We'd find a back stick of ram and send them on their way.
We'd do a free ram check and a free harddrive check, as well as give them five or ten minutes of in-front of them diagnositic for free. After that, we'd have to check it in and let the techs in the back of the store check it out.
Almost every major HDD company offers a bootable hard drive checking tool to determine that problem with a drive. Most require you to run it before you RMA a drive. To not run a program like that, and just listen to it is ***** amateur. It's like a car mechanic listening to your engine and saying "Yup, it's dead. Gotta replace the whole motor". Ya right, chief. - hollywoodphony, on 02/24/2008, -3/+53I disagree. The people at the Apple store are mean and rude. I brought my computer in and they REFUSED to take it in and fixed it. They said they don't do support on HP machines. That's racist.
- satman33, on 02/24/2008, -3/+504 words : 3 year old grandson. That little guy can bring up ***** I've never seen on a computer screen. lol
- se1zure, on 02/24/2008, -3/+49the difference is they can't use trial and error, nor can they just google the issue. It is against their policies. You or I would search google, and try the stuff we found until something works. These technicians would do the same on their home computer most likely, but at work they aren't allowed, as there is a chance they could escalate the issue.
Don't blame the technicians, blame best buy's policies. - vpshockwave, on 02/24/2008, -2/+45Geek squad sucks because best buy is (obviously) more worried about making money than paying professionals to do the right job. I should know. I was on of the couple people at my local best buy that knew what the ***** I was doing. We had retards up there losing backup discs, breaking *****, etc. But, when it came to training, best buy trained you in one thing -- SELLING -- not fixing. It was the forceful selling of overpriced services that made me quit that job.

- JedicodeWarrior, on 02/24/2008, -1/+41Call Geek Squad! $70 to diagnose the problem.
- stevealford, on 02/24/2008, -15/+54The HDD wasn't clicking, they were trying to make a sale on a new one that the customer didn't need. Then they reinstall windows on the new drive, adjust the BIOS to boot the new drive and pretend that the HDD was the problem.
- NJank, on 02/24/2008, -0/+38yeah, but it takes forever to download porn on one of them.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -4/+42Man I HATE the screen of blue death
- FukUrCouch, on 02/24/2008, -6/+43OMG what are those people thinking? $74 for a diagnostic? I mean I've been a tech for a while and i don't rip off people like that. My diagnostics are usually FREE and i only charge for the repair because most are basic problems. The most common problem i have is people with computers that have a bad boot.ini file or NTLDR missing. That is easily fixed by using chkdsk /r in the repair section of the windows xp cd.
- antdude, on 02/24/2008, -1/+38Computer illiterates don't know what Linux is.
- doshindude, on 02/24/2008, -4/+40that just makes me sick, GS charges $180 for sitting there, hitting "Next," "Agree," "Activate," and "Finish" 8 times?????
- BrapAllgood, on 02/24/2008, -5/+41They wanted something like that to help my lady 'set her new laptop up' at Best Buy. I told them "No, I think I can show her how to plug it in and turn it on if she gets confused." He gave me a pricless look (actually it was FREE) and we giggled our way out of the store.
- Lennalf, on 02/24/2008, -1/+36I know a lot about computers, but I just don't care about cars. Different people are curious about different things. It has nothing to do with being "lazy."
- briansearles, on 02/24/2008, -0/+35I'm not surprised that the one that did was Micro Center.
- airwalkery2k, on 02/24/2008, -3/+37I am so glad I didn't take that summer job at Geek Squad. From what I've heard, they get paid to act like that.
It may be fun for me just making up crap, but I'd have too much on my conscious. - TGDuff, on 02/24/2008, -1/+34Blue of screen death?
- Dhalgren, on 02/24/2008, -7/+40Dude, who the ***** goes around messing with the bios? I have been doing computer support for years, and have never come across this problem... When you exit the bios you have to intentionally save your settings, this isn't something you accidentally do. Not only that, but on most modern computers there isn't even a prompt to enter computer setup, it's all replaced with a splash screen. So, most people don't even know how to get into there. Who holds down delete or f10 while their computer is booting?
- xptoast, on 02/24/2008, -0/+33I love the humble factor you have. This is great. It's hard to be humble when all you do is one thing and then you think someone else is stupid because they don't understand. Thank you for that. {: )
- stevealford, on 02/24/2008, -11/+43Not to criticize you, but when the OS can't be found, isn't the BIOS the first place you would check to make sure it's booting properly? Maybe your family needs a new computer technician... ;) j/k, we all overlook simple stuff sometimes.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -5/+37I think most diggers here can diagnose any computer problem, however we think that we speak for the entire world of computer users. Just like I can't diagnose a plumbing issue where any old hack would laugh in my face, or how to cut hair...get over it Digg.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -0/+3270 dollars is free compared to car dealerships
- ...---..., on 02/24/2008, -1/+32I watched them at my local Best Buy tell 5 different people, one after another - that their computer is riddled with spyware and needs to be reformatted. Then they'd offer to backup their data (for a fee - after already charging a "diagnostic" fee) and that they'd have to re-install all of their own software after they were done. You know that 95% of the time they don't even try to fix any kind of software or configuration problem - they just reformat. One person was told that the cost of doing everything was more than the computer and they ended up selling her another computer. I was SOO tempted to butt in and offer to do it for her myself. I suppose they have to make a buck and people that are not very tech savvy pay for their lack of knowledge. Shame though - and a scam.
- ceruleanocte, on 02/24/2008, -4/+35This is why everyone should have a friend who is a computer nerd.
