- BrandonDiggs, on 08/19/2008, -55/+203Someone at Dell realized how ***** windows is.
Ubuntu FTW! - jimmaculate, on 08/19/2008, -4/+81Glad to see Ubuntu getting some broader notice.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -2/+78This would be great for taking notes at lecture.
I thought I was going to get a Macbook for classes this fall. I think I'll hold off now.
At that price point I could just carry this one around for lectures and have a dedicated Windows/Ubuntu laptop in my dorm. All for the same price as 1 overpriced Macbook.
Well played Dell...... - motang, on 08/19/2008, -1/+50Awesome, I had been holding out for Dell's mini notebook and hoping that it would come preinsatlled with Ubuntu on it, so now it's true...so need to order one when it comes out.
- abbathdoom, on 08/19/2008, -13/+61Now all it needs is for someone at Ubuntu to realise how ***** the netbook remix looks with glossy turd brown colours.
- FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -5/+50Or they just realized how free Ubuntu is. Your choice.
- schestowitz, on 08/19/2008, -5/+46Just watch out for the chair, Michael. Microsoft loves competition.
"We should whack them (Dell over Linux dealings), we should make sure they understand our value."
--Paul Flessner, Senior Vice President, Server Applications Unit., Microsoft
"I’m thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. ... they should do a delicate dance"
--Joachim Kempin, Microsoft OEM Chief - rodrigo74, on 08/19/2008, -2/+35The case may me not very remarkable, but the size make up for it. The screenshot looks sexy. I hope they add something like a Micro SD slot, so people can beef up a bit the local storage..16GB goes away really fast these days.
- binaryflow, on 08/19/2008, -1/+31As long as the keyboard is large enough for an adult to comfortably use this will be a strong competitor for the EEE PC. I definitely plan to take a close look. I can see myself spending any Christmas bonus on this little laptop!
- Gryffydd, on 08/19/2008, -0/+30It says it had a media card reader....and why would you want a Micro SD card over say, a SDHC slot like the EEE PC?
- abbathdoom, on 08/19/2008, -3/+28When you go to a bar to pick up chicks do you say to the girls "Dont worry, I have other outfits too". No, you dress to impress.
- tflowholdings, on 08/19/2008, -8/+29Ubuntu > OSX
- mrgodai, on 08/19/2008, -6/+25Lenovo is just came out with brand new 2.64 lbs IdeaPad S10 (Black) 10.2" Notebook from $429 - 15% off Ideapad eCoupon code "USPIDEAPAD15" = $365 with free shipping
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/we ... - FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -2/+20No offense (I like and run Linux and all), but "Ubuntu gaming rig" is kind of an oxymoron.
- jcani, on 08/19/2008, -3/+21I hope Dell doesn't screw this up.
- tomarocco, on 08/19/2008, -4/+20This could be the start of the year of the Linux desktop.
- zombiecarlin, on 08/19/2008, -0/+15Their laptops have improved immensely over the last 3 years. The Latitudes went from being complete rubbish to top notch in a very short space of time. I don't know what changed at Dell but they definetly hired the right people in the right places.
- climbon321, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14My christmas bonus last year was a company sweat shirt...... same as everyone else in the company......
- Elranzer, on 08/20/2008, -1/+14Must be disgruntled Mac users who are used to only picking between Blue or Graphite as a color scheme.
- FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -3/+16You're comparing apple to oranges. Vista capable laptops are in a completely different market than EEE PC's.
- ausfahrt, on 08/19/2008, -1/+14Didn't they start giving people an os option last year on several dell models?
- CalcProgrammer1, on 08/19/2008, -1/+13Yeah, the new theme is ugly. I'm one of the ones who actually liked the old theme (white+orange), but the new theme...horrible, hideous and horrible...just...no!
- stoanhart, on 08/19/2008, -5/+17That's funny. I've installed and used ever Ubuntu iteration sinve 6.04, and the last 2-3 times, all I had to do was check the box next to Nvidia in the restricted driver manager, wait 20 seconds, and reboot. You must be doing something wrong.
- InvisibleInk, on 08/19/2008, -3/+14I'm concerned that the broadband WWAN option will be Windows-only.
