No the internet, the World Wide Web... they are not the same. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Every website, in some way, came from that machine.
One day that computer will have the same importance as the first lightbulb and telephone. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@punisherdude
Stop being ignorant. How many times does the Al Gore line have to be debunked before people get over it? He never said he invented anything, that's a Rush Limbaugh line.
http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp - pizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"before or after he invented the potatoe?"
That was Dan Quale - deadkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm just off to randomly pick something from wikipedia to digg.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah there seems to be some kind of bug on the servers, I'm getting an error message when I click the image placeholder in IE. In FF I can't even see the placeholder :|
- redivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Also this is one of the dumbest digg articles ever. Its a damn picture."
If you look underneath the picture, there's some words too. A whole bunch of them, actually. Some people might call it an "article." A short one yes, but information nonetheless. I found it interesting and had never seen it before. And since it's on Wikipedia, there are tons of links on that page to related information, which may also be of interest to someone who doesn't already know everything that you apparently know about the origins of the WWW.
I think the new slogan around here should be: "Digg: They're just links, people. Lighten up." - ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nononononono, read your schoolbooks. the Internet was "Intellegently Designed" by God. Ask Pat Robertson. Didn't Moses wrote the first ToS on two stone tablets?
[/dumb] - Lufy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My god, it's the lost computer
4 8 15 16 23 42 EXECUTE !!!!!! - slack31337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is friggin cool
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find it more amazing that someone found a good use for a NeXt PC.
Glad it ended up in a museum, would be a shame if it had been decommissioned and thrown out. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_server
- webwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know what the book in the bottom right is? From the binding and formatting of the text it looks like a Bible. ??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice Digg! News to us who dont pretend to know everything, thanx for info.
- ep0niks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Oops i just shutdowned the intarweb"

Nice find Digg ++ - reidypeidy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wonder what was hosted on it, and if it's still being used (if thats even possible)?
- Sudar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This reminds me of the saying.
"All great things in the world start from the small"
Excellent find - masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now this gives you a new take on "Click this button to download the entire World Wide Web" - heh

. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+09mm- do you have any idea how many diggs there are of just one pic? Look around more.
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So, Steve Jobs _built_ the Internet?"
No, but twenty years from now everyone will say that he did. - amitrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CLASSIC ++++++++
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"old news!"
Yeah, about 20 years old. The world wide web was invented AGES ago. No digg.
How is it news in the first place? It's just something interesting to look at. Lighten the hell up. - reverb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, that's right. I'd forgotten it was a NeXT cube.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wonder what was hosted on it, and if it's still being used (if thats even possible)?"
It said it's in a Museum, so I'd assume it's not running..

What's humorous about slander? If you made a joke about his personality, getting fat, growing a beard, whatever, yeah, I get it. But the whole "invented the internet" thing was a Rush Limaugh lie that helped Bush become president.
Learn the difference. - eric_n_dfw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don't see a power button... On the back?"
It's on the keyboard, where most PC KB's have their "Home" key. (I think there is also a switch or something on the back of the cube) - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice find. Far from new, but always cool to see. I personally like the pictures of the first Google server set-up.
- curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't download or view the photo, digg effect on wikipedia?! any google cache or another link to picture anyone?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And dosen't that machine look lovley?
It looks much better than other machines from the time. - solvable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must admit, Very interested.
- helf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh yeah, and to the person that asked about the power button.. It's loaded on the keyboard, like a mac. They keyboard has keys for power, volume and screen brightness. the mouse also plugs into the keyboard and the keyboard plugs into the monitor. and hte monitor into the slab or cube with one giant cable. no power cords. :) its very nice.
- LiThiuMElectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow now we know by what the REAL world has been created.
- Abydos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool
- babo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg! I own a cube!

Do you understand the concept of sarcasm, or are we going to have to start giving Digg users an IQ test before they register? - cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the diagram on the keyboard... DeMarco style. Sure brings back the memories.
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually rather enjoyed reading the article that accompanied the photo
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I *still* want a NeXTCube *bad*. Might have to start looking on eBay for one.. At the very least, I could gut the case, put in PC hardware and run some NeXT clone GUI on linux.. I know it used to be called AfterStep, but I don't remember the new name. A NeXT-like WM for OS X would be sweet too.. hmmm (pondering)
oh, and:
before or after he invented the potatoe?
That was Dan Quayle, not Al Gore... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First Web Servers (from Google)

DIGG! - mdmoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lufy wrote: "4 8 15 16 23 42 EXECUTE !!!!!!"
Very well done. I commend you. - punisherdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"But the whole "invented the internet" thing was a Rush Limaugh lie that helped Bush become president."
Wrong. That didn't help at all. Gore didn't need any help in looking dumber than Bush. Just like Dole didn't any help looking dumber than Clinton. It was all a matter of perception. I'd like to see Dole vs Gore. That would be funny. - hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That link takes you to a PPC ISO for Ubuntu Linux, moron."
I think his comment was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Clearly, you didn't get that... - Vladk1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool machine.

"Don't Power It Down"
This reminds me of years and years ago when a company I was working for used Novell for the DB. If the power went down on those POS, it usually meant busting out the backup tapes. We would put lables on the servers warning people not to turn them off. - helf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats pretty cool. Still a lot of NeXT machines in use. I'm typing this on my 33mhz 040 Turbo mono nextstation :P I still use it a lot. Plan on upgrading it some. It's really sad when the GUI on a machine from 1991 is as smooth or smoother than on a newer machine (windows dont repaint when you move stuff over them... :)
- Bender1001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ah nice little machine
