- cptcraptacular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Must be contract negotiation time with Intel again...
Dell: We'll use AMD if you don't cut that price by 20%
Intel: Errr, OK. 15%
Dell: OK - jrepin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is about time they start using AMD processors.
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^^^ no kidding.
- annihillation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0haha, dido ^^^ . ITS ABOUT F'en TIME!!!!
- mrfx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah what he said.... about time!
- Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Zing!
- surge84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Seriously, I drink to this!
- toasterwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I've stopped getting anything useful from Digg...
- americruzano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Miracles do exist. It's nice to see AMD getting the credit they deserve.
- fastfood15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0^^^^^ Yes and No...
I get less Tech storys, and more everything else that i could care less about. I still love digg though. - DonWilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The only AMD processor that I would use is their 64bit chip, and I have absolutely no use for it (nor do 99% of the people on digg, either).
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0If you're digging on a dell get out. No digg
- colincsl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@donwilson:
all of their current processors are 64bit...
not going to happen - thebeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AMD kicks ass with 32 bits tied behind it's back.*
*AMD 64 running Win32 - harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cptcraptacular - nailed it.
Dell has done this move multiple times, and each time they are *just that much closer*, but amazingly it's another couple of years of Intel products. - mono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. When asked about considering use of AMD in the future, Dell gave an noncommittal "it's a distinct possibility" reply. That ain't no story.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging on a Dell Dimension 8300 that only cost me $350.
- Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, Dell talking about using AMD in the future? That's amazing. They say it every 2 years, and their right on schedule again. No Digg, and those who dugg this should be ashamed of themselves for being so gullible.
- moo113, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bah, this rumour has been around forever.
No digg. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on Opteron PowerEdge's... You know you want to do it, Mr. Dell!
- mrkuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dells been doing this forever. Anyone remember the rumor that Dell was trying to license OS X ? I'm sure Microsoft lowered some rates for that.
- ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, mrkuhn, this whole thing is just soo old.
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's just awsome. Go Variety!!
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell: Hey Intel, we're going to go to AMD.
Intel: Geez, how much of a discount you want this time?
Dell: Oh, about 10%, how's that sound?
Intel: Lemme get back to you on that. *click*
*Intel picks up telephone and starts dialing furiously*
Jobs: Hello, this is Jobs, speak to me.
Intel: Oh hey Jobs, how's that company of yours? - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Until they actually commit to doing it, it's speculation and contract fodder. No digg.
- ryker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Gee, how about they give the consumer a choice and offer both Intel AND AMD? Just like it would be nice if they gave the consumer a choice on video cards, both ATI and NVIDIA. But for some reason, that won't happen.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn, beginning of 2007 Apple will offer AMD option for servers.
- shrewd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"The only AMD processor that I would use is their 64bit chip, and I have absolutely no use for it (nor do 99% of the people on digg, either)."
shut up, everyone has a use for a 64bit chip... thats like saying 99% of diggers don't have a use for a bread knife... your a moron... 64bit is where its at, and is damn DAMN useful... - snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Im going to have to agree with shrewed. Amd in general is 5000000 times better than intel. That one dude doesn't know what the hell he is talking about.
- MadceltUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope that this may have some truth to it. Dell have always tried to market themselves as the PC company that allows you to spec up your own PC. Maybe now they are beginning to realise that people want AMD processors.
- GoaGloba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell *MAY* use AMD processors in the future
... yes... and?? - orbitalpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I love AMD. - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell May use AMD? How about now.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Dell says this every six months or so, usually when it's time to renegotiate their purchase contract with Intel. Don't get your hopes up, guys, it's probably just a bluff.
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't effect me either way. I love my Opteron 148, I love how I can clock it to 3.0GHz on air! I love AMD.
- masterremus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate AMD, Intel all the way.
- Splitt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my 3500+:)
- exosyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't see the big deal. More choice is better surely but it seems Intel are wanting to sidestep into the embedded market more and more with the XScale range so maybe they just aren't as interested in the x86 line as much. Possibly a knock on effect of the viiv range?
- soleblazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to see a high end Dell with a couple dual core processors in it. We use AMD at work (Opteron line) and they are much better at things such as mysql and oracle. I can only imagine once a true 64bit windows OS comes out, AMD will have a much better position with Dell and other major PC manufacters.
- tpv2066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will never happen. Dell gets the Intel chips at prices you and I couldnt dream about. The P4 EE dual core costs them in the low 100 range and they charge 300+. AMD cant afford to move chips at that price. The only reason IUntel can is becasue Dell is their largest and most profitable client. Who do you think provides Intel computers? Dell. Want to know how much? Gernerally free.
- hass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Must be contract negotiation time with Intel again..."
Yeah. I've seen this same story numerous times on digg and slashdot. It's not going to happen. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who the hell cares what Dell does? They sell cheap crap. Sticking with Intel is part of that. If or when Intel processors become better than AMD, Dell will sell AMD. The only reason they don't sell VIA C7 exclusively is probably that VIA can't provide the volume.
- m1t0s1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope being the last adopter is the downfall of dell.
- rino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of you CPU bigots are like the Taliban. Just let go and realize that your computer only does magnificent things if you create them!
- srocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.leapsbeyond.com 'nuff said
- dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares what Dell does?
If you want an AMD processor based computer build it yourself or have it built. At least the customer care would be better than with Dell. - kinderstod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell pulls this about every six months to try and squeeze lower prices out of Intel.
In about a week we'll have "Dell decides to stick with Intel" - CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have never heard of anything like this before.
/sarcasm off - Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0man i hope dell doesnt do that, it will be bad for them since amd isnt as good as intel.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea maybe in some alternate dimension where corporations don't run the entire frikkin world.
