- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+78it hasn't been called the 100 dollar laptop for some time now. though i guess you could call it the 100 euro laptop.
- mediaphile, on 10/10/2007, -14/+71$188 is still a hell of a lot cheaper than $1,088. Keep in mind the iPhone cost $200 more when it came out than just two months later. Manufacturing costs decrease after time, and if $188 is the starting price, I would imagine this laptop could quite easily end up costing less than $100 later on.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+43Well, last time I checked the $100 Laptop was an $176 worth laptop which meant -at the time- around €134. Now it is $188, but guess how much it costs in Euros, yep the same €134. It's your currency that's failing nothing to do with the laptop, costs did not ramped up it was hte dollar's value what was degraded.
- marcusb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30the iPhone cost a lot less than the $600 or even $400 they are charging now. A decrease in manufacturing cost had nothing to do with the price drop on the iPhone.
- KyloOb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Ok, I dont see why people keep bitching. This is an honorable cause, and they are trying their best. Its not like they are being forced to do it and will be making tens of millions. The idea of reducing the price over time is incorrect though, prices get reduced because they have things lying around and they CAN sell them for less. The prices they have now are the lowest they can get them, so no, it wont go down on this particular model.
- m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Was that supposed to be funny? Blocked.
- RealmDown, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18A 100 pound laptop would be more of a luggable.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13These people specialize in developing computer systems. NOT clean water, food, etc. systems.
They're just applying THEIR specialized knowledge to a problem. What's the problem with this? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Except it won't really have less features per se. Its got a dual backlit/e-ink screen, it can be charged with a crank with a 10:1 run:charge time ratio, it has mesh networking built in, and its durable. I would say its very worth its price, and I would love to purchase one if they ever start mass producing them.
- turpialito, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16What a *****.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10You missed the point completely. Its the exchange rate changing that is causing the $ value to change.
- TROGDOR42, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11100 Euros == $US138.93
http://www.google.com/search?q=100+euros+in+usd - nixfu, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12
I guess what most people don't realize is that the $100 mark is the plan for AFTER THEY GET A GOOD RUN going and can reduce the price due to qantities etc.....the inital target was - pcarm92, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10What?
- HerbertScrunge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I guess you could still call it a "laptop", but you would rapidly lose the use of your legs.
- Neem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You will be surprised what those kids can accomplish once the floodgates of knowledge are open and the spark of technology is in their minds.
- alexforcefive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8They should call it the $200 laptop and pocket the difference ;)
- mstoneburner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No thanks. There are about 1000 reasons why depending solely on web-based applications is a stupid idea.
- crypt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I've read it's actually 266 $ for apple to make one, but theyre also making money with the exclusive contracts
- fluxion, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7ahh, you're right i did. in fact, looking at a peak exchange rate of about 1.25 dollars to the Euro last year, the numbers actually work out pretty close with the current 1.38 rate
- fluxion, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8that may be true, but an increase of $12 would most certainly equate to at least a 1 euro increase in the price you're seeing.
In fact, it equates to over 8 euros, according to the current exchange rate.
check your sources on the euro pricing. this is not an accurate way to infer exchange rates. (that's not to say the dollar isnt do so hot, but still) - popothebright, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I strongly STRONGLY suggest everyone try the $100 laptop operating system. You can try a working copy (running under windows) at Moka5.com
It is without question, the most laughably awful operating system I have ever used. It makes Windows 1.0 look positively feature-rich. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5 Has anyone figured out what to do when organized groups of thugs start stealing them en masse from schoolkids?
- isaactwito, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Also they're still trying to bring it down to $100. It's not like they skipped out on their goal, they are just trying to get a good product out rather than simply a product that meets the exact goal. A lot of companies could learn from this. Like how apple is being a ***** gobbler with all their products nowadays.
- Economist35, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6inflation didn't slice the value of the dollar in half
- mishaco, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7you make it sound like they aren't already .
- earthmansurfer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Does something with more features imply that it's better? The things this laptop will do for these kids is endless. Basically, you are looking at unlimited books they can have access to. And not just books that would be supplied by a school. But any book they can get on the internet. This is more than a laptop. Look past the features. Watch those videos on it. The possibilities can't be seen by comparing features.
- Idgit, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8well you could always just call it the £100 laptop then
- aoyamamotoko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3bingobongony, please do a little bit of research before making yourself look like an ass. There actually is such a plan, but it isn't part of the immediate concerns of the foundation.
Heck, there is even a page on the OLPC foundation's wiki about this: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Retail - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3On the other hand, if all those children got laptops early on, maybe they'd grow up able to do basic math, unlike you.
- jajive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5you are an idiot
do you even know what this device is intended for ?
after additional considersation, you are still an idiot - ccheath, on 10/10/2007, -8/+11Wasn't the $100 laptop just a name given to the project by the media because it's not as sensational as One Laptop Per Child (the real name of the project)
plus this probably has more to do with inflation of the US dollar ... back when the project was announced it probably was only $100 ... now with inflation it's up to $188... go figure... - bobcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5They sure are starving to death, but by god they can still browse Myspace.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually, it will be a £388 laptop for the first two months after release.
- my10cent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2they need to get the hardware producers to donate the parts in return for a tax credit, I think it would work, if people was not so damn greedy.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2***** you all if you cant take a joke...albeit a bad one.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I thought a portion of the price went to buying one for a less privileged child....? Somewhat of a "donation". Anyone else remember hearing this?
- joel2600, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8well let's not forget that we're measuring this in US dollars, which really aren't doing that great. pretty soon this will be the $300+ laptop, and it will have nothing to do with anything other than inflation.
they should start calling it the $100 (CAD) laptop - xike, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4That's not counting R&D.
- kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5188 dollars and it still boots, hybernates and meshnet faster than anything outthere.
keep it up olpc, just open it for private buy also not just gov. - livejamie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3wow i was wondering how somebody was going to reference an iphone in the comments, thanks
- dlinear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Actually more like a 100 Pound (£) laptop. That's actually over $200 today, but that can leave you some change to buy a hand crank.
- reddfox321, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4This laptop deal is more than giving them a gadget. Its different than sending people iPods. These are communication tools with almost limitless potential. These could be catalysts for major change the same way newspapers were in the US. Perhaps they can learn sustainability. Its akin to teaching them how to fish instead of feeding them fish.
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, yes. But the price is currently going up after getting a bunch of orders, not down. I think that's what this is about.
- Alconis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Better paying that much for one laptop which can download many textbooks from one source than having to pay that much per textbook.
- AliasHandler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's an attempt to spur creativity among schoolchildren. Having internet access provides access to all sorts of information that could be used to create community clean water supplies, improve farming yields, and improve the standard of living overall. And most of that through wikipedia and related links. It could very well give these people a way to solve their own problems at low-cost, rather than depend on western aid which does very little in the way of education or creating methods that the local people know how to repair or maintain in the future.
- jebivuk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3After the rate cut next Tuesday it will go up to $200 a child. This is more of a problem that the US dollar purchasing power is on a long and permanent slide down. They should drop their "Dollar" peg on the name of the product. We should call is 2 barrels of oil per laptop.
- r3bol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1$188. They've done well IMO. It has some pretty cool features you just can't find on most laptops today.
- ropers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3The OLPC was never about "helping children". It's about market share.
