- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Son: "Mom, I need a couple more thousand dollars for a school project I am working on."
Mom: "Sure, dear."
Son: "Dude, we got the funds for the Party Mode!"
Friend: "Awesome!" - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Yep, only at MIT, because everyone else is busy getting drunk.
- SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24they talked about putting a romance mode in...I'm a geek too but somehow I dont think some ladies would be attrached to that.
- endyminion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I think the room was so overwhelmed with exposed wires and wireboxes and buttons and computers that:
A) There is only barely enough room for 2 people to stand stockstill in the center of the room during "party mode"
B) Any female (or cognizent male) would likely be scared of going in, getting stuck in the wiring and never being found until move-out day.
Now, if everything folded away and was hidden in such a way that I had no idea what was coming... THAT would be something I'd go for.
Still though, prototypes are never as sexy as the final product. Mad props to the boys at MiT for having far to much time on their hands and making something pretty damn cool out of it. - aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18just the random red buttons all over the room is awesome not to mention they actually do something.
- Cabal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The greatest part of the article was learning that Steven Seagal has his own energy drink
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12It's genius and all.........up till you realize that you have to clean all that crap out at the end of the year, and the RA will probably bill you up the ass if there's any damage left over from adhesives.
- RaffyG2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14have fun moving out
- rhett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I am really fed up about these comments insinuating that this is only possible because these kids are rich and spoiled. I went to MIT, and lived in the same dorm where projects like this went on all the time, and I can tell you that many students there had barely any disposable income.
How much did this setup cost him? My guess is that it was pretty close to free. How is that possible? People at MIT are always scavenging free tech stuff any way possible, and there are quite a few tricks. Literally, people go through dumpsters that labs use, and you would be amazed at what people throw away. Another great trick is to check the garbage pickup at the end of each month when people move out of apartments.
And where do you get circuit components? You might be surprised to learn that many component manufacturing companies are happy to send anyone free samples if you just ask them.
I'm sick of the bashing, these kids are the most resourcefull people you will ever meet. - VaderHader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11MIT students sleep?
- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yes. And, as a fellow geek, I might add - Ladies may be initially attracted to the romance mode. But, could be instantly turned off when they saw the individuals who set it up...
- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9So thats where the big red button on DL.TV went...
- sawdust34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No ladies? Who wouldn't be attracted to corny romantic music, and incense burner with some distastefully strong aroma, an automatic bed vibrator, dried rose petals falling from the roof, and a bottle of champagne popping out of a cooler James Bond style? I'd say that would be love at first sight for the girl. Eh?
- BBryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8was that stephen hawkings in the party mode video?
- bDreadz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8why with the MIDAS romance mode,+5 lotion of love, and my ninja skills no lady would stand a chance.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I've built stuff like this myself before, and what I find most entertaining about it is the randomness of the parts they used. Just whatever was handy, sort of thing. I never would have thought of using an electric drill to roll blinds up and down, for example. It's too bad the room is too small to make it really cool.
Some good ideas on there. Digg Plus Plus. - opps12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7true as that may be..you could totally fit 20 people in there...dorm parties generally do
- noclips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6its gonna be fun taking down all that cool stuff and throwing it in the trash when its time for them to move out. i never saw the point in decking out a room that you only have for a year (or less).
it is definently cool though, so i have to give it a digg - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It all seems like it was pretty low-budget to me. Seems to be lots of scrap parts and cheap motors and cheap computers or things they already had.
- romper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Reminds me of a dorm from my floor at Iowa State. When the guys moved into the room they had to ask the RA to check the breaker capacity. They were easily over it but ran extension cords through the heating vents to the room next door to borrow more power. =)
- blackmagician, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6LOL . I'm sure all the girls will be running to this guys room. listen to the way he talks, he's partying with himself.
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5retarted? I think that means he was made into a pastry again.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I dunno man. For those of us who are attracted to brains that'd be pretty hot.
"Oh cool room does it do anything else?"
"MIDAS AUTOMATION ROMANCE"
"Oh baby that's so sexy" - gerrard2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5haha i wish my room was like that... freakin' mit kids.. where do they find time to do stuff like this?
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow that room is pimped out. A lot of the electronics is exposed (is that an FPGA or a microcontroller btw?) but put it all into a neat little box, add some controls, and that is one sweet room
- heimtommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i cannot see my dormroom like this...
i'm happy that i have a tv, a laptop and a beansack!; )) - zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4damnit!! why didnt my parents send to me to MIT.. arghhh
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Party effects"? We're talking about dorks from MIT here, right?!
This is clearly a practical joke! These nerds don't have parties, they have LAN gaming tournaments and play 'Who's Who of Quantum Physics'. - SpectreBlofeld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I like the article, but why is DORM ROOM in all caps?
- Rmplstltskn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But did they make an automated towel? You know, a towel that dries you by itself. But then when you're dry, it just keeps drying. Can you imagine what that would feel like? To be really, really dry?
- rhett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have no clue. At MIT in east campus, you can squat in your dorm room till you graduate. You can also modify your room however you like as long as the next person moving in doesn't complain.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not USEFUL. it's there because it's SO FREAKING COOL.
- Systembomber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hah thats give me some ideas ^_^
- ebs16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he did a decent job on his car: http://web.mit.edu/zacka/www/car.html . i like the rear truck horn and the interior alarm.
- fatrhino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If those kids lived in my dorm, and I saw them in their room studying, I wouldn't be able to resist hitting the Party button on them.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2to sum it up in one word....badass. thats how i chose to describe it. yeah they are geeks and maybe even "technophiles" if that word is even a word, but its still pretty badass.
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I once had a bitchin' clubhouse. Video games, fridge, cool lights, the works.
Really got kinda empty when 8th grade rolled around and I discovered girls. Does this remind anyone of the Cosby show episode when Theo moved into an apartment with engineering students? - zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3only at MIT hah. Thats pretty sweet. If I only had the money id do a project like that.
- glownerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@TheAttacks - very true...some friends from my high school went to MIT, they're just about as crazy..
@sawdust - it'd be love at first sight for me :)
wow.... there's really a lot more on this site than the poster lists... he doesn't even mention the PARTY MODE or the touchscreen computer...
they rigged up blacklights, lasers, fog machine, oscilloscope, LED scrolling displays, red and green lasers, trippy visualizations, and a sound-activated strobe... and you turn it all on by hitting a big red button...
make sure to check out the videos - DIGG :)
-gn - cows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A bit of design sense wouldn't go amiss either! They have the skills, they just need some direction.
- AF-Geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because a regular home automation wouldn't be as cool, and you can't use underline, bold or italics in a Digg title.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MC Hawking, to be precise.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mc_hawking - inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gotta love the ability to remotely activate "Party Mode."
"Wait, we can't have a good time until the "Party Mode" is activated. Acck! The party room admins are in class! WHAT SHALL WE DO!!" - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pimp my ride
"Today we're taking a 1988 Buick Cutless, and turning it into an MIT Dorm room." - PhantomZmoove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah really. This is just proof of concept. They did it cause they could. Sure they probably never get laid, but you can't deny that its clever.
- chocolatespoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would feel really lame sitting there being seduced by a bunch of technology. If you've made it as far as to get me into your room......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All you need to do is to have some kids of your own, and all your stuff is automated, including the cat!
- 4denosine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2these kids are nerds until they hit it big, then the trash talking stops and everyone with a huge ***** mouth shuts up. when this kid's making billions there will be such a line of stupid hos in front of his door begging to ***** him it will be mind boggling.
- latour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so what if he's a geek/nerd. he's prob gonna make 3x as much as you guys make once he's graduated.