I already have Hardy running flawlessly on my Inspiron 1420n. I can tell you, it is way more stable than Vista was on the same box. - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11It's plagued with "Genuine" Windows XP Home :(. I'd rather go with Linux on these.
- thePTS, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10What is your point?
Linux is better as a hardware-scaleable OS, and Microsoft suck at scaling.. we knew that already ;p - bluezombie, on 08/19/2008, -1/+11The Eee is not "venerable", dude. It was born, what, a year or so ago?
Competition is good. Even better would be to scrap the lousy D-Sub for an HDMI. I mean seriously. Tubes are so last century. I also wish they'd nudge it so that you could have two drives. One SSD and one HDD for bulk storage. Or two HDD, or two SSD depending on what floats your boat. - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -2/+12I would love one of those little Dells. Cheaper is good
- ElAmo, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10SDHC slot, and MicroSDHC card with an SDHC adapter.
Best of both worlds. - dcmjzero, on 08/19/2008, -5/+14so what color scheme would be fabulous for you? whatever matches your shoes?
- DyceFreak, on 08/19/2008, -7/+16oh come the hell on... ITS THE DEFAULT...
of course, only self pronounced Ubuntu users that dont actually use Ubuntu would complain about the default because they dont know how to change anything. - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9I really hope that your Christmas bonus is >$299...
- loneBoat, on 08/19/2008, -0/+923 character comment = fail
- EtherGnat, on 08/19/2008, -1/+9Yes. Ubuntu has been an option on several Dell models for some time now. This is nothing new. http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/l ...
- thespiff, on 08/19/2008, -1/+9If nothing else this will help to bring down the price on the Eee low enough that I'll actually buy one!
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8Actually, if you're worried about the drivers, then you need not be. If dell's selling it preloaded with Ubuntu, it's bound to have drivers to make all of it's hardware work good out of the box. Dell can't expect it's users to unpack their brand new shiny mini-notebook and then have to mess with ndiswrapper.
- FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7Damn, that is a pretty good deal. Acer though... ugh.
- Jeffler, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9MicroSDHC?
- fuhrysteve, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Take a look at the right shift key :-/
http://gizmodo.com/photogallery/inspiron910/100321 ... - cannonball, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7At first that seemed like it would bother me, but then i realized that i never use the right shift key anyways.
Right-shift key, we hardly knew ye. - armor, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7Oh yes..
- digitaldivinci, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8I just got back from a failed week long venture with Ubuntu on my Inspiron. It was completely unstable, kept killing my sound and wireless card. Say what you want, but I am a fan of Ubuntu Live CD's for tech support, but I really prefer not to use it as a full OS.
- FredFredrickson, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7What laptop is this that you speak of?
- smacksaw, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7So you're going to dual-boot XP, Vista, Ubuntu and allocate space for a virtual machine...really? Will that be the 4GB, 8GB or 16GB SSD?
You won't be doing any of those things because you don't have enough space. - CalcProgrammer1, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6The "HD" you speak of is really a SSD (solid-state drive). It's smaller because it uses an entirely different technology. I only ever use 20GB for my Linux partition even on big HDD's, so I don't see a huge issue, but if you want to keep a bunch of songs or video on it, a 160+GB HDD (not SSD) should be fairly cheap, as the price per GB on hard disks is much less than on solid state disks.
- TVarmy, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6Eh, maybe they just don't care. Free marketing.
- arjie, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6You're an odd fellow, mizike. The rest of us choose an Operating System that fulfils our needs. From your post, you seem to only choose an Operating System that is popular. Talk about herd mentality.
- frostw, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6A dictionary?
- cesclaveria, on 08/19/2008, -1/+7try using a recent version of ubuntu, it detects your card and asks if you want to install the drivers, you just need to check a box and press ok.
I have been using linux (debian and red hat) for some years now, and have done everything from kernel compiles, installing weird wifi drivers, make the damn ATis work, etc. and I understand why no one would like to do that (uneless you are really into computers) but installing Nvidia drivers on a recent ubuntu distro is something that any trained monkey could do. - bsmang, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6I'm guessing that for $300, you're getting the 4GB option, not 16GB.
