- HaMMerHeD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Very in-depth, but not too mindbogglingly technical. Nice.
- frgmstr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Thanks, this was our exact goal.
We jumped embargo for some reasons I will not discuss here, but the article will be back up at 1pm CST. - Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"time to retire my 7600gt", and I just bought a 6800GS...
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4there was sarcasm in my post, and I was actually refering to the fact that, while not always the case [H] has a horrible history of spamming articles to digg, flooding the comments with fake 'Go [H]' or 'this is a fantastic article, great site' type comments, and generally gaming digg to attract visitors to their site. This isn't always the case but it happens far to often, look at the comment above you.

Are you implying that there's no spam on [H]? I count 7 ads on the first page of the article, plus Intellitxt ads. - obh21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"We jumped embargo for some reasons I will not discuss here,"
translation: "to ensure we get on digg" - WarMace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FYI, outlook is not too happy about a URL ending in "==". That makes it tough to send to my friends. Edit: NM, the == are optional.
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would you want game companies to delay use of DX10? According to reports and benchmarks, I'll be able to play 20-50% faster with my same hardware configuration all due to DX10.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I'm gonna emerse myself in a Wii".
Say that out loud. - Chandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is the standard release order that Nvidia has been using since the 5 series. They open with the high end card (i.e. 8800), fill in the mid-range (i.e. 8600) and (optionally) the low end stuff (i.e. 8200).
- Metlprocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is everyone shocked about the prices? The latest gfx cards are always $500+ And considering my 6800 will play anything, why upgrade
- Koosebane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, I was going to try and make due with the FSP Group 700w.
The PC Power & Cooling 1KW costs three hundred and fifty bucks more.
Food? Bah. - Massif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why did they start at 8800? That doesn't leave many numbers in the 8000 series...
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Weeee...
I'm thinking of upgrading around March, assuming that nVidia haven't announced anything super better by then, woo brand loyalty. Untill then, my GTX512 should hold me well.
... Unless, of course, Crysis comes out. I may have to buy one straight away then. - WarMace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's Time!
- inotocracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a killer card worth the investment. Although $600 bucks is a lot for a card the lower end GTS sounds like a viable solution for most hardcore gamers-- looks as though its time to retire my 7600gt.
- rubicante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PC Power & Cooling makes a great 1000W power supply (which I use)
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well this maybe the card I will have to buy to play Crysis
One can hope that one does not have to buy Vista to get access to directx 10.
To use the features on this card.
That's one big card with over the top power requirements.
I will have to build a dedicated computer just as a gaming machine.
I don't think anyone makes a 800w Power supply.
Hell I'm out of power connectors.
Hell I would be out of "heat budget" for my current computer.
With a pair of these sli'ed that would kill the power budget for my current system. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2$499 for the GTS, and $659 for the GTX? Excuse the language, but are they ***** high?
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7[H] sure is the most magical website on the web, I used to read other websites, but non-stop spam convinced me otherwise. I know I'm not alone because every time they make it the front page of digg all of the bright minds who worship the [H] sun come out and praise their glory. And truly they are glorious, and am lucky they let my filthy eyes gaze upon there most beautiful content.
Best article written ever about anything btw. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm drooling over that anisotropic filtering...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everything lags in Oblivion~
- josh1413, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are lying.
- AMDnVidiaATi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looking for for next gen. Not very interested in spending the cash to upgrade from my X1900 XTX right now though. I think I'll upgrade 6 months down the road and probably get me an AMD Radeon!
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That'll be a new motherboard too then...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to upgrade my rig, and my aging 6600gt around March as well (for Crysis), but at those prices I might just hang on to my card for even longer. Starting at $499? I won't touch one of these cards until they come down to $300 or less.
- baaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even though I want to retire my 7800, I'm going to wait for the next gen to mature before jumping in
- eddie72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy bejesus that thing is fast. Makes my current SLI setup look slow and that is with just one 8800.
$499.00 for a 8800GTS isn't that bad for a launch price, yeah that isn't exactly cheap though but for that performance sheesh. Time to save up my pennies. - LordofShadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, sure, the 8800GTX looks impressive, but I predict that within 100 years, graphics cards will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive that only the five richest kings of Europe will own them.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All new products are expensive. The 7800GT, for example, launched at $450, and that card wasn't using a new major DirectX version.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"One can hope that one does not have to buy Vista to get access to directx 10.", DirectX10 is definitely going to be Vista only, MS are specially making it Vista only to try to force you to upgrade.
(Direct3d in general is similar - the only reason MS made it was so they could tie games to their OS, there's nothing wrong with OpenGL. Also, be sure not to believe MS's lies that DX10 will be built-in to Vista at low level or anything, that's just ***** to try to justify not releasing it for XP.) - DavidL6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Site needs an editor!
- mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've heard the requirements for being DX10 compliant are through the roof. The cards probably cost almost as much to make as they cost; the GTX has more transistors than one of Intel's new quad core processors, if that tells you anything.
- leoldy1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fast card, very affordable. I had pre-ordered two of them from XFX direct for SLI from www.just4deal.com at a nice price and they are unbelievably fast. I popped them in my QX6700 @ 4.95GHz Kentsfield system and they blow everything away. Lags a bit in Oblivion but thats about it..
- DjSandman87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Time to get rid of my 7900 gt...who wants it?? CHEAP CHEAP!! haha
- dfay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is the first review I've seen that not only covers the 8800GTS, which I think will be the more popular card, but it also has more games tested, such as Flight Simulator X, the only game I have that grinds my current system to pieces and spits it out. Good job [H]!
- Tyrant505, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1question... how does this compare to my 9800pro .. its sometimes hard to really tell the benefits because other cards compared are only a few releases away.. heh
ive been noticing a the vid card market going exponentially crazy as usual.. is this attention worth a new investment?
Video editing and encoding.. some game although atm im not really loving anything.. bfme2 works fine. Oblivion even runs. id rather get a new cpu me thinks.. core 2 from my amd64 3500 - musntSurfatWork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Waiting for AMD/ATI to come up with a competitive product.
I'm gonna emerse myself in a Wii till the next good PC game comes out. I don't know when that will be, no matter. New Mario and Zelda, and Wii sports will bring me some good times ahead. - LostInTheWired, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I understand what you mean. I'm worried about that too. I really don't want to have to spend more for the DirectX 10 stuff right yet. I hope it takes a little bit for gaming companies to adopt so I can have some lag time.
- mrmeander, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2ExtremeTech has an article detailing the architecture: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2054231,00.asp
