- cptcraptacular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Must be contract negotiation time with Intel again...
Dell: We'll use AMD if you don't cut that price by 20%
Intel: Errr, OK. 15%
Dell: OK - thebeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AMD kicks ass with 32 bits tied behind it's back.*
*AMD 64 running Win32 - Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, Dell talking about using AMD in the future? That's amazing. They say it every 2 years, and their right on schedule again. No Digg, and those who dugg this should be ashamed of themselves for being so gullible.
- moo113, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bah, this rumour has been around forever.
No digg. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on Opteron PowerEdge's... You know you want to do it, Mr. Dell!
- exosyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't see the big deal. More choice is better surely but it seems Intel are wanting to sidestep into the embedded market more and more with the XScale range so maybe they just aren't as interested in the x86 line as much. Possibly a knock on effect of the viiv range?
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Theyve been putting them in on customer request for 3 years in edge, and about 2 years in desktops. As well, they will put in Oepn or FRee BSD or RedHat Linux / Server 1 or 2 at your request. All available on their site, too.
- masterremus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate AMD, Intel all the way.
- freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they have been back and forth about this for what, 2 years now
ill believe it when i can get a dell laptop w/ amd-64 x2 w/ 7800gtx, 15.4 screen and 4hr battery life for $2000 or less - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my 3500+:)
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell: Hey Intel, we're going to go to AMD.
Intel: Geez, how much of a discount you want this time?
Dell: Oh, about 10%, how's that sound?
Intel: Lemme get back to you on that. *click*
*Intel picks up telephone and starts dialing furiously*
Jobs: Hello, this is Jobs, speak to me.
Intel: Oh hey Jobs, how's that company of yours? - kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they want the gaming market they have to.
- scrapstyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh really? Or is Dell going to deny it again and wait for consumer demand for AMD processors.
- mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -0/+0You can already get AMD from dell...

do people check these thinngs before posting stories? - L0t3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think it will happen. Every few months Dell says it is considering AMD, and uses it as a bartering chip against Intel. Intel makes the deal sweeter, Dell wins.
Dell drops tons of money into production speed (just built a new, absolutely massive facility)... they're not going to sacrifice output for consumer choice. - mrkuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dells been doing this forever. Anyone remember the rumor that Dell was trying to license OS X ? I'm sure Microsoft lowered some rates for that.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Until they actually commit to doing it, it's speculation and contract fodder. No digg.
- jrepin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is about time they start using AMD processors.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Dell says this every six months or so, usually when it's time to renegotiate their purchase contract with Intel. Don't get your hopes up, guys, it's probably just a bluff.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell May use AMD? How about now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Miracles do exist. It's nice to see AMD getting the credit they deserve.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cptcraptacular - nailed it.
Dell has done this move multiple times, and each time they are *just that much closer*, but amazingly it's another couple of years of Intel products. - ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, mrkuhn, this whole thing is just soo old.
- OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mms://bg1msft-wm9.fplive.net/bg1msft/ces_billgates_keynote_20060104_300.wmv
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging on a Dell Dimension 8300 that only cost me $350.
- mono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. When asked about considering use of AMD in the future, Dell gave an noncommittal "it's a distinct possibility" reply. That ain't no story.
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's just awsome. Go Variety!!
- cebbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am an AMD fan, but the only bad thing about AMD is that it is not an American company while Intel is. Most of Intel's researchers and engineers are employed in the US (Off course, both companies use cheap Asian labor to product their chips).
- dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares what Dell does?
If you want an AMD processor based computer build it yourself or have it built. At least the customer care would be better than with Dell. - srocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.leapsbeyond.com 'nuff said
- rino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of you CPU bigots are like the Taliban. Just let go and realize that your computer only does magnificent things if you create them!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope being the last adopter is the downfall of dell.
- kinderstod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell pulls this about every six months to try and squeeze lower prices out of Intel.
In about a week we'll have "Dell decides to stick with Intel" - CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have never heard of anything like this before.
/sarcasm off - oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I may take a ***** in the next half hour, but you just can't depend on me to come thru, like it was a bet. "May", means speculate, in most business languages used today..
You would have to give me a Dell, and if it wasn't a notebook, I would be trading it for an old used car.(no warranty). hehehe They have some nice monitors, tho'.
cyborg
No story here.... - cebbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought a HP because they offer AMD's and Dell doesn't... Dell is going to lose business if they don't offer good hardware
- Mininday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I have never heard of anything like this before.
/sarcasm off"
Dotto...Didn't they say something like this last year? - llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea maybe in some alternate dimension where corporations don't run the entire frikkin world.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who the hell cares what Dell does? They sell cheap crap. Sticking with Intel is part of that. If or when Intel processors become better than AMD, Dell will sell AMD. The only reason they don't sell VIA C7 exclusively is probably that VIA can't provide the volume.
- hass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Must be contract negotiation time with Intel again..."
Yeah. I've seen this same story numerous times on digg and slashdot. It's not going to happen. - shack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally, they're learning
- penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple might get better and cooler stuff only for them (3 days from now) and dell is pissed and they might as well jump the wagon it wouldn't affect them since they don't come out with software and most dell people don't buy new computers anyway.
- EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell only considers AMD when it's not happy with the pricing they're getting from Intel...
At the same time, I'm sure Dell is none too happy about the Apple-Intel deal. Dell feels Apple is a definite threat. - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to John C. Dvorak, AMD is at least 2 years ahead of Intel in their Dual Core designs.
You can take that with a grain of salt, but....
If they're even 10 minutes ahead of Intel, Dell should be considering them. - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have got 3 8100s with AMDs and Linux RedHAt 9 all installed BY DELL, then shipped to me. FACT.
- jeremiahchoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dell, please use AMD
- tpv2066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will never happen. Dell gets the Intel chips at prices you and I couldnt dream about. The P4 EE dual core costs them in the low 100 range and they charge 300+. AMD cant afford to move chips at that price. The only reason IUntel can is becasue Dell is their largest and most profitable client. Who do you think provides Intel computers? Dell. Want to know how much? Gernerally free.
- soleblazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to see a high end Dell with a couple dual core processors in it. We use AMD at work (Opteron line) and they are much better at things such as mysql and oracle. I can only imagine once a true 64bit windows OS comes out, AMD will have a much better position with Dell and other major PC manufacters.
- dmoffitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DITTO people. it's DITTO. not dodo, dotto or the singer Dido. no digg...
