- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Why not in the US too?! Europe and Japan... always ahead
- sandig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You do however get all the new movies and games ahead of us Europeans. Also, you pay far less for computer parts and other electronic items.
- StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No, most of the computer users out there can't "just install" it. One of the often mentioned stumbling blocks to acceptance of Linux on the desktop/laptop is (lack of) ease of installation or the availability of a preconfiguration from a major vendor. Here's one doing just that.
- nedzalife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9There is less political back-lash and more acceptance of open source software within Europe, so that's why you're probabaly see it there first. As for why the US is slow in getting things like this technology wise? Thank your corporate investors for that. You guys are paying twice as much for highspeed internet that's 1/2 as fast... Until the corporations stop filling their pockets, you aren't going to be seeing any companies invest in products that may or may not take off.
- Ottergoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's cool, but, can it run Windows?
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I think it has to do with bundling, politics, etc. Why is it that the u.s. always gets good cell phones later or never? Same deal with fancy cars.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why not Linux Laptop with AMD too ?
- plumeria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7According to the Enquirer there is doubt whether this will even see the light of day outside France. That's trully a limited market, should the rumors be true.
- Eclipse19, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Remember, the U.S. is the only country using the 850/1900 band standard instead of the 900/1800 band. Not to mention the fact that penetration (subscribers/population) in other countries is a good bit more than in the U.S. If you were a manufacturer, which would you choose?
Thankfully, now that quad-band is becoming more popular, this problem may solve itself soon. That is why you were able to have a phone imported from Europe sremick. - ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah, to us geeks and nerds Dell means crap, but most of the rest of the world think of Dell only as a major computer maker. Therefore, they'll be more interested or willing to look at Linux if its pre-installed by someone they know is a real computer maker, as opposed to what they might view as some weird website. People don't like to move beyond comfort zones, so this is bringing Linux into their standard Dell Boxen comfort zone.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Why is it that the u.s. always gets good cell phones later or never?"
Because we get Verizon, such a warm fuzzy consumer-loving company.
Which is why I went with a different carrier that used GSM phones like the rest of the world and gave me a better plan for less money, then ordered the GSM phone I wanted from a place that imported them from Europe (since the phone I wanted was never released in the USA market). - cyberrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Companies selling Linux and no OS

http://www.powernotebooks.com/ - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is pretty cool. I have been in the market for a laptop and I have already decided that when I buy one I am going to dual boot it with Ubuntu. That's how I have my desktop configured.
- Dark_Ice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually they pay A LOT more for net then we do. At least when compared to Sweden. 100Mbit fiber from the ISP "BBB" (BroadBandCompany more or less) is just $40 a month on the private market. And this is more or less standard right now. The private market is already craving the more and more common 1Gbit speed here. But then again, 100Mbit = more then 1TB of download in 24 hours so we cant say that we actually use the speed we got, we just got it there for the fun of it.
But hey, a Linux Laptop by dell, thats a great way of introducing Linux to people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It doesn't appear to have ade it onto the website yet
http://search.euro.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&subcat=&c=fr&l=fr&cs=&k=dx20 - MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its not about installing Linux... but about not having to pay for Windows if you are not going to use it. And having all the drivers already installed and working right out of the box is a nice bonus.
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11It's still Dell though...
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That made me smile. Wouldn't it be wierd if it didn't?
/grumble, microsoft and their hardware compatibility list....grumble.. - PostedOval, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's not really the point. Why should you have to pay for Windows XP when all you are going to do is put Linux on the hard drive when you get home?
- Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This article doesn't say Dell has stopped offering Windows....it's saying that they are now trying a laptop with Linux in some of their smaller markets. That's oceans apart from saying Dell isn't using Windows anymore.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doesn't Dells Europe branch cover france though?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Elipse: Canada also uses 850/1900. And we've been able to use tri-band GSM phones here for a long time. They were 900/1800/1900. I had a Nokia 6310 I bought in Dubai and kept when I moved back to Canada. Now if only there was a GSM provider besides Rogers here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_frequency_ranges#GSM-850_and_GSM-1900
North American companies also need to get rid of this business of locking phones to providers networks. GSM is great when you can take your phone anywhere and plug in a chip and use it. I was excited when they got it here, but they completely bastardized it compared to Europe and Asia. - echeese, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Not like we couldn't already just install Linux on the damned things anyways.
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have nothing against OEMs, I just dislike Dell and the junk they use to build their computers.
My curiosity is will support fall to Mandriva or to Dell. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why are you surprised? They've been offering the n-series desktops loaded with red hat for some time now, they have a desktop linux forum on site, and they have an "unofficial" community supported forum for installing linux on dell laptops. They're with it man. (link --> http://linux.dell.com/desktops.shtml )
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fedora: Raleigh, NC based distro (US company)
SuSE: Germany based distro though just bought by Novell (US company)
Mandriva: France based and popular with the French gov't. (French company) - ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4People don't install Windows. It comes pre-installed, and if it breaks, they have a hired techie re-install it. Therefore, to them, any OS installation is hard.
- nedzalife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have to agree... now that i think about it, i should just toast Windows on my Compaq 2410 (14" widescreen) and load linux on it. Hell, it does the VM of SuSE 10 w/kde3.5 just fine right now...
- nedzalife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Dell is really serious about releasing hardware with Linux, they should partner with Novell and offer SuSE 10.1 with Novell's tech support instead of needing to worry about having thier own.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find a laptop is a more viable platform to run only Linux (at least in my case) - limited 3d acceleration under any OS means only older games work well, and they generally work fine with wine anyway. Also, performance on laptops with Linux is very good in my experience. Of course, if Linux doesn't support your wi-fi card, it can be a real drag. Also, limited harddrive space can make it frustrating to run to OSs.
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be fair, the n-series doesn't have Red Hat anymore. Dell recieved feedback that it was "the wrong distro" but nobody would tell them what the "right" one was so they started selling them with no OS (well, that FreeDOS thing) so people could install their own. There's no reason to believe Dell wouldn't sell Linux computers though, they've said several times in the past that the only reason they don't already is because of the trouble with choosing and supporting a distribution, and that really is a fair point.
- Menel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That would make a great ultra-compact portable, 12inch or something..
Intel centrino for performance and battery life. Word processing, instant messaging, web browsing. I'd consider it if it was cheap enough. - wolphcry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do it with both my desktop & notebook. I think I boot windows only 3 times a week.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try something else, like kubuntu.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not to mention support from mandriva

- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why Mandriva and not Fedora Core or SuSE? Oh well at least Linux is getting out there. Even if it is Mandriva.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Never trust anything from this newsource.
- stevenhsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How much will the notebook cost if using Linux in a notebook?

Many Linux distributions are just as easy to install as windows and the update manager is far simpler
one example would be Ubuntu, but honestly, there is so much documentation that even if you know jack about computers, you can still install more difficult operating systems, such as Gentoo. Anyone who can read English can follow their (superfluous) documentation.
You make it seem as though Linux installation is impossible for some people, but the only thing stopping people is the lack of inclination, rather than the inability.
Sorry for the essay, but it is just a simple matter of following instructions and possibly doing a little research.
As long as newer users stay away from stuff that is still in development, all should be just fine. - Dark_Ice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As in the government using taxes to support the development, not sure, very possible? But I'm pretty sure Diggnation covered a story about the amounts of billions of $ the US government gave the US ISP's for get fiber to everyone in 2006, but they never did. Might be wrong but I'm sure I heard it when listening to some old Diggnation eps (Think around ep 32) on the buss today. Anyway if the Swedish government uses our tax money for that and the ISP's actually are doing what they're supposed to then I'm happy anyway. Valid critic, thanks for pointing it out, should really look it up.
- nedzalife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yea i know what you mean. while the US might have higher theoretical max speeds (16mbit down), i know here in canada we're actually getting the 7mbit down lines we pay for.
i think its time for me to move to sweden ;) care for a roomie? lol - carmaster787, on 02/21/2008, -0/+0I recently decided to buy myself a laptop. This is the first laptop I have ever purchased, and the first computer I've bought in about five years. I shopped around and tried to get an idea of what options are available, the average price for the feature set I wanted, and (most importantly) which models have successfully seen Linux installed on them.
The topic of Linux on the desktop has captured much media attention lately. While running Linux specifically on a laptop has attracted less attention, everything that applies to Linux on a desktop also applies to laptops. Why Linux, and why Linux on a laptop? Here is some answers:
http://www.ps.uci.edu/~tomba/inspiron/
http://www.linux-laptop.net/hosted/fc5dell600m.htm ...
http://best-online-deals.com/buy-a-cheap-laptop-co ... - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ubuntu is definitely a prime distro for laptops. i've installed it on averatecs, dells, ibms. between you and me, it didn't work too good on toshiba satellites. also, dell's got a tiny fat16 first partition, you have to make sure it's intact if you are dual booting.
i reccomend averatecs, because they are cheap. - jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mandriva has a very slick-looking interface and some nice features, but my experience installing it (multiple times) on my Dell 600m was not good. The deal-killer for me was graphics support, or lack of it for the ATI Radeon 9000 chip on the mobo. Mandriva picked a bad video setting by default, didn't allow me to use my external monitor, and after the second re-boot Mandriva left me stranded at the command line with no GUI at all.
I'm sure Dell and Mandriva worked out a better solution for their OEM, but Linux still has problems with drivers for third party products, and until that situation is resolved, I don't recommend it for laptops. - pr0vidence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you know, until earlier this year I have been WAITING for some company to release a laptop with Linux installed so I don't have to pay the MSFT tax. My Compaq Presario 1800t 650mhz still works great but is really showing it's age these days. However, I refuse to pay for a license to software I don't need. Now that MacBooks are out, any company releasing a laptop with Linux barely phases me. Why buy a machine that can only run Windows and Linux when I can buy one that runs Windows, Linux, AND OS-X. And looks sweeter to boot?
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh, i forgot to mention. avoid intel and broadcom wireless cards. avoid ati video cards. nvidia works well with linux. no-name crap video chips are iffy on compatability
