- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+85WHAT? NO! CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!
- Slashriffs, on 10/12/2007, -13/+45WELL IT SHOULD BE FUN READING ALL THE COMMENTS TO THIS NOW!
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+39i use caps lock a lot when i write sql queries. i would rather tap it once before i type something like "SELECT * FROM" than hold shift the whole time..
type enough queries a day using the shift key and you will feel why i use caps lock.
anyway, this is more of an education thing. teach people not to abuse it by informing them that you will not respond to any more messages they send you in caps, or that you will block them etc etc. - braingilbreath, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37I CAN ALWAYS HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY!
- ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -15/+38Yeah sounds good to me. With the upcoming release of Vista, why dont we replace the caps-lock key with a CNTRL + ALT + DEL key. It will make things much easier. :)
- gbeirne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Can you have a look in your System Preferences for something about over-enthusiastic exclamation mark usage?
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26So some kids abuse it, does that mean we get rid of Cars and Licenses too?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23come on folks, cite bash.org if you're going to steal jokes from them :) http://www.bash.org/?544452
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21There are actually good reasons to use cars and licenses.
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22SQL queries don't need to be in caps
- racazip, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Wow, I'm already tired of all of the caps-lock jokes that will spawn from this digg.
- ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It's true, sql doesn't have to be written in caps, but it's a nice convention and makes queries much easier to understand when they are.
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12LOL, while it is annoying when people type in all caps and things like that, I use the caps lock key for legitimate reasons all the time. I'm in a data-mining job working on a UniData database and all UniQuery (imagine SQL without all the power) must be written in all caps. This would be a supreme pain to do sans a Caps-Lock key. This is just one of MANY things that falls under that umbrella. I also use the caps lock key as my "walk" key while playing CS. :-D
Frankly...I find the idea of getting rid of the caps lock key...slightly appalling. :) - thegreatsam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11How will all the kiddies talk online now?
- theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Okay, I only briefly RTFA, so forgive me if I missed the point. How does the main point (caps locks key thing) relate to
"Hintjens' plan is to build the entire infrastructure for the movement using only freely available tools from Google."
Sounds like someone wanted to tag Google-love unto an otherwise interesting movement? - expunged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@kakos:
No, they don't. Sometimes, though, things are much easier to read when they are uppercase.
Check this out: select * from lighthouse where lighttype='1l'
Again, in caps: SELECT * FROM LIGHTHOUSE WHERE LIGHTTYPE='1L'
Depending on the font you are using, you might never notice that there is a numerical 1 in the lighttype or that what appears to be a lowercase l is, in fact, a lowercase i.
The caps lock key has a purpose. I think the guy behind this is either the ultimate troll or a complete idiot. In either case, it seems to me to be a stupid waste of energy. Just because he doesn't use it doesn't mean other people don't.
Asserting yourself to the point that you restrict how others work because something that is totally subjective annoys you seems ridiculous to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8There are more pointless keys than Caps Lock. Like has anyone ever used scroll lock?
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The first time I saw "Caps lock is cruise control for retards." I just about lost it. I run the IT dept for my company and it's just so bizarre that the vast majority on the floor use caps lock for everything. I've asked them, "Do you write like that?" Of course not. It just doesn't make sense.
The greatest thing is when they ask me why their MS Office spell check isn't working. I go to look, and sure enough, their document is entirely in capital letters. I love telling them that spell check is smart enough to know that nobody would normally write like that, so it assumes it's all acronyms, and it doesn't spell-check acronyms. - becominglumberg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I code in a fairly old language (UniBasic) that requires caps as well. Without a caps key, my job would be a huge PITA.
I could certainly live with it being moved with the rest of the less commonly used keys, like in the Insert-Home-etc block. I don't know what would replace it though... - Barnstormer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I used to use a freeware utility (I think it was called wincapslock) that made the caps lock key work like it does on a standard typewriter: the first time you used the Shift key it took off the caps lock. If you learned to type on an analog typewriter it just seems more natural.
- braingilbreath, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13My Tablet PC comes with one of those
- Canthros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Because, you know, we can't do both at once.
- aclements, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Speaking of cool, check out http://bash.org/?14207
- chrislewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7But first, remove the ScrLk and SysRq key.
And what happened to the sticky caps keyboard? - Maxster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10The key I wouldn't miss on my keyboard is the Num-Lock. I never find myself having to use the numpad for anything else than the numbers. I hate starting to type my passwords and getting an error just to realize the num-lock is off... happens all the time, specially in windows installations
- 72doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8oh man look out, when the CEO of iMatix wants something he gets it!
wait who the hell is Hintjens? - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why get rid of the mildly useful caps-lock key, when there are other far more superfluous keys still lingering about. I've never used scroll-lock (and I'm still rather interested as to what it actually /does/), always leave num-lock on permenantly, never use the pause/break key, and avoid the insert key lest I incur the terrible and annoying wrath of Overtype.
