- behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Bad comparison...Nvidia would probably charge less if they also had the opportunity to regain their losses by selling wired/wireless controllers, games, wireless adapters, online service fees, faceplates, and other accessories like the console makers do.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Something that costs in the neighborhood of an entire new game console should not be considered midrange!
- quentinp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Heh, reading the article sounds like I should really be looking at the ATI x1900xt instead!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, S3 isn't really dropping the bombs these days.
- cuddleparty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lots. i'm personally waiting for the DX10 cards to start rolling out soonish. you might consider that too. also, if this thing is just underclocked, download the coolbits driver add-on thingy and crank it back up!
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've always considered midrange to be the $150-$200 price point. I just can't justify $300+ for a gaming card. I don't think comparing the cost of a video card to that of a game console is irrational considering that the games are so similar.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes. But if you took the time to comment, you'd have the time to read the article.
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5$300 is very midrange when you consider that the high end is $500+...
Comparing video card prices to console prices isn't fair at all... the cost of a video card doesn't consider the cost of the computer you've got to stick it in. Console dollars are pocket change compared to PC gaming dollars. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The new GeForce 7950 GT offers the same specs and features as the high-end GeForce 7950 GTX, but at a lower clock speed."
Erm, no? The 7950GTX is a dual-GPU card. The 7950GT is a single GPU card. It's closer to the 7900GTX than the 7950GTX (as stated in the article). - WOP1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i remember my brand new 7800gt like it was yesterday. damn i miss my card being the best one on the market. eh thats computers.
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3umm, quite a bit actually. double the pixel pipes (24 vs. 12), more shaders (8 vs. 5), double the ROPs (16 vs. 8).
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With a lower clock speed you can just overclock it right? That means for like 100 bucks more you can get more advanced cooling and your set. But yes i aggree with cuddleparty6 that im waiting for DX10 cards or atleast Black Friday sale.
- jabab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4£100 is the absolute max I spend on graphics cards. That's every few years too. $300 is high end.
- InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed, You would be pretty stupid to buy a card right before DX10 comes out
- Coolestdude1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks as if the heat sink and fan would be another preventative measure to keep those pesky over clockers away...(way to damn small) Damn im out...
And the damn DRM at Hardware level is just gay - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remember the good old days when $200 was considered midrange?
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know what you mean. I just got a second 7800GT off eBay and running SLI now. Quite a nice performance boost.
- Don_Gero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That sentance makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Not only is there no 7950 GTX (it's the 7950 GX2), but for it to offer the same specs and have a lower clock is a contradiction right there. It offers the same features with lower specs....
- beni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Incorrect. There is no 7950GTX, so shame on the OP. There's a 7950GX2, which is a dual GPU card, although each individual core is slower than the 7900GTX, which is the fastest single-GPU card nVidia has out now.
- xpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It may vary brand to brand, but 7950 GTs and all new 7900 range cards should have HDCP. Keep in mind using HDCP will also require a HDCP compliant monitor or TV.
The 7950GT is essentially an underclocked (~100mhz or so) 7900GTX. It offers pretty good bang for the buck if you're not willing to spend more for a 7900 GTX or 7950 GX2. But, like everything else in series 7 GeForce, they're branded as DirectX 9 cards. Thus they'll be out of date when the Geforce 8s and DirectX 10 come along. - lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, the XFX card is a different story. It's the only 7950GT to have passive cooling (no fan - huge heatpipe) at the moment.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or maybe someone is just frugal.
- quentinp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how much better this would be than my 256MB 6800GS?
- martindale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is my thought. Unless it's actually a different GPU, there should be little problem with this.
- 0v3rk1ll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3NVIDIA is awesome. Everything is running perfectly smooth in GNU/Linux, unlike some other company I know...
- TheOneGreatX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't the 7950 support DX10?
- puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think of it more as "upper-middle range", sort of how the upper middle class formed after so many people got so ridiculously rich that they had to redefine upper class.
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1still is for me, you can get 1900gt (or should it be xt) for $200 at newegg. not a bad price i think.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This card is ***** DRM-locked:
"HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) support is becoming increasingly more important, so it's good to note that all 7950 GT cards comes with full HDCP support standard, while it is optional on the 7900 GS."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Bandwidth_Digital_Content_Protection
WHAT THE *****? - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Overall, performance and image quality is better on the X1900XT, but the 7950GT uses a lot less power (that means lower temperatures; the passively cooled XFX 7950GT during load was 10 degrees less than the X1900XT at load), emits less noise, and should overclock better.
- rdcapasso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So how difficult would it be to overclock this card to 7900GTX levels?
- jakeweston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also remember the days when $100,000 was considered high-end...
- Aceanuu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome, sounds nice to me who can't afford the $600 cards, but thinks a plain old 7900 is a little less than I want.
- xpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Honestly, not much. I haven't been a big fan of the 7 series aside from the 7600 GS 512mb cards, which are some of the more efficient yet powerful cards out there.

ch - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4300 dollars, midrange, ugh.
- theraindog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Haven't we been here before?
http://digg.com/hardware/GeForce_7950_GT_debuts_with_passive_cooling - Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Does it have HDCP, im far too lazy to read the article, plus I'm at work!
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5In related news, gamers everywhere wail that $600 for a PS3 is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! :|
