- chronichyjinx, on 12/07/2007, -0/+16I pretty much owe this system my life, I wouldn't be this deep into computing if it wasn't for the C64! Happy Birthday C64!
- Minarchian, on 12/07/2007, -1/+16Having a C-64 and an Apple II was the best time I ever had waaay back when.
After reading this I'm going to see if I can find where I put them :)
PS... anyone remember M.U.L.E. ? - Gonz037, on 12/07/2007, -0/+12"Stay awhile.... Stayyy foreverrr"
- Trance750, on 12/07/2007, -1/+13Ah yes, the Commodore 64. Countless hours of my youth were spent in front of it. Good times, indeed.
- hypostatize, on 12/07/2007, -1/+12I used to run a Commodore BBS on mine. The Electric Bonfire (Run on DMBBS software). Hard drives were so expensive that I had like 8 floppy drives daisy chained together. Good times.
- PCjr, on 12/07/2007, -4/+15Vic-20 anyone?
- griz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+10The 128 had a "fast" mode that let you jump to 2Mhz if the screen was blanked. You could just hear the hamsters scrambling about in the case.
- griz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+10Lets not forget MLX and the countless hours keying in programs from the back of Compute's Gazette. Now that was hardcore!
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -2/+12SID was the greatest sound chip ever

Seriously, the C64 started my love of computers! - Zlatty, on 12/07/2007, -1/+10Just a thought,I wonder if you can over clock a commodore 64....
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8My best memory is playing The Bard's Tale II for what seemed like years and never beating the damn game.
I later vindicated that loss on the PC but it still is one of the longest RPG's I've ever played. - SanTe, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8Same here. The C=64 was the gateway drug that led to my IT career.

- crapmatic, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8Ah, Vic-20... the little redheaded stepchild that no one wants to talk about. I enjoyed it for a year or two before I graduated to the C64.

The Bard's Tale
Wasteland
Oh, the memories and countless hours I spent on that thing. - GhostRidr, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7It sure blew the Apple II's sound away. I never could understand why people were buying Apple's then when my C64 ran circles around them--including graphics, which this article says were worse. Not hardly.
- dbug, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6Destroy him, my robots! :)
- GhostRidr, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6You could sorta--you either got an Epyx Fastloader cartridge, or a Warpspeed cartridge. Either one was essential to saving massive amounts of time.

Go DIAF - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6Mail Order Monsters was so badass! You could create your monster and upgrade them and kill other ones. So much fun.

I'm currently listening to Cybernoid.sid - song 1 of 2 - Great SID track. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6I didn't own a disk drive at the time so my friend would bring over his 1541, load up Spy vs. Spy, then bring it back home. I would leave my computer on for days so I could keep playing it. I finally ended up getting a 1571 for Christmas.
- teknobryan, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5I totally agree. The SID sound is now more popular then ever.
- Pimptastic, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4mail order monsters. great now I have to break out the C64 this week and hope my disks aren't demagnitized.
- WRE3, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6How about some Mail Order Monsters or Racing Destrution Set. SYS49152,SYS63738

- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5I used to love racing on the moon with Racing Destruction Set. I wasted countless hours creating scenarios with Adventure Construction Set too!
- chadarizona, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5I loved Jumpman. If anyone remembers "Randomizer" and "Dragonslayer", he is truly a C64 geek
- bitterbug, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6Ah, the memories. You can get a massive set of games, music demos, etc. off BT. Check out Raid on Bungling Bay, by Spore's creator Will Wright.
- Kythas, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5My first computer was a VIC-20. Then I upgraded to the C-128. Skipped the whole C-64, though my dad did his Ph.D. dissertation on his C-64.
My dad still has his C-64 hooked up to his green monochrome monitor and plays Lords of Conquest on occassion. It's the only video game I've ever seen him play. - chsbrgr, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4I remember a prog called The Nibbler which was agonizingly slow ... at least an hour to copy a floppy.
IIRC "*" was the wildcard to load the first program on the disk. ",8" loaded basic progs into memory from drive 1 and ",8,1" loaded non-basic coded progs from drive 1. I thought my secondary drive was ",9" but 20 years later I'm not so sure. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4I still enjoy a good game of M.U.L.E. on my C64 emulator from time to time. But it still doesn't compare to playing with three friends back in the 7th grade. Ah, good memories!

- reuscel, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4I cut my computing teeth on the C64. At 7 years old, nothing was funnier than the result of:

I started with the Vic20, but sold it to get the C64. Remember riding my bike to the local computer store to get used copies of Compute! magazine so I could spend the next few hours typing out the programs listed.
I learned machine language on the C64. It is still sitting in my parents garage with all my floppies and the tape and drive. -