- gdefelice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's standard practice in many places to make capitalize DML keywords. Of course you really shouldn't use * but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt as it was just an example query
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I actually find myself using the Caps lock key every once in a while. The Insert key on the other hand...
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i'll have to re-assign my commander console key for battlefield2. (caps lock is the default)
where is that damn OLED keyboard btw? =) - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6He is going to be killed by a large and angry mob of legal secretaries. They use the caps lock key a lot in preparing legal documents.
- Fenster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think the stigma attached to the caps lock has caused me undue stress and strain on my hands. When typing anything in all caps, I think I have been conditioned against the caps lock and compensate by holding down the shift key with my little finger and shifting my left hand's typing position.
Caps lock doesn't hurt people, people who over use the caps lock hurt people. - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5insert key is godly in vi (*nix). else use 'i' but insert is nice, press it twice and you have repalce instead of insert. can't do away with that one.
- expunged, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah- go ahead and remove the tilde (~).
You'll piss off every *nix user on the planet and immediately make an amazingly large number of websites inaccessible. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Prove it. ;-)
- adamszymczak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL OMG
- johnalex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6On my Macbook, I have disabled the caps lock key in the system preferences, No more accidental caps lock for me!!!!
- DASH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Funny you mention writing in all uppercase letters, when I hand write something I write in all uppercase. It is just easier for most people to read my hand writing. But it is the opposite for typed text. IMHO.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4strangley enough I never use the caps key, I actually find it an annoyance when I accedently bump it, even when using SQL I hold the shift key down, on the other side of the coin however I knew someone who could type fairly fast and never used the shift key, they would go : [caps]letter[caps] : was bizare to watch them
- BenBenMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Caps Lock key is not exactly the problem here. It's the people who toggle it every second letter they write, WhIcH AlTeRnAtEs ThEiR CaPiTaLiSaTiOn LiKe ItS SoMeThInG tHaT iS sUpEr CoOl. Which of course it isn't.
If they want to get rid of an annoying key, how about the Insert key? Accidentally toggling Overtype mode with the Insert key is a lot more annoying than caps lock being on while typing a password. - conedude13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use it mostly for going to directories that have all caps in them so i do not have to hold down the shift key and type.
I really think that there are about a million other things to concentrate the vast majority of your time on instead of complaining about the caps lock key. Especially these days. - mcgarry83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about this... Who cares if people use caps lock? I don't! Write in all caps if you want to, write in all lowers if you want to. Stop whining and starting orgs to get rid of a button that serves a purpose for some. If you don't like people that write in all caps then don't read it! thats all it takes.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'll laugh when you get some kind of muscle disfunction because of that.
- flyinbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2CAD drafters use caps-lock quite a bit
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This isn't half as worthy a movement as BAN COMIC SANS. http://bancomicsans.com/
KIDS, SAY NO TO COMIC SANS - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This whole idea is asinine. The caps lock key is genuinely useful at times, such as typing in a whole string of acronyms (which I do often at work).
This is like lobbying to have spray paint illegalized just because some people use it for vandalism. - AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, comic sans is very anoying, especialy when used by teachers on handouts.
well now , if 200 people say we should ban CAPS LOCK, well then, i guess we better otherwise we're all in for a tretcherous time of NO Capitalisation on ANYTHING, JUST TO OFSET THE OVERUSE OF CAPS LOCK. - jejones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The existence of CAPS LOCK I can deal with; it's the location. As with many other things (the obscenity that is the Intel architecture, MSDOS and thence Windows) we can blame the IBM PC for it; they took typewriters as their model for keyboards, and moved CTRL from where God (or DEC, which at the time was almost the same thing) intended it to be (left of A) off into the corner. Gag, retch, puke.
- Switch625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Comic Sans is, indeed, spawn of the devil.
I know a lot of teachers use Comic Sans and it's not (just) because they have no concept of style. Comic Sans happens to be the only default font in Word which has an "open" letter a (i.e. one that looks like it does in handwriting without the "top bit").
I write software for schools and we unfortunately have to have Comic Sans as our default font. Makes me shudder every time I type!
If anyone knows of a royalty-free simple font with an open-a that isn't Comic Sans, I'd be very grateful to hear of it! - Canthros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Replace Scroll-Lock with Caps Lock. Turn existing Caps Lock into spare Control key, make left-hand Control into Meta. Done.
